Big B and Bollywood 'take over' Britain
THE BOMBAY films will stamp their presence in Britain with the opening
of a sprawling 30-screen multiplex Warner Village (WV) complex in
Birmingham's £70 million Star City development on July 7.
A major cinema chain, WV has reserved six screens exclusively for
Indian films.
The decision to screen Bollywood movies, simultaneously on six screens
in Birmingham - with Asians accounting for over 25 per cent of its
population - has been described as a shrewd business move. The long
queues at any theatre showing an Indian movie bespeak of the immense
business potential of the Indian cinema .
The holding of the Indian 'Oscar' at the Millennium Dome's Skyscaper
on June 24, with Amitabh Bachchan, Yukta Mookhey and a host of other
Bombay film stars, would further boost the popularity of the Indian
cinema.
Bachchan topped BBC's online millennium poll for greatest actor ever,
beating Sir Laurence Olivier. He is the most popular star in Britain.
The very fact that he will be present at the Oscar' night at the Dome
has made everyone vie for an invitation to the Big Night with Big B.
He is also expected to be chosen for waxing at Madam Tussaud's wax
museum.
"We have a large overseas audience which is probably at its biggest in
the UK, the USA and South Africa," Bachchan told the Times. "In
Nigeria, a place which doesn't even speak my language, I can walk down
a street and be recognised." No wonder, he will be mobbed if he
strolls anywhere in central London.
Ashok Amritraj, brother of the famous Tennis duo Vijay and Anand, is
also now on the advisory committee which has organised the Dome show.
Having recently produced in Hollywood Battlefield Earth starring John
Travolta, Ashok would be of great help in giving Indian films a
greater push in the Hollywood dominated US.

Aaamir Khan's interview.
You usually do one film a year. But this year saw three of your releases -- Sarfarosh, Mann and 1947: Earth. Are we seeing a change of strategy here?
No. I've been doing two-three films simultaneously, but it so happens that only one film of mine releases per year. But, from this January onwards, I'll actually be working on just one film at a time.
1.While Sarfarosh was a huge success, Mann didn't do too well. Did that disappoint you?
I was not too happy with the end result of Mann. I was disappointed with the way the film turned out. It did not turn out the way I had imagined it.
2.How did you decide to venture into production? Did you always want to produce a film or was it because of Lagaan that you took this decision?
Yes, it was with Lagaan that I decided to go into production. When I read the script of the film, I liked it very much. Then I thought I should produce it myself. Before that I didn't have any plans at all. I think it's a good decision to produce a film and I am finding it a good experience. It's pretty exciting. Hopefully, things should go well and we should be able to execute the film the way we had visualised it. But that is something we'll come to know only when we actually make the film. It is definitely a project that excites me.
3.What does Lagaan mean? What is the film about?
The title means tax. Tax that the farmers had to pay.
The film is set in 1890 in a small village in central India. Basically it's about the problem they are facing at that point of time and how they unite into a group and manage to solve it. It's a film about how the human spirit succeeds in the end.
4.How did you decide upon newcomer Gracy Singh for the film?
We screentested a couple of girls. There were some established actresses who suited the role. But none of them were able to allot us four months at a stretch. We will be shooting the film in one schedule. None of the well-known actresses who suited the role had the dates to spare. So Ashutosh (Gowariker, the director of Lagaan) screentested some girls and finally selected Gracy. He thought she really suited the role and felt that she is a good actress.
5.You both act in and produce Lagaan. Is it difficult juggling between the two?
Yes, it is difficult because I am playing two roles; that of an actor and a producer. What's made it easier with me is the fact that my wife, Reena, is handling the production aspect of the film. She is doing an excellent job and that has taken a lot of pressure off me from the production side. It is really great working with her. It has brought us closer together. Until now, she has never been a part of my work. I'm happy that we're working together to achieve one common goal. I am enjoying it. I'm getting to interact with her in a different manner. So that's really nice.
6.What will you do after Lagaan?
After Lagaan, I will be doing a film for a new director. His name is Farhan. He is Javed Akhtar's son.
7.What is it called?
The film hasn't been titled yet. It's a film about three friends. One of my co-stars is Saif Khan; the other one has not been finalised as yet. Even Preity Zinta is there in the film.

Awards Honor Indian Film Stars
There was no shortage of glitz and glamour Saturday as Bombay's biggest films stars were honored at the International India Film Awards, their cinematic equivalent of the Oscars.
The love story "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" picked up three top prizes including the award for best picture. The film's leading lady, Aishwarya Rai, a former Miss World, won the best actress award while Sanjay Leela Bansai won for best director.
Sanjay Dutt was named best actor for his role as a vendor in the murder tale "Vaastav."
Former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen took home the best supporting actress for her role in "Biwi No. 1" and Anil Kapoor won best supporting actor for the film "Taal."
More than 200 Indian movie stars were among 3,000 guests attending the ceremony at London's Millennium Dome.
Organizers said they hoped to gain international recognition for Bollywood, the nickname given to Bombay, which boasts the world's second largest film industry after Hollywood. The awards show was to be broadcast to 122 countries.
Among the highlights was the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to martial arts legend Jackie Chan.
"It is so exciting to be here," said Chan. "I'm good at action but not so good at speeches. I don't only do action and comedy you know. I'm a good singer and I'm not too expensive."
Actor Sunil Dutt and musician Lata Mangeshkar received standing ovations when they received honors for invaluable contributions to India's cinema.
"I owe this to the people of my country who give great love to me," Dutt said, accepting his award.
The film "East is East" also won an award for outstanding achievement in international cinema. India produces between 600 and 800 films every year.

Hrithik and Abhishek Starred together
Here's the Generation X casting coup, the dream combo you were waiting for. RK Studios have just signed up Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan as the two lead players of their forthcoming film. From what we heard, Randhir Kapoor will be directing the yet-untitled project. The Kapoors brothers, as you know, take turns in directing their home productions - the last two releases (Prem Granth and Aa Ab Laut Chalen) were directed by Rajeev Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor respectively, so this time it's Randhir's turn again.
As for the heroine of the film, it may well be another path breaker. The vine is rife with the talk that pap Randhir will rope in beti Karisma Kapoor for the venture. If that happens, Lolo will set the records straight, by being the first Kapoor girl to to do the honours in an RK film. And with Hrithik and Abhishek to boot, it seems happy days are bound to be back again for the beleagured banner.

Amitabh to be waxed for Tussaud's Museum
Amitabh Bachchan was declared the first and the only star selected
from the Indian cinema for waxing at the famous Madame Tussaud's Wax
Museum, beating Shah Rukh, Madhuri Dixit, Raj Kapoor and Aishawarya
Rai by a huge margin. His wax figure is expected to be ready to take
place among the world famous, past and present, by the end of the
year. He will be sitting for the sculptors immediately. The
announcement during the International Indian Film Awards (IIFA) at
London's Millennium Dome on the Thames was greeted by the 3000-strong
audience comprising all the noted Asians here and a strong contingent
of stars from Bombay film world and Hollywood. History was thus made,
an honour came not only to the all-time great of the Indian cinema but
to India and every Indian. The Tussaud's management said : "The Indian
screen legend will be the first Bollywood star to be honoured by the
legendary celebrity hot spot. He was chosen by thousands of fans who
voted on-line with leading digital Bollywood Channel B4U or at the
Madame Tussaud's site. Susanna Mann of Madame Tussaud's, who presented
a wax version of the IIFA to Bachchan said: "Amitabh Bachchan's
achievements in the Indian film industry more than earn him a place in
Madame Tussaud's and where better to announce his entry than at the
first International Indian Film Awards." Responding to the ovation
greeting the great honour, Bachchan said: "I am deeply moved and feel
deeply humble." And then he switched to Hindi to speak to his fans and
friends back home. Top

Rani:Anything for Govinda
Old flames die hard. Whatever the facade may be, Govinda and Rani Mukherjee still do make a twosome. And if you thought Chi Chi and Rani were old hat, think again. We picked up this juice about the duo, who were hot copy not so long ago, at one of the popular award functions recently. It so happened that Govinda was scheduled to perform live at the show and who else would he prefer as his partner but apni dil ki Rani? But horror of horrors, Rani had sprained an ankle just the day before. So, no amount of cajoling on the part of the show organizers could bring her on stage. Till Govinda intervened. It took Rani less than five seconds to give the nod for a five-minute special appearance on stage when Chi Chi said "please". Of course, she couldn't continue and Twinkle Khanna had to take over the act. Rani returned to her seat among the audience to continue lending moral support to apna Hero No. 1. Govinda emerged flushing with joy. After all, didn't he always have the faith that he could count on Rani, no matter what? Probably that's what you call faith healing!
