Jungle Reivew: Released Last week
Every Ramgopal Varma film is eagerly anticipated. The maker has always attempted diverse themes in the past and his latest flick, JUNGLE, is different from any film seen so far. Reportedly based on the life of Veerappan, the film revolves around four characters:-
Durga Narayan Chaudhary [Sushant Singh] -- The most ruthless killer the law enforcement agencies of the country have ever known. Living deep in the jungle, he rules its dark vastness stretching across the borders of three states. Where beasts feared to tread, Durga made it his home. Where the searing sun could not reach, he scorched in his cold bloodedness. Where the police never managed to catch him, he always killed them. In his savage reign, he killed animals, massacred policemen, slaughtered informers and then one day, he snatched someone's love.
Shiv Raj [Sunil Shetty] -- The daredevil Task Force Commander pitted against an inhuman beast like Durga, he is understandably at a loss. In an unfamiliar jungle of such denseness where you could miss an elephant at ten feet, he is expected to catch a cunning snake like Durga.
Sidhu [Fardeen Khan] -- The charming boy is hopelessly in love with Anu. His only problem till yesterday was whether her father would agree to her marriage, but the problem today is that she has been kidnapped by the dreaded dacoit Durga. The police have thrown up their hands and openly admitted that there is nothing they can do. But knowing that his beloved is somewhere in the jungle, alive and among such savages, can he stay quiet?
Anu [Urmila Matondkar] -- Living in an air-conditioned bungalow and travelling in a luxury car has little prepared her for the trauma of running through thorns and away from predatory animals, not to mention Durga's deadly pack. Caught in the claustrophobic stranglehold of the jungle, under the cover of monstrous trees that do not let even a ray of sunlight, she just lies there, hoping and praying for help she knows may never come.
Unlike his last two films, KAUN? and MAST, Ramgopal Varma is in total command this time. For, in JUNGLE, he strikes the right balance between form and content. A cohesive script and technical finesse have been merged beautifully and that makes JUNGLE an experience to cherish.
Director Ramgopal Varma deserves a pat on his back for choosing an offbeat subject, going in for a star cast that will not make the distributors' heart beat faster and handling the subject with utmost honesty. To state that this is his finest effort, better than SHIVA [his first Hindi film], RANGEELA and SATYA, would be absolutely right.
The cinematography and background music compliment the efforts of Ramgopal Varma. The camerawork is top class and can easily be compared to the best in Hollywood and the sound [background music] is first-rate. Sandeep Chowta's music too is not a hindrance to the goings-on. Each song comes at the right situation and is very likeable.
Every character in JUNGLE has a well-defined role, which is why every performance stands out at the end of the day. Ideally, this should have been Fardeen Khan's first release. The actor emotes well, delivers his lines with confidence and looks nice. Even in the high-charged dramatic scenes, not once does he go overboard. Urmila Matondkar is at ease in a role that gives her ample scope to showcase her talent. Her scenes with Durga can easily be singled out, for they have been shot with brilliance.
Sunil Shetty is in form yet again. The actor seems to be taking giant strides with every film and this is among his finest performances. Sushant lends the right shades to the character of Durga. His eyes convey what is there in his mind and at times, his heart. Kashmira Shah springs a pleasant surprise. She is excellent. Makrand Deshpande is in form yet again. Manmeer Singh and Rajpal Yadav, from Durga's pack, stand out with good performances.
On the whole, JUNGLE has all it takes to emerge a winner. At a time when we crave for something different, within commercial parameters, JUNGLE strikes the right balance between form (technique) and content (script). A must see!

Shahrukh's son Aryaan is a big fan of Hrithik
It hurts when friends switch loyalties. It hurts when his fans turn staunch supporters of Hrithik. Yes, we are talking about none other than Shahrukh Khan.
Shahrukh is trying his level best to retain his eroding base. But what happens when his son Aryaan switches his loyalty from his papa to Hrithik. Does it hurt ? Yes, Aryaan dances up in joy when he sees the Coca Cola ad and hears the Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai song. While Gauri says that Shahrukh does not stop his son from seeing Hrithik, he does not enthuse him either.
So one up on Hrithik's fan count while one down on Shahrukh's end, right ?

Ghai scouts for British Asian actors
Veteran Bollywood film director Subhash Ghai is seeking British Asian actors to join the cast of his forthcoming $4 million blockbuster 'Yaadein' (memories), due to be filmed in part in Britain.
"It's a family and social love story," Ghai told IANS at the 'mahurat,' or ceremonial launch, of 'Yaadein' at a glittering London reception last night. "When the family go to India they have memories of Britain; when they are in Britain they remember India. Of course it's a musical as well."
Jackie Shroff is the lead actor in the film, which also stars Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan.
At the launch party last night local British business celebrities were co-opted into participating in the mahurat. Billionaire businessman Sri Hinduja cracked a coconut on the banks of the Thames and steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal wielded a clapper board for the symbolic first take.
Mini cab driver Pravin Purohit, who doubles as a priest at the local Finchley Central Hindu temple, invoked a sanskrit blessing asking for good luck, prosperity and happiness for all those involved in Yaadein.
To the delight of the watching crowd Jackie Shroff, dressed in a dark overcoat, uttered the opening lines of the film as the cameras rolled. "Yaadein hain, baatein hai" (there are memories, there are events), before vanishing into the back of a waiting limousine.

Yukta Mookhey willing to give acting a try
London: Like her predecessors, Miss World Yukta Mookhey would like to give Bollywood a try if she got the "right offers" and a "nice script."
"I have been getting offers from Hindi film producers and directors. If it is a nice script I will accept after stepping down as Miss World in about four and a half months," said Mookhey who has already completed her graduation and is not keen on pursuing academics further.
She, however, ruled out joining the film industry at present, saying she is happy to honour her contract as Miss World.
The 21-year-old beauty queen is also interested in a career in media and entertainment. Asked if she would enter politics if given the opportunity, she said, "no, not even in the next seven lives. I can't play games with people."
Her message to fellow Indians is "believe in yourself and you will achieve the goal."

Another Gandhi theme to don the silver screen
From being roped in to give the much needed facelift to a dwindling party image to being portrayed as the potential heir apparent of a political legacy, the charismatic Priyanka Gandhi is now the theme of a Bollywood flick.
Nothing much has been revealed about Bollywood's project on Priyanka, but according to tinsel town's grapevine, the movie is proposed to be a bilingual (English-Hindi).
Pertinently titled 'Good Night, Princess', Priyanka's role will be depicted by the long tall model-turned-actress Pooja Batra and is the brainchild of Attlee Brar, a one time actor who acted in a Dev Anand's box-office disaster, Hum Naujawan.
With a grand theme, 'Good Night, Princess' is proposed to have a grand launch at the Canada International Film Festival early next year

Bollywood turns its gaze overseas
India's prolific film industry, which for decades has been content to feed its vast domestic market, is increasingly turning its gaze overseas where the Indian diaspora promises a rich new source of profit.
According to Supran Sen of the private Film Federation of India (FFI), India exported films worth 4.5 billion rupees (104 million dollars) in the year to March 2000, an increase of almost 30 percent over the previous year.
The FFI is the apex body of all domestic film industry organisations. Sen said the overseas demand for Indian films started growing around five years ago. "Before that the export figures were quite dismal, averaging about 500 million rupees a year."
The growing importance of the overseas market was reflected in the decision of the Indian film industry -- based in Mumbai, or 'Bollywood' -- to choose London's Millennium Dome as the venue for its annual film awards last month.
It was the first time the Indian equivalent of the Oscars had been held outside the country. Sen said 95 percent of India's film exports were Hindi-language movies. India produces around 800 films a year, of which 200 are in Hindi and the rest in regional languages like Tamil.
London is the second biggest market outside India, and Hindi movies have for the first time begun breaking into the top-20 list of box-office draws in Britain.
Two major cinema groups in Britain are preparing to open new complexes with screens dedicated to Bollywood films, known for their melodramatic plots, song and dance routines and wet sari-clad female stars.
Living movie legend Amitabh Bachchan was recently chosen as the first Indian film star to have a look-a-like exhibited in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum.
Other overseas markets include the United States, Middle East, Fiji, Japan, Singapore, Hongkong and Malaysia.
Several Indian entertainment software companies are basing their expansion plans on the potential growth in demand from outide India.
The Sahara group recently announced plans to set up a two-billion rupee film and television infrastructure facility in Bombay to cater to the domestic and overseas market. "We will have the capacity to produce 5,000 hours of entertainment software. We do not need all of it and will sell it overseas as well as locally," Sahara chairman Subrata Roy said.
Sunil Lulla, whose company Rishima International is the largest exporter of Indian films, said the overseas demand for Hindi-language movies had boomed in recent years.
Indians are passionate about films. Some 20 million Indians are estimated to watch movies daily in 13,000 movie theatres across the country.

Three major releases on Oct 27
October 27 will witness the fight of the top three movies. Yash Chopra's 'Mohabbatein' will be in a duel with Aamir Khan's home production 'Lagaan' and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 'Mission Kashmir'. If 'Mission Kashmir' bombs, Hrithik's position will be more affected than Shahrukh's. Hrithik's one hit put down Shahrukh and so the reverse is expected if 'Mission Kashmir' fails in it's mission. Yash Chopra who has the highest sucess at the box office so far could prop up the sagging career of Shahrukh and write off Hrithik temporarily. The sword now hangs over Hrithik. Let's see who gets killed in the box office wars. Top
