Movie Review : Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega
Impressive star cast. Competent technical team. A much-awaited project… So, does HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA live up to the big expectations? Yes! All the way!

Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment's HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA is a love triangle. Raj (Salman Khan) arrives in Mumbai from Goa to fulfil his dream of becoming a top singer. After a long struggle, he realises that his long-awaited dream has nothing but a dark end.

His life takes a new turn when he saves Pooja (Rani Mukherji) from a deadly accident. Pooja goes into a coma, but her rich and loving family mistakes Raj to be her husband, Romi.

And then Raj falls in love with Jhanvi (Preity Zinta), who happens to be Pooja's best friend. He is in a dilemma and is forced to make a choice between the two women in his life!

Loosely based on the South film CHANDRALEKHA, HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA is a winner from the word 'go'. The introduction of Salman Khan in the 'Ek Garam Chai Ki Pyali Ho' number, interspersed with the titles, makes the mood upbeat and is an indicator of things to follow.

HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA has a very basic plot, but the way the screenplay has been developed and handled, is where the film scores. HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA has zing, gloss and of course, tremendous youth appeal, which is the mainstay of this enterprise.

HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA is a triumph for director Raj Kanwar and writer Rumi Jafry. The writer-director team have used stars as characters and interwoven them in the story in such a way that the outcome is thoroughly enjoyable. The film has comedy that clicks instantly with the masses (Shakti Kapoor), tender moments between the three principal characters and romance in plenty.

Add to it a hit musical score (Anu Malik), brilliant choreography (Farah Khan) and stylish camerawork (W.B. Rao) and the outcome is paisa-vasool. But where the film actually scores are the dramatic moments the relationships between the characters. The relationship Rani and Preity share, plus the friendship between Salman and Neeraj Vora and Paresh Rawal's relationship with his boss and his family members, have been handled with extreme care.

The unmistakable stamp of director Raj Kanwar is visible throughout. The interval point when Shah Rukh Khan enters the hospital, claiming to be Rani's husband, shocks the viewer completely. The handling of this scene and prior to it, the sindoor sequence, keeps the viewer on tenterhooks.

The film does have its share of weaknesses too, but not that affect in changing the opinion of the viewer. The sole drawback, if one can call it, is that the film is slightly lengthy towards the second half and can do with trimming for a better impact.

Anu Malik's music is top class. The music composer is in command and belts out some winning compositions, which include the title track, 'Aisa Pehli Baar Hua Hain' and 'Ek Garam Chai Ki Pyali Ho', which is undoubtedly one of the best numbers of this year! Sameer's lyrics are wonderful and prove his versatility in the title track.

Anu's compositions get a boost with Farah Khan's expert choreography and W.B. Rao's first-rate cinematography. The film has a rich look and the colour combinations (art director: Sharmistha Roy) make the film a rich visual experience. The titles (Binny Paddha) are amongst the best witnessed so far.

Performance-wise, HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA clearly belongs to Salman Khan. He takes a giant leap in emotional moments, handling the most difficult scenes with aplomb. In the light moments as well as the romantic ones, he is in total command, not going overboard one bit. There is no denying the fact that Salman will win adulation in this film, more for his performance than his star appeal. His overall look and performance deserves the highest marks.

It is truly difficult to pinpoint who amongst the two heroines is better in the acting department. Both Rani and Preity get equal footage, are at their glamorous best and get great scenes to perform. And it goes without saying that both pass with flying colours!

Paresh Rawal is superb yet again. Shakti Kapoor's comedy sends you in peels of laughter. He plays to the gallery and emerges triumphant. Kamini Kaushal is adorable as Rani's grand-ma. Rajiv Varma is adequate. Neeraj Vora is very likeable. Razzak Khan is nice as well.

On the whole, HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA has all it takes to emerge a winner great stars, great entertainment and great making. Combined together, the film is sure to prove a hit, making the distributors laugh all the way to the bank.

Love triangles set to swamp theatres
Mumbai - It's the season of melodramas in Hindi films. Starting next Friday, the industry will unleash a torrent of triangular love stories in theatres across the nation.

The first of these triangular tales to hit the screen would be 'Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega' on August 4. The film, directed by hit-maker Raj Kanwar, features Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta as the two girls in love with the same man, Salman Khan. Adapted from the Tamil hit 'Chandralekha', the film also has shades of Hollywood hit 'While You Were Sleeping'.

Director Raj Kanwar describes the film as a very emotional love triangle filled with songs and dances. A highlight of 'Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega' is the girl power that the two women exude in their songs and dances. While its fairly common to have two men wooing one woman in Hindi films, the two woman-one-man triangle is still rare. Trade pundits expect the strong saleable star cast and the upbeat music by Anu Malik to pull in the crowds.

The following week, on August 12, the movie industry will unleash two more powerful love-triangles. Harry Baweja's 'Deewane' features Ajay Devgan as the strong and silent lover trapped between two passionate and demanding women, played by Urmila Matondkar and Mahima Chowdhary. Incidentally, Mahima is becoming quite accomplished at playing the second woman in love triangles.

In Dharmesh Darshan's eagerly awaited Akshay Kumar-Sunil Shetty-Shilpa Shetty starrer 'Dhadkan', Mahima plays a fourth angle. Her role was reportedly written into the script as an afterthought so that the hero who doesn't get the girl doesn't feel left out in the end.

In fact, a lot of love-triangles in recent times have roped in last-minute guest appearances by top-notch actresses for the triangular tale to finally acquire a quadrangular element. In the recent past, David Dhawan's comedy 'Chal Mere Bhai' saw Sanjay Dutt losing Karisma Kapoor to little brother Salman Khan but he got Twinkle Khanna in the end.

In 'Dillagi', Bobby Deol gets Preity Zinta at the end after he loses Urmila to elder brother Sunny Deol. In 'Mela', Aamir Khan walks away with Twinkle but real-life brother Faizal Khan gets Aishwarya Rai as consolation.

While triangles stretched into quadrangles flourish in the movie market, 'Mela' director Dharmesh Darshan feels 'Dhadkan', which opens alongside the other love triangle 'Deewane' on August 11, is a very special film. The director says it's the film closest to his heart.

His committed cast seems to agree. Akshay Kumar, who plays Shilpa Shetty's husband in 'Dhadkan', is said to have given the finest performance of his career. According to those who have seen the preview, Akshay's performance is worthy of an award. Sunil Shetty, in an unusual negative role, also excels while Shilpa Shetty has been presented in a style more associated with Yash Chopra.

Interestingly, another love-triangle 'Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai' opens during the week after 'Deewane' and 'Dhadkan'. This one features Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Sonali Bendre as the three protagonists. Sonali's role was initially offered to triangular specialist Mahima.

All these August releases seem bonded by their format, theme, treatment and melodious music. Trade experts in Mumbai feel that action films are out of business in Mumbai, at least for a while. The intensely romantic love triangles lined up for August could begin a new trend in commercial Hindi cinema.

Fists do not fly furiously in 'Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega', 'Deewane', 'Dhadkan' and 'Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai'. These films could spell the death knell for the action genre. But action king Akshay Kumar disagrees. "Action films can never go out of style," he says.

The 'Dhadkan' hero is currently in Toronto shooting his next Khiladi thriller 'Khiladi 420' in which he has performed some heart-in-the-mouth stunts that will leave audiences' spellbound.

Fiza follows new casting trend
Take a star actor and a star actress, contrary to the expected lead romantic pair, pair them as brother and sister and enjoy the difference.

Mansoor Khan tried it and wasn't totally unsuccessful. The difference of seeing Shah Rukh and Aishwarya as siblings did not really jolt the audience out of its wits. They were gradually accepting the new trend.

Knowing Bollywood, it suffers from a tendency to pick up a trend and continue to make films on it till the audience is fed up. So known film critic Khalid Mohamed joined the bandwagon and has come up with Fiza starring Karishma Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan as sister and brother.

Those who have managed sneaked previews of the film say that Khalid should make more films. Hrithik has given a superb performance and the music by A R Rehman and Anu Malik is dramatic. Even Saroj Khan who could not think beyond the pelvic jhatkas has choreographed a mind-blowing taandav nritya.

Supported by the eminent presence of Jaya Bhaduri as Hrithik's grandmother, and stellar performances from the entire cast, the film has no reason to fade away. And if it does well, we know what's in store for us, more stars as brothers and sisters on reel.

Mamta Kulkarni's burqa angers Muslims
The recent appearance of actress Mamta Kulkarni in court wearing a burqa has raised a protest from certain sections of the Muslim community in Mumbai.

According to North Mumbai District Muslim League president Gulam Rasul Khan, the actress has misused the burqa during her appearance in the city's Esplanade Court on Friday. Mamta Kulkarni was in court in connection with a hearing of the obscenity case filed against her for posing on the cover of Stardust magazine.

'She has put a black mark on herself after allowing the publication of obscene photographs of herself in an issue of Stardust magazine in 1993. Why does she want a burqa to protect herself from the public now?' Mr Khan questioned.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Regional Muslim, in a statement, also warned the actress that if she appeared in the Esplanade Court in a burqa again on August 24 for the next hearing, she would be burnt alive by the party workers of the Muslim League.

And though, according to Raza Academy secretary general Mohammad Saeed Noori, a burqa can be worn by anyone, even a non-Muslim, he said that it was only so long as it did not insult the garment and was used only for protection and not to cause any mischief.

Maulana Mansoor Ali Khan, general secretary of the All-India Sunni Jamaat Ulema, has no qualms over Mamta Kulkarni choosing to wear the burqa. Though a burqa is a distinctive garment for Muslims, there is no objection to non-Muslims wearing it either, he said.

When questioned about the actress' photographs in Stardust, he said, 'If a person was on the galat raasta (wrong path) before, but is now coming on the right way, hum to unka istaqbal karenge (we should support them),' he said. If the Muslim League is protesting the same, then it is wrong on its part, he added.

Bollywood hot in Freetown
It's well known that Hindi films are popular with audiences the world over. Despite the language barrier, Hindi films and their songs have managed to strike a chord with people in diverse cultures from Moscow to Cairo these are seen and hummed. Recently, while on a tour of civil war-ravaged Sierra Leone, The Pioneer's scribe-on-spot was amazed to find that in spite of the grave political instability in that country, the people there have the time to watch Hindi films. This ought to be a tribute to Bollywood's escapist formula films. However, what took our special even more by surprise was the Bollywood hero whom the people of Sierra Leone most admire. No, it is not the angry man Amitabh Bachchan for a change, or even honchos like Salman Khan or Hrithtik Roshan. The Sierra Leonese would risk their lives and limbs only to watch Punjab da puttar, Dharmendra. That should please the Indian heart no end.

Juhi Chawla planning to release a music album
Oh, oh, not again. Has Juhi Chawla been smiling and giggling again? Never judge a book by its cover, and never judge Juhi by her chirpiness alone. Behind those sunny smiles lies a wicked sense of humour, and she is regularly giving those one liners. She admits that she's going through a lean phase and giggles aloud: "If my movies don't work, no problem. I'll cut a music album instead." But seriously, she's actually decided to learn classical music, and since she was always fond of singing but couldn't learn it because of her acting career, now was as good a time a time as any. Incidentally, she's also been watching plays. Mahatma vs Gandhi in particular, because Dreamz Unlimited is planning to make their next film based on that play.

We have seen action heroes doing romantic roles. But what happens when they decide to play negative role ? Yes, it's Sunil Shetty we are talking about

In Dharmesh Darshan's Dhadkan, which co-stars Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty and Mahima, Sunil plays a character with grey shades. After all, he loses his love Shilpa to Akshay Kumar and decides to burn the whole world!!

Sunil is dead sure that he is all set to walk away with the best negative performer award this year. Even his Dhadkan tells him so, but what does your Dhadkan say ?

Why you should watch Hrithik's 4th Film?
Ok, so you watched and ogled at Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Naa... Pyar Hai. And you’re waiting to do that again with his two new flicks Fiza and Mission Kashmir.

Right? We suggest you don’t bother to watch his next two films. No, sweeties, we’ve got nothing against the hunk. We’re just trying to tell you what a certain jyotishi is going around telling everybody in Mumbai — that Hrithik’s fourth film is all set to create history. Apparently, the jyotishiji has done his homework and claims that after painstaking efforts of studying the hunk’s kundali, he has come to the conclusion that Hrit’s stars will once shine when his fourth film hits theatre

While KNPH was his first, Fiza and Mission Kashmir will be his second and third films, Subhash Ghai’s Yaadein will be his fourth.

Given the fact that Yaadein is by none other than the showman himself, and Hrithik is pitted opposite Kareena, and of course his very cooperative stars, celestial ones that is, Yaadein has the potential to become another superhit. So, does that mean his ‘stars’ were also responsible for KNPH’s success???

11th August all set to witness the battle of action heroes
11th August will witness a never-before-seen battle in bollywood. Three of the top action stars are into a new avtaar and will play romantic leads in their forthcoming movies. Yes, we are talking about none other than Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Ajay Devgan. While the former two are all set to clash with each other in Dhadkan, Ajay Devgan and Urmila play each other's Deewane.

While Akshay and Sunil have proved they can do comedy, they are all set to prove that they too can run around the trees. Ajay Devgan who has toned down his action hero image in some of his recent movies will be experimenting with this role for the first time.

Let's await the d-day and to see who hits the Jackpot ?
