- Dada Saheb Phalke award to Rishikesh Mukherjee
MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 5: Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the director who won critical and commercial acclaim for his simple, yet sensitive films such as Anuradha, Anand, Satyakam and Anari, has been chosen for India's highest film award, the Dadasaheb Phalke award for 1999.

Popularly called Hrishida, the 78-year-old director continued making successful light comedies and directed a deglamourised Amitabh Bachchan through the heat and dust of the action craze of the 70s. (In fact, Bachchan still swears by him. Some of his best work emerged under Mukherjee's baton, he says.)

The director will be presented with the annual award for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema by President KR Narayan on September 18.

The award, first given to Devika Rani in 1969, comprises a Swarna Kamal, Rs two lakh and a shawl. Producer-director BR Chopra was given the Phalke award last year. Other notable awardees include Raj Kapoor, Satyajit Ray, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Dilip Kumar.

Born in Calcutta in 1922, Mukherjee started out as a teacher and a freelance artist at All India Radio. He follwed renowned film maker Bimal Roy to Bombay to join New Theatres Studio in 1945 where he worked initially as a laboratory assistant and then as a film editor. His first full editing assignment was the Bengali film Tathapi.

Hrishida did the production work of Bimal Roy Productions' maiden film, Do Bigha Zameen and went on to edit most of Bimal Roy's films. He debuted as director in 1959 with L B Films' Anari starring Raj Kapoor and Nutan. This was followed up by Anuradha, starring Balraj Sahni and Leela Naidu with music by Ravi Shankar. Later, he made the experimental Mem Didi with character artistes Lalita Pawar, David and Jayant.

In 1961 he directed Aashiq starring Raj Kapoor and Padmini and then helmed Asli Naqli starring Dev Anand and Sadhana. In 1964 he directed Sanjh Aur Savera starring Meena Kumari and Guru Dutt. Do Dil (1965) starred Rajshree and Biswajeet. Anupama (1966) which starred Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore was a big hit. He also directed Biwi Aur Makan and Majli Didi starring Dharmendra and Meena Kumari.

But Mukherjee hit Bollywood big time with a string of touching tales and simple comedies through the 70s. His films included Satyakam, Anand (1970), Buddha Mil Gaya (1971), Bawarchi (1972), Abhimaan (1973), Namak Haram (1973), Phir Kab Milogi (1974), Chaitali (1975), Chhupke Chhupke (1975), Mili, Arjun Pandit (1976), Alaap (1977), Kotwal Saab (1977), Gol Maal (1979), Jurmana (1979), Khubsoorat (1980), Naram Garam (1981) and Naukar (1981).

Hrishida's later films like Bemisaal, Rang Birangi, Jhoothi and last year's Jhoot Bole Kaua Kate could not replicate the success of his bull run through the 70s.

Hrishida has won several National awards during his 50-year film career and has served as Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and National Film Development Corporation.

Heart-throb Hrithik Roshan to marry next year
Superstar Hrithik Roshan has offers from Hollywood but would rather stay in the country and break the hearts of millions of his women fans because he intends to get married next year. Hrithik Roshan was in Calcutta to promote his latest film "Fiza". The aura of glamour around Hrithik far overshadowed what "Fiza" is all about. There were massive traffic jams in the city as the Hrithik went around the city keeping commitments. Hrithikmania is far from over. At the question and answer session he faced from the media, women expressed dismay when he told his plans to marry his girlfriend Suzzane Khan next year. But if there was disappointment among fans, Hrithik had reason to be elated for one female voice professed to love him even if his films flopped. The meet was preceded by a screening of excerpts from the film. The producer of the film Pradip Guha said the film was conceived in August 1999, shot from October 31 and releasing on September 8 this year. The cameras were trained on Hrithik, who stood up and folding his arms across his muscled chest. But that was not enough for the photographers. So co-star Neha obliged them by standing coyly beside the hero, who put his arm around her. Was he nervous with Fiza? "I was not nervous about my first film, why now?" he shot back. He took five seconds to say "Yes" after the script was read out to him. "It is a fantastic role and very different," he said. He came up with a one-liner on whether he had competition in Abhishek Bachchan. "He is brilliant," Hrithik said. On why he is always surrounded by bodyguards, Hrithik answered: "Do you think my father will allow me to move without a bodyguard after he was shot?". He has offers from Hollywood, but said he hasn't decided.

Aditya Chopra speaks about "Mohabbatein".

My first film "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" was released on the 20th of October 1995. It's taken me 5 years to get to my second film. A lot has changed in these 5 years, the most significant change being the INTERNET. It now allows a director like me to interact with the people who I make films for - people like you who live all over the world but share a common bond with me - the love for INDIAN FILMS. In the coming months I'm going to share with you my thoughts on my latest film MOHABBATEIN - So join me and lets discover together why "Some love stories live forever".

The basic story idea of MOHABBATEIN was conceived by me more than 10 yrs ago. I always thought that it would be the film that I would begin my directorial career with. But with time I realised that I needed a little more maturity as a director to really do justice to this story, so I set it aside and made Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge instead.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge released and I started work on DIL TO PAGAL HAI, as I had promised my father that I would write it for him. Dil To Pagal Hai released in Oct 97 and now it was time for me to begin work on my second film. But by now I was quite bored of love stories and I decided that I would definitely not make a love story. So I started work on an idea of a thriller that I had with me for a long time, but all the while my mind kept drifting to MOHABBATEIN. I realised that there is something in that story that keeps drawing me to it, so one day I just shut my thriller file and casually picked up my 10 yr old MOHABBATEIN file - that one simple action decided my second film for me.

The moment I finished reading my 10 yr old notes I knew that I just had to make this film - but there was one problem - it was all about love and I had promised myself that I would not make a film that would deal only with love. The original idea of MOHABBATEIN was basically about 3 love stories - a story of 3 friends who fall in love with 3 different girls in different circumstances - a film that runs as 3 parallel stories but culminate together. The basic excitement for me then as a writer and director was to try and pull off 3 love stories in one film and yet make it look like one story. But the excitement was not enough because at the end of the day the scenes would be about boys and girls meeting, falling in love, breaking up etc - something that I had already done, something that was coming too easy to me, I wanted something more challenging. I was not in a mood to write love scenes only, I wanted to work on something stronger, something more dramatic - something that would revolve around the confrontation of 2 strong characters - And then I got it - it had to be a story of 2 men, 2 strong and stubborn men - A man who believed in love - A man who did not believe in love - And the 3 love stories - That was the story I was waiting for - That was the film I was destined to make - That is MOHABBATEIN. "Mohabbatein will be releasing on the 27th of October worldwide" Cast of MOHABBATEIN Starring:Amitabh Bachchan,Shahrukh khan,Anupam Kher,Aarchana puransingh. Presenting:Uday Chopra,Shamita shetty,Jugal Hansraj,Kim sharma,Jimmy shergill,Preeti Jhangaini. Special Appearance:Helen,Saurabh Shukla,Shefali chaya,Amrish Puri. Story,Screenplay, dialogues and direction:Aditya Chopra Produced by:Yash Chopra Music by:Jatin Lalit Lyrics by:Anand Bakshi Playback singer:Lata Mangeshkar,Udit Narayan,Jaspinder Narula
