Review of film Dhai Akshar Prem Ke
Starring: Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Sonali Bendre

Directed by: Raj Kanwar

Rewind and replay. You're watching Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge again. The print is a little bad, the characters seem a trite fudged but it's the same look. Big happy families, hundreds of offshoots of the family tree living in the same house, a young man in their midst and a pretty daughter they're trying to off-load. More or less similar scenario. The details of the story:

Captain Karan rescues a damsel in distress. She is about to jump off the cliff into the raging waters below. He is irritated with her for making him miss the bus. Literally. Then he hears her tale of woe. But instead of saying 'Oh fie!" and pushing her from the cliff himself, he sympathises with her. Her problem? You have to hear this to believe it. She, Aishwarya Rai comes from a frugal family. Her father is the official HOD. Every other member of the house toes the line. And that makes it quite a long line considering the numbers that live in the house. The grand old lady, Sushma Seth, whose snow-white hair looks like it has been plucked off the cotton trees. Her two sons, Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher, their two wives, her two daughters and their husbands, a host of servants and a number of kids. But apart from Aishwarya, the eldest and the waris of the old man's crores, one is not sure till the end of the film which parents are responsible for which progenies.

Now Aishwarya is the first girl from the family who wanted to go for further studies. No, not overseas for a doctorate. But just a little further away from home to go to college. But before graduation itself, her parents want her to get married so the family call her up and informs her. In a fluster, she lies and says that she is already married. Bas! That's enough to make her an outcast. Dejected she wants to commit suicide. That's where the dashing young army officer enters. Uh-oh, before this suicide attempt though, she has been witness to a murder. But lets save that bit to the end.

This officer is a gentleman and he offers to take her home and explain to her family. But the minute they step off the carriage at the doorstep of the family mansion, a silly servant mistakes him for the damaad and the rest of the family follow suit. Soon, the entire lot is out dancing for joy. The old man isn't too happy about this, in fact he's furious, but who cares. Soon the Captain becomes a part of this family. And forgets to go home. To the girl whom he professes to love-Sonali Bendre. But one thing leads to another and even finds himself in a karva chauth ceremony. Finally, reason strikes and he leaves in the darkness of the night. Of course she knows and lays bare her soul to him, but though by now he realises that his preconceived fundas in life have taken a beating he leaves.

Needless to add, he returns.

A film that holds itself only on one performance. Abhishek Bachchan. He is terrific. Stepping out of the shadow of his father with admirable ease. An actor who is bound to leave his mark in films to come. As for the rest of the film, Kanwar could use a smarter scriptwriter who could flesh out the characters better and give us a good story. What we have is a wafer thin story and cardboard one-dimensional characters. What a waste. And finally Ash. She's gorgeous, at times she even acts well, but still a long way to go baby!

Rating: Average.

Abhishek Bachchan's third film "Dhai Akshar Prem Ke" running
Abhishek Bachchan's "Dhai Akshar Prem Ke" which released all over India on September 29 is running successfully throughout India. The film also stars Aishwarya Rai, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil and Salman Khan and Sonali Bendre in guest appearances. The music of the film is by Jatin-Lalit. The film is produced and directed by Raj Kanwar. "Dhai Akshar Prem Ke" is Abhishek Bachchan's third release this year after "Refugee" and "Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya" Both "Refugee" and "Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya" failed to become big hits at the box office. With "Dhai Akshar Prem Ke" getting a good initial at the box office, the coming weeks will only tell if the film can turn out to be a big hit for Abhishek. Suddenly everyone seems to be wondering if Abhishek Bachchan really has a bright future ahead. A lot of people within the film industry seem to think he's been overhyped. A young director who wished not to be named said, "Abhishek has the brooding intensity of his father, but that's about it. He has neither the personality nor the talent to carry off the role of the new Bachchan in tinsel town." Abhishek Bachchan is expected to be as proficient and screen-friendly as megastar Amitabh Bachchan in his very first few films. At the same time he is also expected to be an actor in his own right. Audiences want a double- deckered thrill while watching Abhishek. This places him in a peculiar crisis. If his genes assert themselves prominently, as they did in "Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya", they crib he is overdoing the Bachchan tag. If his genes become dormant, they say he is not able to extract from his father's super shadow!

Indian talent eyes Hollywood
The doors to the Mecca of filmmaking are finally opening for Indian actors. While Ayesha Dharkar's sublime beauty and Om Puri's acting prowess have long captivated the western mind, filmmakers from Hollywood are now wooing the muscle-flexing hunks and glam dolls of sadda tinseltown, too..

The latest buzz in the industry is that the brawny lad Hrithik has been signed to play Sylvester Stallone's kid brother in a Hollywood actioner. Rumor has it that Shah Rukh will pair with Australian actress Radha Mitchell in the Los Angeles-based filmmaker Renee Chhabria's next flick.

What's more, the tall and beautiful Tabu is off to Europe to shoot for an Italian film. Taking the cue, even Madhuri Dixit has expressed her wish to work in Hollywood..

Apart from the astronomical sums that Hollywood producers pay, what lures our actors is the highly professional attitude of their filmmakers who put quality above everything else.

Carving a niche in Hollywood would certainly be a superlative achievement for our actors. More than anything it will prove that there is more to our heroes than pumped-up sinews and designer clothes.

The Devgans make cyber waves
The star couple Ajay Devgan and Kajol has entered the cyber world with the launch of their portal Cineplore.com.

While Aptech is the technical partner, Mumbai based Liquid Equity Capital will manage the business and finances. The portal seeks to streamline the unorganized film industry online.

The portal targets the people involved in filmmaking – the film distributors, producers and financers. According to the star couple the basic idea is to eliminate the middleman and provide distributors and producers with a wider choice.

However, only a small portion of the site is available for free browsing.

After creating waves onscreen, Kajol the mastermind behind the portal, plans to make cyber waves. She is also the director of the company.

The company will be concentrating on three branch areas, silver screen, small screen and personal website. While Ajay will look after films, Kajol has taken charge of the small screen.

Kajol is also interested in promoting promising actors, musicians and scriptwriters. The duo has roped many others for their dream project. Among them are Yash Johar, Mahesh Bhatt.

Hrithik: Jiving right through stardom
The man surely draws oodles of attention. The Hrithik mania is still raging even after Fiza fizzed out after bubbling a bit. Fans never seem to have enough of the hunky-dory hero.

So what does a director do to have a smooth sailing with his shooting without fans and the media snooping around all the time? Zoom off to some foreign locale and get on with the canning business. Well, that’s what showman Subhash Ghai has done.

Ghai has flown off to London for a month for the first schedule of his film Yaadein. The movie stars Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Jackie Shroff and is on a smooth run without anyone gate-crashing to cause any delay. Although, the busy star that he is, Hrithik couldn’t make it for the muhurat of the film earlier in London.

That’s the price one pays for stardom. But the current heart-throb seemed to have taken it in his stride and is keeping everyone happy – film makers, fans, friends, family and the fourth estate. That’s the way, a-ha a-ha!

Twinkle Khanna: Khoob Jamegi Mehfil Jab Milenge Twinkle, Sonali, Sunjay Aur Govinda!
ThisThe little star, Twinkle is busy these days with Chi Chi. No, not for any other reason, but cos she will soon be shooting with him for Govinda on David Dhawan's new comic caper, 'Jodi No.1.' Her second film with the dancing demon, Twinkle Khanna has apparently been working out real hard. Not so she can look nice and young opposite the roly-poly Chi Chi but so she can give the fit Sonali Bendre (who also stars in the film with Sunju baba ) a run for her money. With one roly-poly jodi and one tandroost one, Twinkle certainly wants to be a part of the fit brigade.

The ‘Ganga’ that Govinda plays
Mahesh Manjrekar entered Bollywood like a ballistic missile with the highly explosive movie Vaastav. It went on to hit the box-office with a bang and picked up a couple of awards and rave reviews.

The debutant director wouldn’t have asked for anything better. That was last year.

The talented young director’s forthcoming offering is a totally different flick. Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai is very unlike what Vaastav was. Produced by Jackie Shroff and wife Ayesha Shroff, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai centers round the life of a village simpleton, Ganga, portrayed by amchi Chi Chi, Govinda and the twists and turns fate offers him.

Typical of a down-to-earth, honest bumpkin from the village, Ganga is unaware of life on the fast track. His only loves in life are his parents and his sweetheart, the gorgeous village belle Saawri (Sonali Bendre). Soon, Ganga learns that he is actually a foster child of the people who have raised him. His real parents are a city-based tycoon and his wife (Shakti Kapoor and Himani Shivpuri). Ganga sets off for the city, in search of his real parents.

In the heady milieu of the metropolis, Ganga discovers a whole new world of culture and values, completely removed from what he had been brought up on. He also meets a hip city girl, Tina (Rinké Khanna), who falls in love with him.

This starts the whole comical jamboree. The naive Ganga falls into one soup after the other, as some sly city-dwellers try to take advantage of his naiveté. How Ganga outwits them and whether he finds his parents is what Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai is all about.

Govinda fits into Ganga’s character beautifully. It’s Govinda at his best with his jiving and the svelte Sonali has done a great job keeping in tune. For Rinke Khanna it’s a tight ropewalk after the box-office disaster of her maiden film Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi.

Anand Raj Anand's music has already climbed the charts and has become daily staple for most TV channels. Watch out for it.

Kajol: Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi
So, her new project (directed by Rahul Rawail) 'Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi' has been a rather low-key affair. Well, the good news is that the film is nearing completion and the dubbing will start soon. Starring Sunil Shetty and Rishi Kapoor, it has Kajol in a double (trouble) role, we believe. Looks like an attempt at making up for what we've missed of her over the few months. Do we hear anyone complaining? Now if only we got to see more of Sridevi and Madhuri and Padmini and …

Melita's Feedback-
Hello once again, I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy your newslette, and look forward to every issue. I was just reading the articles on the review of Fiza and HDAPH. Contrary to what people call " family movie" HDAPH just isn't one of them.. Just because the story has involvement's of kids issue of rape and marital misconceptions doesn't make it a family oriented movie. It was more of a movie that gives the already bogged down middle class viewers a dose of higherground morality. There were so many holes in the sequence and the flow of the story, where everyone and their dogs are trying to be martyrs. On the other hand Fiza is a refreshing change to the other movies made based on the Bombay riots. It focuses on just Fiza's quest to find out what happened to her brother. There is no long dialogues about how the Hindu and the Muslim communities to stick together and blah blah blah...It is a film for the intelligent kind, who can read thru the emotions of hurt and anguish that is depicted so flawlessly by all the actors. It is light spirited at times but always keeping the intensity, which is at the core of this movie- alive. So a family entertainer is Fiza which shows violence in proportions, dealing with real life issues of finding jobs, finding and losing love, issues of trust, peer influences, and family bonding thru hardship. I think most families identify with these situations than a guy (Anil Kapoor) who is rich, single, housing his father's illegitimate kids as his own and a beautiful rape victim (Ash) who is comfortably playing the ultimate role of martyrdom. And phuleeez, Let's not screech from the roof tops on how women need to be treated. If this lecture is needed in this time and age then I wonder to what kind of viewers is this movie catering to? This review might sound opinionated, but it's mine.

With best regards Melita Rego
