A golden run on the silver screen
While most Bollywood films released in the past one year have been
rejected outright by the audience, one film continues to mesmerise the
masses for five years now. Yes, the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ) has recently surpassed the record
of Sholay, which ran at Mumbai's Minerva theatre for 265 consecutive
weeks.
Now into its 268th week, DDLJ shows no signs of vacating Maratha
Mandir -- the theatre where it is being screened. The theatre, of
course, has no plans to discontinue the film. After all, DDLJ is
proving to be an ekdum paisa-wasool film!
Released in October 1995, DDLJ's matinee show continues to draw in the
crowds. And even today, the audience breaks into thunderous applause
and whistles during the song Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye, says Maratha
Mandir manager Pravin Rane. ``It is mostly youngsters in the age group
of 18-25 who frequent the show. There are movie-buffs who have come to
see DDLJ as many as 20 times,'' he adds.
So, what makes DDLJ click? By the look of things, the film's
storyline, which involves the London-bred hero winning over the girl's
family instead of eloping with her, seems to be the magic formula
behind DDLJ's success. Throw in exotic foreign locales, catchy music
and brilliant performances, and you have a wholesome family
entertainer on your hands.
Ask Vikas Modi why he has seen DDLJ seven times and the 23-year-old
says, ``It is a well-made film. The storyline marks a break from
Bollywood's conventional plots in which the hero and the heroine defy
their parents and elope. And the music is simply great.''
For 21-year old Mohit Surve, spending three hours at Maratha Mandir in
the afternoon is the best form of ``time-pass!'' Explains Mohit, ``As
I stay pretty close to the theatre, I sometimes drop by to watch DDLJ.
Sometimes, I even bring guests along.'' For the record, Mohit stopped
counting his DDLJ scorecard after the figure crossed 10.
Incidentally, film-maker Aditya Chopra's maiden venture has been a
tremendous success in the overseas circuit too. And father Yash Chopra
is proud of Aditya's achievement. ``DDLJ is the film which is closest
to my heart. Among all our films, DDLJ has made the greatest
difference to me financially and emotionally,'' elaborates Yash
Chopra.
Meanwhile, Maratha Mandir proposes to continue screening DDLJ at
tax-free rates. Explains the theatre's executive-director Manoj Desai,
``With DDLJ proving to be a profitable proposition, it makes business
sense to persist with the film rather than try out new releases. We
will screen DDLJ as long as people come to see it.'' And that, going
by DDLJ's track record, could be a very long time!

Sonali to tie the knot!
Looks like it is the wedding season in Bollywood. After the much talked-about Hrithik-Suzanne and Akshay-Twinkle marriage, the buzz is rife that the lanky lass Sonali Bendre too is readying her trousseau.
Sonali and her beau Goldie Behl have been going around for quite some time, and if the latest rumors from the Bollywood are anything to go by, the twosome are planning to tie the knot. However, the love birds are keen to follow Akshay- Twinkle's example and take the marital plunge in a rather hush-hush manner.
So besotted is the man with Sonali that he has even penned a song exclusively for her in his film.
Well it looks like Sonali has made the right choice.

Box Office Report : Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi
I don't want to sound cynical, but things are going from bad to worse. The first month of 2001 is about to end, but there is no ray of hope. The film industry is still thirsting for that one hit.
The two new releases of last week KUCH KHATTI KUCH MEETHI and ZUBEIDAA haven't done much to elevate the situation. Despite starring two of the most talented actresses of today, the two films did not fetch even a face-saving initial at several parts of the country, including Gujarat (parts), Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
Does it mean that the audience of today is more interested in a hero-dominated flick? A section of the film industry does believe in this theory, but I have a counter question for those who do so. If a hero-dominated flick is what clicks eventually, how does one explain the frosty response to RAJU CHACHA, KHILADI 420 and CHAMPION, films that orbit around the heroes?
But, I guess, whenever a film does not live up to our expectations, we start finding flaws.
But there's no disputing the fact that KUCH KHATTI KUCH MEETHI would have fared much, much better had it been propped up tenaciously before its release. Also, the film came too close to RAJU CHACHA, which also starred Rishi Kapoor and Kajol in principal roles.
As for ZUBEIDAA, a fragment of the film industry feels that the lack of a big hero curtailed its prospects at the turnstiles. Manoj Bajpai is a good actor, but he does not look the character he portrays. Also, the disastrous response to GHAATH and DIL PE MAT LE YAAR has made a dent in Manoj's popularity.
Since ZUBEIDAA revolves around a Muslim woman, I expected the film to fare better in the Muslim-dominated belt of Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad-Secunderabad). Sadly, the film was not well supported in this expanse as well.
The producers of KUCH KHATTI KUCH MEETHI and ZUBEIDAA are optimistic that the box-office collections would pick up with word of mouth publicity. But, to be honest, those days are over. With pirated VCDs and video cassettes flooding the market in the opening week itself, the prospects of the biggest of films look bleak.
To add to add our anguish is the round-the-clock entertainment provided by the satellite channels. All for free. Earlier there was just KAUN BANEGA CROREPATI, which ruled the roost from Monday to Thursday, but there's KYOONKI SAAS BHI KABHI BAHU THHEE that's responsible for the night shows sporting an empty look. And the coming days will witness JEETO CHAPPAR PHAAD KE ruining the prospects of feature films over the weekend (Fridays to Sundays).
But what terrifies me is the murky epoch that lies ahead. With AASHIQ releasing this week and KASOOR slated for release next week, the months of February and March will witness just one major release ONE TWO KA FOUR. The next significant release is in the last week of March RAHUL, a Subhash Ghai-Prakash Jha co-production. But this film has no stars to talk of!
The question is, with no big film in sight, how will the theatres keep the show going? Theatres patronised by the masses may not find the going tough since there is a strong line-up of low-budget films in the coming weeks, but what about high-status theatres? How will they fill the vacuum?
Only a miracle can take us out of this mess!

Movie Preview : Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya
Govinda, Jackie, Tabu, Pooja Batra and Govinda's nephew Vinay Anand will be seen together in 'Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya', produced by Mansoor Siddiqui and directed by Rajat Rawail, who happens to be the nephew of Rahul Rawail. 'Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya' is inspired by Yash Chopra's 'Doosra Aadmi'. 'Doosra Aadmi' starred Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Raakhee, Neetu Singh and Parikshit Sahni. And in 'Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya' too, the story revolves around five important characters.
Vinay and Pooja Batra are in love with each other and subsequently get married. Vinay starts a modelling agency and for a product, wants to opt for the same model who had made a place for herself in the ad world sometime back - Tabu. But there is a problem here. Only Jackie Shroff knows the whereabouts of Tabu. When Vinay approaches Jackie for her address, Jackie refuses to divulge details, adding that Vinay ought to stay away from her since she is an eccentric woman. But Vinay is firm on assigning this task to Tabu alone and somehow convinces Jackie for her address. When Vinay approaches her with the offer, Tabu accepts it instantly because she sees her past in Vinay - Govinda - who is already dead. The music is by Uttam Singh, who has composed two songs, while the remaining songs have been composed by Adesh Shrivastav.
The film has been shot at panoramic locations of Mauritius, Canada and London. The movie is scheduled for release in October.

Abhishek plays an ambitious young man in Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai
Goldie Behl's Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai starring Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Rani Mukherjee and Sushmita Sen is nearing completion and will be released this year.
According to the unit members, the movie is an emotional autobiographical which revolves around Abhishek who comes to Bombay from Varanasi to make it big here. He plays an ambitious young man who will do anything to become rich.
Seems an interesting plot? Let's wait for the movie to release to decide.
