Malaysian clerics cry foul over Indian films
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - A national body of Muslim
clerics has urged the Malaysian government to limit
television airtime for Indian-made Hindi movies because
they promote "immoral values," news reports said on
Thursday.
Hindi movies are a hit in Malaysia not just among the
more than 2 million ethnic Indians who live here, but
also other ethnic groups who make up the 22 million
population, including the Malay Muslim majority.
Malaysians throng to cinemas to catch latest the Indian
releases even if they don't understand the dialogue,
which is often in Hindi.
Indian movies a generally more tame in terms of sex and
obscene words than Hollywood movies, which are usually
censored before being shown in Malaysia.
But Harussani Zakaria, spokesman for the clerics, said
Indian movies contained references to Hindi beliefs which
were contrary to those of Islam and could be a bad
influence on young Malay Muslims.
"There were some movies which carried excessive immoral
values for youngsters to copy," he was quoted as saying
by The Star newspaper.
The portrayal of passion on screen could "arouse the
viewers to unleash their desires even on their own
children," he said, according to the Malay-language
Utusan Malaysia daily.
The Indian film industry - nicknamed Bollywood after its
main production centre, Bombay - is the world's largest,
churning out nearly 800 movies a year in a host of
languages.
The movies are usually formulaic, several hours long, and
have a number of song-and-dance routines.
Bollywood films are screened on Malaysian television
stations a few times every week. The clerics are asking
for this be cut down to once a week. Top
Shah, Rizvi sent to judicial custody till Feb 28
Mumbai - Film financier Bharat Shah, producer Nasim Rizvi
and his assistant Abdul Rahim Allah Baksh, facing charges
of nexus with the underworld, were on Wednesday remanded
to judicial custody till February 28 by a special court
here.
They were produced before designated judge A P Bhangale
who directed police to file chargesheet as early as
possible.
Shah was whisked away to enforcement directorate (ED)
office for interrogation regarding alleged hawala deals.
The court allowed ED counsel Arun Gupte's prayer to
question Shah the entire day. Earlier, he was grilled on
two other occasions.
In a related development, the special court has called
for a report from the superintendent of Central prison
here on allegations made by Abdul Rahim that he was
threatened by an undertrial when he was brought to the
court in a police van.
Abdul Rahim's counsel, Rakesh Parikh, filed a petition
urging for the transfer of his client from Central prison
in Mumbai to Thane Jail on the same ground. His plea will
be heard after the jailor submits his report.
Shah's lawyers Shiraz Rahimtoola and Vibhav Krishna said
the remand application did not justify further custody of
their client and urged for a direction to police to file
chargesheet so that Shah could apply for bail.
The court had earlier rejected Shah's bail plea but
allowed him to plead for liberty after the chargesheet is
filed.
Public prosecutor Rohini Salian submitted that police had
on Tuesday obtained a sample of gangster Chhota Shakeel's
voice. It would be sent to laboratory for testing. She
said the chargesheet would be filed within the stipulated
90 days.
The judge perused crime reports and observed that
investigations were in progress. He asked the
investigating officer to complete the probe as early as
possible and file chargesheet by the end of this month.
Police claim to have recorded telephonic talks between
Rizvi and Karachi-based gangster Chhota Shakeel which
reveal the Bollywood-underworld nexus.
They allege that film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, produced
by Rizvi and financed by Shah, was funded by Shakeel.
According to police, Abdul Rahim was Shakeel's man in
Bollywood and acted as a conduit between the Karachi-
based gangster and Rizvi.
Rizvi had told the police that the film was his own
venture while Shah has claimed that he paid Rs 12.55
crore to Rizvi to make the film.
The court has attached the film and appointed well-known
distributor S S Jain as the court receiver to release the
movie and deposit sale proceeds thereof in a bank. At the
end of the trial the money would be handed over to the
person who is legally entitled to it.

Ash's mom's new role
It is a known fact that Shabbir Boxwala, an associate of Rajiv Rai, has turned independent producer. But the latest on his project is that none other than Aishwarya Rai's mother, Mrs. Vrinda Rai, is writing the script. Sometime back, the rumour mills were agog with the news that Aishwarya had turned producer and her mother would be writing the script of the film, which was to be directed by Joy Augustine. However, Ash and her mom had denied the news outright then. But there's no denying that Mrs. Rai has taken to scripting with Shabbir's film.
Starring Arjun Ramphal in the lead, the film will be directed by Naresh Malhotra. Now let's see whether Ash agrees to work in a film that is scripted by mommy dearest!

Shahrukh-Ash together again?
The overactive brains are working full time and churning out stories without verifying facts. Just last week, it was misreported in a section of the press that Venus had signed the JOSH siblings, Shah Rukh and Aishwarya Rai, for their next project, to be directed by Priyadarshan. We decided to confirm the news for our dear readers and contacted Ganesh Jain to find out the truth. And this is what Jain had to say, "It is true that we have signed Shah Rukh, Aishwarya and Priyadarshan, but we are still undecided, whether to bring them together in one film or cast them in different projects. Everything is uncertain as of now." Well, it will be a treat to see the MOHABBATEIN pair together again, what say?

Karishma Can Look Back Over Her Shoulder at the Competition
Karishma Kapoor is hoping to make it big again and regain her top position in the Bollywood. When Madhuri Dixit departed from the top, Karishma filled the void. She won a National Award for her performance in 'Dil To Pagal Hai' and 'Raja Hindustani's success was still in the air. Her role in 'Fiza' was appreciated by the critics, but the general viewer was not happy to see his dream girl in a deglamourised role. Some say she took to art films like 'Fiza and 'Zubeidaa' just to prove her caliber and to earn a good reputation. Now, Karishma is back to mainstream cinema with the release of 'Aashiq', co-starring Bobby Deol. This is her second film with Bobby, after Kundan Shah directed them in 'Hum To Mohabbat Karega'.

Has Juhi's career come to an end?
Marriage has always been the bane of Hindi film heroines. It's the one thing that ends careers more ruthlessly than any number of flops or scandals. The taboo act that the public never seem to forgive a heroine.
It put a full stop for decades to Jaya Bhaduri's shining career, finally releasing her only recently from its unforgiving prison.
It shut down the filmographies of many beautiful and talented heroines as varied as Sridevi, Kimi Katkar, Poonam Dhillon, Rati Agnihotri, Mumtaz, Waheeda Rehman, Tanuja, Saira Banu, Anita Raaj, Padmini Kolhapure...the list goes on.
Most recently, it rang alarm bells in the careers of Madhuri Dixit and Kajol, taking two of the most bankable female box office stars out of the reckoning as far as moviegoers and the industry were concerned. Even thought they are still quite active and visible, their films bombed at the box office.
Down the decades, heroines have either retired gracefully from celluloid careers or they've struggled stubbornly to prove the taboo wrong -- as Madhuri and Kajol are still struggling to prove.
Those who step off the silver screen gracefully often return in another avatar later in life. As the evergreen Jaya Bachchan has done of late, and the timeless Helen too.
But the ones who continue to fight the taboo are doomed to failure.
But the most amazingly defiant case is Juhi Chawla.
A year ago, she stunned fans and the industry with her secret marriage to longtime sweetheart industrialist Jay Mehta.
Now, besides being happily married, she's preening in her new role. As a mommy dearest.
That's a One Two Ka Four shot that's hit her career so hard, the bruises show!
Her latest release One Two Ka Four is due out at almost the same time as her newborn bundle of joy. After that, fans and well wishers (and disappointed producers) are in for a long wait for the next Juhi starrer.
And as any filmwallah or informed fan knows, no movies means no magic. Out of sight is out of mind.
Is this the end of Juhi career?
Before you make a guess, take a look at what Juhi's got lined up for the near future.
