First the kiss, now legs -- DD bans two more ads
After theClose-up kiss, it's now Wrangler jeans and LML motorbike. Ads for
both have been banned from DD's platform. While the sight of a long-legged
woman taking her pants off to douse a blaze started by three bumbling men
out in the world was found to be downright offensive and suggestive, the LML
ad where there is little to distinguish between a woman and a motorbike, was
struck down by DD as ''plain distasteful" and degrading to women.
Welcome to the new moral order being ushered by DD and I&B Minister Sushma
Swaraj. Even before Swaraj could say cut, DD has decided to do away with
these ads that officials now say violate the accepted code for commercial
advertising.
The code for commercial advertising states: No advertisement shall be
permitted which project a derogatory image of women. Women must not be
portrayed in a manner that emphasises passive, submissive qualities and
encourages them to play a subordinate, secondary role in the family and
society.
Three years ago, if it was CEO S.S. Gill, who struck down all fairness
creams as being offensive to women, now it is Swaraj who is wielding the
broom. The other ads which could not see the light of day are the Allwyn
refrigerator ad which is yet to make its debut on private channels, for
making fun of the Karnataka police for their inability in nabbing elusive
forest brigand Veerappan. The other commercial lampoons Hritik Roshan.
Viewers who desire to watch these commercials can, of course, do so on
private channels.

Lure of long films
If you thought Mohabbatein was a lengthy film, think again.
After Aditya Chopra, it's actor Aamir Khan who has made a very, very lengthy
film.
Initially Aamir's first production venture, Lagaan had a running time of
four-and-a-half hours. The film has now been edited to three-and-a-half
hours.
But Aamir, who is keen that the film prove to be a profitable venture, has
decided to limit it to three-and-a-half hours only if his distributors think
it
worthwhile.
Aamir and Adi sure seem to think length is strength.
Meanwhile, industry insiders have been raving about the music of Lagaan. The
songs have been composed by A R Rahman and written by Javed Akhtar, and have
been choreographed by Raju Khan.

Rizvi, Shah remanded to judicial custody
Film producer Nasim Rizvi, his assistant, Abdul Rahim Allah Baksh, and
financier Bharat Shah were on Wednesday remanded to judicial custody till
March 9 in a case of alleged nexus with the underworld even as the police
informed a special court that it would file chargesheet on that day.
In a related development, the court ordered the police to return the Honda
car of Rizvi, producer of film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, on certain
conditions. The vehicle was seized after Rizvi was arrested on December 13
last.
Hearing Rizvi's plea for return of the car, designated judge A P Bhangale
ordered the police to hand over the vehicle to his wife, Nahid, after public
prosecutor Rohini Salian submitted that the state had no objection in this
regard.
The court, however, directed Rizvi's wife to give an undertaking assuring
that she will not transfer or hand over the vehicle to anyone during the
pendency of this case. Defence lawyer, Sayaji Nangare, assured at Rizvi's
wife would execute such bond as early as possible.
Earlier, the prosecutor urged for the judicial custody of all the three
accused on the ground that investigation was in progress. She also said
compelling grounds had been made out in the crime reports to interrogate
witnesses.
Shah's counsel Shiraz Rahimtoola opposed the remand of his client saying
that he was being tried by the media. He urged the court to reject the
remand application and pass consequential orders.

Bajrang Dal demands ban on Shah-financed movie
The Bajrang Dal demanded a ban on the Hindi movie "Chori Chori Chupke
Chupke" alleging it was funded by the ISI-Mumbai Underworld nexus and
threatened to oppose film stars and others associated with "such
anti-national ventures."
"We demand a ban on the film. If it is not done, we will not allow its
screening anywhere in the country," the Sangh Parivar outfit's National
Convenor Surendra Jain told reporters here.
Alleging that Underworld don Chhota Shakeel, a close aide of Dubai-based
kingpin Dawood Ibrahim, had funded the film, he said,
"We will educate the citizens that money paid to see such movies go into the
pockets of the anti-national elements and they are used to nurture ISI
activities in the country."
Asked whether the protests would be violent, he said: "We will adopt all
methods to prevent the screening of the film."

Pooja Batra arrested in assault case
Model-turned film actress Pooja Batra and her brother, Chetan, were arrested
last Friday (24 Feb) in a case of alleged assault and subsequently released
on
personal bond of Rs 950 each, police said here today.
The duo assaulted a postman who came to their residence at 'Aishwarya
Building' in suburban Andheri to deliver a letter sent by speed-post.
The postman insisted on Pooja receiving the mail personally because the
letter was addressed to her. However, Chetan said he would receive it on
her behalf. This led to a verbal fight between the two, police said.
Pooja came out of the house and joined her brother in the brawl with the
postman. According to a complaint lodged by the postman, they allegedly
banged his head against a wall as a result of which he suffered injuries.
The postman, who was treated at Cooper Hospital, filed a complaint with the
D N Nagar police station. Pooja and her brother were arrested and later
granted bail.

Shah Rukh slapped with a legal notice!
Shah Rukh's new home, 'Mannat' hasn't been too lucky for him! Apparently, he has been slapped with a legal notice under the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code for not having paid the dues for his bungalow, which he had bought from Subash Dubash for Rs. 6 crores. He was required to pay 50% of the amount to the state government as revenue, which he failed to. As a result, the suburban district collector, C. S. Sangitrao rushed a notice to Shah Rukh threatening to attach the bungalow. Sangitrao says that he had been issuing notices for a year but no one bothered. "Yesterday, Khan kept calling me up. Basically it is the original lessee who should pay. I had issued notices to him with a copy to Shah Rukh, who claimed he was a law-abiding citizen and either he or the lessee was to pay the amount due to the government. I have given hearing to the matter and have built up a case." Meanwhile, Shah Rukh maintains that he was busy and couldn't meet the collector due to security reasons. He has however agreed to pay the dues for his house.

Sunil Shetty: from beefcake to actor of substance
Sunil Shetty's success has surprised many a trade pundit in Bollywood.
Dismissed until recently as a stiff wooden muscleman, Shetty is today recognized as one of the more reliable male stars of the Hindi film world. The Filmfare Award for his performance in "Dhadkan" has added inches to his career graph.
"I always say god had given me much more than I asked for," the happy actor told India Abroad News Service, taking time off from his packed schedule to speak on his triumphant journey from beefcake to sensitive actor.
"Even when I had some failures some time back I still signed good films. To this day, no director ever complains that I come even five minutes late on the sets. When I first started with a film called 'Balwaan' I got a lot of flak. Today I feel I've something to show for my struggle and hard work," he said.
Shetty sees the award as the high point in his career. "It makes me proud and happy because it has everyone around me proud and happy for me. Not just my parents, my wife and two children, but also my driver, cook, the watchman and lift man of my building," he said. "The staffers in one of my restaurants had tears in their eyes. Now I want to give good performances for their sake as much as for my own."
Shetty's forthcoming films are designed to build on his reputation as an actor. After the long-delayed film "Officer" releases this Friday, Shetty's next two releases would be Mahesh Manjrekar's "Ahsaas," an emotional father-son story shot in picturesque Goa, and Priyadarshan's comedy "Yeh Tera Ghar, Yeh Mera Ghar" about the housing problem in Mumbai.
Shetty, who runs several garment outlets and restaurants all over Mumbai, says acting is his main passion. He plans to turn film producer by the end of this year. "That's right, I'm going to produce a film with Ripples Films, who have produced my forthcoming 'Yeh Tera Ghar, Yeh Mera Ghar.' We've signed E. Niwas of 'Shool' fame to direct the film. It's an emotional film about the death of a musician and how a criminal comes into the dead man's family. I know the film will be highly appreciated," he said.
For an actor who was dismissed as a businessman flirting with films, Shetty has come a long way. His impressive and long list of directors includes the cream of the filmmaking crop -- Gulzar, J.P. Dutta, Priyadarshan, Dharmesh Darshan, Mahesh Manjrekar and Rajiv Rai. By April 15 this year, Shetty says he hopes to complete all his old assignments. He then moves to his new crop of films.
The eager-to-improve actor says he's willing to work for free if he believes in a subject and director. "I won't work in films I don't believe in. I don't need the money. I have everything. Now I just want to hold on to the reputation that I've built with such difficulty," he said.
Shetty was known as the muscle-flexing Indian Arnold Schwarzenegger long before Hrithik Roshan made muscles into a fashion statement in Hindi films. "Now I'm no longer into muscle building. I'm approaching 40 and I'm trying to build a lean physique," confessed the consummate family man who never works on Sundays.
The actor recommends quality time for all the fathers of the world with their children. To strengthen the filial bond, Shetty plans to open an indoor cricket academy in Mumbai, where fathers would be forced spend at least some quality time with their sons. "From now on I want all my work, whether it's my films or my other businesses, to be family-oriented," said Shetty.

40000 enjoyed Hrithik's concert in Delhi
The show went on as expected with 40,000 hearts beating for the star of the new millennium : Hrithik Roshan. "The Roshan Show" was everything it promised to bring, with live performance by Hrithik on his songs from all his three movies (Kaho Na Pyar Hai, Fiza & Mission Kashmir). He did dance sequences from his hit songs with Namrata Shirodkar and Amisha Patel. Hrithik made his entry in a mask, on an all silver attire. He ended the show with Dil ne dil ko pukara from Kaho Na Pyar Hai. In between his performances, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, and Mohd. Aziz entertained the crowd. Hrithik's wife Suzanne Khan was also there sitting in the first row with the audience. Hrithik also shared how nervous he was in his first few performances by telling the crowd how he ran into Archana Puran Singh in the bathroom backstage, and then realized it was ladies toilet. Other than that mis-hap, there weren't any other to report. Show went on nicely, and unbelievably quietly. There were more policemen around the area than the spectators. They were enjoying the show as much as the crowd were with a few of them waving their Laathi with the music. At the end of it all, Hrithik had no reason to say "Kaho Na Pyar Hai" anymore. Hrithik wanted to win what he called Delhi as "Hindustan ka dil", and probably left with even more, and so did Delhi walay. Mission Accomplished.
