Sushma to hardsell Indian locales to Hollywood - ToI
Roberts in Jharkhand, Russel Crowe in Uttaranchal -- only if Union
Information & Broadcasting minister Sushma Swaraj has her way. The minister
is embarking on a mission to the US on June 13, and it is not just the
summer temperatures here that is forcing the trip.
Among her priorities are selling Indian locales to Hollywood studios,
co-production of movies as well as international financing for Bollywood.
Recently back from Jharkhand and Uttaranchal to promote film production in
the two states, she said, ``I think some of the most beautiful natural
scenes and waterfalls are located here and these areas need to be promoted
and developed,'' she said.
``Even people in India are now tired of seeing Indian actors and actresses
against the backdrop of Swiss mountains. Why should our producers spend
their money abroad?'' she added.
A heavy-duty delegation from the Indian entertainment industry will be
accompanying the minister. They include Yash Chopra (Yashraj Films), Yash
Johar(Dharma Production), K K Barjatiya (Rajri Productions), Jay Mehta
(Arelightz Films), Subhash Ghai (Mukta Arts), Kunal Dasgupta (Sony
Entertainment Television) and Ajay Bijli (Bijli Group). The trip has been
organised by FICCI.
``It will be a confidence-building exercise," said Swaraj, ``This is the
first of its kind visit in which a minister will be heading such a big
delegation of the entertainment industry. It is time to focus on potential
of the entertainment industry,'' she added.
Swaraj who is leaving on June 11th has planned meetings in Los Angeles with
representatives of the Motion Pictures Association and a visit to Universal
Studios. In New York she will meet up with executives of Miramax the biggest
buyers of Indian films as well as visit the American Museum of Moving
Images. In Washington, Swaraj will meet up with Jack Walenti, president of
Moving Motion Pictures as well as deliver a keynote address to the Indo-US
business council on IT and entertainment industry.
Swaraj will also be visiting London and Tokyo and meeting up with
representatives of the entertainment industry.
``Unlike other sectors, outdoor film production does not require major
infrastructure investments, just the building of roads and hotels. Even our
studios such as the Ramoji Rao studio are state-of-the art and we need many
more of the same,'' says Swaraj, who was among those at the forefront in
granting of industy status to Bollywood recently, ``This is the ICE (IT,
Communication and Entertainment) age and the goventment wants entertainment
to turn into a major forex earner. We are already exporting films to the
tune of Rs 500-600 crores and this can be multiplied manifold,'' she says.
Swaraj has based her assessment on a recent study by FICCI-Arthur Andersen
study titled `Indian Entertainment Industry: Envisioning for Tomorrow' that
states that the segment is estimated to grow 25 per cent per annum to the
size of about Rs 66 billion by 2005.
``FICCI has got together the delegation and requested me to lead it. I think
it makes a difference if I as a representative of the government promote
entertainment abroad rather than a private individuals doing the same,''
says Swaraj.

Screening of Lagaan, Gadar banned on cable
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday banned cable operators, their
agents and franchisees from showing on their network Hindi films Lagaanand
Gadar-Ek Prem Katha, staring Aaamir Khan and Sunny Deol respectively.
Both the films are scheduled to be released on June 15.
Restraining cable operators from showing the movies on their network, Jusice
A K Sikri in two separate ex-parte interim orders, said the operators would
not transmit, exhibit or show in any manner the films either directly or
through their agents or franchisees.
While 'Lagaan's producer Reena Dutta Khan had filed a suit for restraining
the telecast of the film against Siti Cable, Star Satellite Network, Klin
Cable and Industries Media, Gadar's producer Essel Vision, a subsidiary of
Zee Telefilms, had named 16 cable operators as respondents.
While TV star Gracy Singh will be making her debut on the big screen in
Lagaan as heroine of Aamir Khan, Amisha Patel of Kaho na Pyar Hai fame is
pairing with dashing hero Sunny Deol in Gadar Ek Katha.
The producers of these films said they apprehended that the cable operators
would telecast their films illegally and cause them irreparable financial
and other damages.
The court also directed the police to provide necessary assistant to the
petitioner when any complaint about illegal telecast of the films is brought
to their notice.
It also issued notice to the cable operators, who were named as respondents
and were asked to file their replies.
The next date of hearing in Gadar's case was fixed for August 16 and in
Lagan's on October 4.

Kambakth Ishq is not a copy-Sandeep Chowta
Music director Sandeep Chowta is rather upset about an allegation made in a daily, which states that the 'Kambakth Ishq' song from PYAAR TUNE KYA KIYA was lifted from a foreign song. The report adds that the band from which the song was lifted was planning to sue him for copyright violation. Chowta has called it a case of gross mis-reporting, stating that the said band (Liquid Grooves) is not a band, but a CD-Rom manufactured by a company called Spectrasonics. "This CD-Rom contains rhythms and loops to be used by musicians worldwide. Many eminent musicians including Sting have used these samples," he states. According to him, it is a reference CD-Rom and anyone is entitled to use the samples the minute he purchases it. "Seems like people can't digest the fact that the song is a super-hit," Chowta laughs Top
Lagaan goes Mohabbatein way
Like MOHABBATEIN, LAGAAN will also be screened in cinemas across the country in three shows daily. This decision has been arrived at by the producers of the film -- Aamir Khan and Jhamu Sughand -- keeping the 3 hour plus length of the film in mind. Refuting rumours that they had to reduce the price marginally due to this reason (the distributors cannot perform four shows daily to cash in on the craze!), Jhamu tells me that the price was never an issue with the distributors.
In another development, Jhamu spoke to the Zee group to postpone the release of GADAR-EK PREM KATHA by one week, so that the clash with LAGAAN is averted. "It will benefit both the films, but they (the Zee group) are in no mood to shift from June 15," Jhamu tells me. Await the clash of the titans!

Ash spells trouble!
Here is one reason why Ash apparently doesn't top the favourites list in Tinsel town. Apparently, Aishwarya quoted a sky-high price to Feroz Khan to do his film, which left him reeling. She reportedly even tried to juggle the dates of her films. A fed up Feroz chose to go looking for another heroine, instead.

Shahrukh's off-camera problems
Shahrukh Khan has been finding interesting ways to keep himself in the news these days. His only film after Mohabattein, One Two Ka Four, wasn't a huge success, partly due to the fact that it was delayed because of the earthquake. This time he has hurt himself in the making of Devdaas (directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali). for this particular scene he was supposed to act drunk, and he accomplished this by actually getting drunk; which resulted in an injury. A more surprising news is that he has recently been interrogated by the police in connection to the Bharat shah case. Also, he has found himself in a jam over his huge estate in Bandra. A notice had been served by the Mumbai Suburban District, for the recovery of 3 crores. Maybe Shahrukh will wish to keep a low profile after all of this.
