Kamal Haasan
If there’s a unique, unexplored role somewhere in Indian cinema, chances are that Kamal Haasan the actor has done it! Be it a woman (Avvai Shanmugi), a retarded village bumpkin (Pathinaaru Vayathinile), an old man (Indian), quadruplets (Michael Madana Kamarajan), a mentally challenged person (Guna), seven roles (Ellam Inba Mayam), a man with panophobia (Tenali), the hero of a full-length silent movie (Pesum Padam), a patriot (Hey Ram), a psychopath murderer (Sigappu Rojakkal), a midget (Apoorva Sahodarargal), dual role of good guy and psychotic killer (Alavandan)...the actor has done them all.Kamal began his career as child artiste (Kalathur Kannamma). His forthcoming film is 'Pammal K Sambandam.

After many movies and rigorous training, he emerged as a dancer, assistant director, dance director and story writer. Soon, he joined the Film Institute and equipped himself better, before re-entering the film industry as an assistant dance director. Director K Balachander gave Kamal his big break as a hero in Apoorva Raagangal and from then the actor grew steadily to emerge a ‘Romantic Hero’ (‘Kaadhal Ilavarasan’).After 40 years in the film industry and over 168 films to his credit, the actor still continues to experiment with the medium.

He has won the President’s Gold Medal, the National Award (thrice), Tamil Nadu State Award (thrice), Andhra Pradesh State Award (twice) and the Film Fan Award for the best actor.Blessed with a good voice, he has sung his own songs in many movies. A perfectionist, Kamal researches, reads, writes screenplays and attempts the unusual. He is married to Sarika (a Hindi actress herself) and has two lovely daughters (Shruti and Akshaya). Shruti is an aspiring playback singer.

With hope, to the Oscars
If one is to go by the verdict of Indian audiences, 'Lagaan' should have no trouble sweeping the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. But the slip between the cup and the lip in this case, is very probable. This is because Oscars are usually the result of skilful lobbying, and Aamir Khan, however astute he is, disdains such efforts. Also, the Academy is very much predisposed towards European and Latin American films. Completely ignorant of cricket, the jury may find it hard to relate to all 220 minutes of this tribute to the underdog. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and as of today, 'Lagaan' does have a fighting chance. What makes it more creditable is that it made it as unanimous choice as India's entry, past others like 'Zubeidaa', 'Monsoon Wedding', and of course, the unfortunate 'Asoka'.

Hema Wants to Star in Film With Dharmendra And Esha
The Deol family is the only one in filmdom to boast of three production houses. Dharmendra started his home production unit with 'Betaab' for son Sunny Deol. Wife Hema Malini started her production company with a film titled 'Sharara' that featured her in a double role. And now Sunny Deol has hoisted the flag with 'Indian'.

Sunny, has in the past, expressed his desire to make a film which would star Dharmendra, brother Bobby and himself. And now Hema has expressed her wish to act in a film starring Dharmendra and daughter Esha Deol. This desire was made known by Hema in Jaipur a few days ago.

Sunny reaffirmed his commitment to his dream project when he was in New Delhi recently to promote 'Indian'. When asked about the theme of the film, he said, "It would be nice if we could play family members in the film too."

Sunny hates to be labeled as a 'he man'. He says, "I have done films with so many shades. It is only that films that had me as an action hero have done better. I would love to do emotional roles and I don't even mind doing a comedy film with Govinda." But the distributors in the film trade would prefer that he stuck to action films as these guarantee their money back.

Brother Bobby, by contrast, started his career as a 'lover boy' in 'Barsaat' and later switched to action roles in films like 'Gupt' and 'Soldier. Bobby does not exactly dislike the tag of 'Angry Young Man' but maintains that he does not want to be slotted in a particular image. When asked about Sunny's idea of making a film along with him and Dharmendra, he says, "It will be an interesting project and I would love to do it."

Sunny, for his part, says that he is "not in a hurry" about his project, "I am going through the various subjects that I have come across. But I am sorry to say that not a single plot has been able to excite me. I don not want to make a film just for the sake of it. I want to make people coming to the cinema halls empathize with the film. As soon I get the right story I will go ahead."

Sush's darling Sanjay
Sushmita and Sanjay Narang are so much in love and they don't waste time or energy hiding their blossoming relationship. They are always there for each other. Like during Filhaal's music release function recently, Sanjay didn't leave Sush's side even for a moment and then while madam was busy talking to the numerous television crews, he waited patiently and with a smile only for her. Few days later, when Narang re-opened the renovated improved no-teeny boppers allowed version of his pub Three Flights Up at his multi cuisine Gordon House hotel, Sushmita was there right by his side, being a perfect hostess. And a few lucky ones even got a drink concocted by her. Wow! Now that is a perfectly heady mix of a couple.

Ajay Devgan to play Bhagat Singh
The news is finally out! No it is not Hrithik Roshan or Abhishek Bachchan but Ajay Devgan who is to play the lead in Rajkumar Santoshi's Bhagat Singh. Speaking to the press Rajkumar Santoshi said that they had zeroed in on Ajay Devgan after much thought. "There were several youngsters keen to play the title role," he said. Rajkumar Santoshi also said that Ajay Devgan suits the role to the T. Ironically, Santoshi isn't the only director to make the film on the life of the famed patriot. Sunny Deol has also announced Martyr's Day that will have younger brother Bobby Deol play Bhagat Singh while Sunny will play his best friend Chandrashekhar Azad. The film is to be directed by Guddu Dhanoa. Also to join the bandwagon is yesteryear actor Manoj Kumar who has already begun shooting his old time hit Shaheed Bhagat Singh with son Kunal Goswami in the title role. The film is to be produced and directed by Kewal Kashyap.

Rekha to replace Amitabh's show?
Kaun Banega Crorepati will be off air from December 31 and a new game show based on BBC's popular You Are The Weakest Link is to take its place. Coincidentally, Rekha is the host of the show. The game show conceptualized by Siddharth Basu is to be produced by Synergy and will have a group of strangers of whom only one will be able to take over all the money. BBC's popular game show is hosted by Annie Robinson. But Star is tight lipped about this development and CEO Sameer Nair refrained from confirming this news.

Nandita gets together with Chi Chi, David
Hero No 1 Govinda has managed a coup of sorts by getting his favourite arty actress actress Nandita Das to say yes to a David Dhawan film opposite him. Apparently, apna Chi Chi bowled over the sultry actress with his witty one-liners and managed to fix a meeting between Nandita and David. One hears that the actress has heard the story and may actually have agreed to do the role.!
