K3G spells big bucks

With not a boy wizard or an orc in sight, a Bollywood spectacular has
swarmed to number three in the British film charts, the first Bollywood
title to achieve such success.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was beaten last week only by Harry Potter and the
Philosopher's Stone and The 51st State.
According to the trade journal Screen International, it opened at 41 sites
last week, and took £473,355. Although dwarfed by Harry Potter, still
showing at 537 sites and taking £2.4m - and certain to be pushed down the
charts by the release this weekend of Lord of the Rings - it has become
easily the most successful Indian release in the UK.
"It has been very heavily promoted, and unusually widely distributed, but it
is still absolutely phenomenal," Robert Mitchell of Screen International
said.
The film, directed by Karan Johar, and produced by Yash Raj Films, is
nicknamed K3G. It is said to be the most expensive Bollywood film ever made,
with a budget of almost £5m, and overseas locations - including Kent's
Bluewater shopping centre.
The director described his film, which translates as Sometimes Happiness,
Sometimes Sorrow, as being "all about loving your parents". It is a
sentimental saga, of a family shattered by an unapproved marriage, and
eventually reunited in time for the mandatory happy ending.
The film is being promoted by a coffee table book, and an album of its 10
song soundtrack: the album of Johar's last film sold over 2m copies.
Despite recent hyping of the crossover market for Asian films, Bollywood is
no guarantee of success. Mr Mitchell noted that another Bollywood release in
the UK, Bollywood Calling, barely registered at the box office, taking just
over £3,000 last weekend.

Dalip Tahil Lands West End Lead Role
``Bollywood'' actor Dalip Tahil's dreams have come true:
the Indian movie star has landed a role in playwright Andrew Lloyd Webber's
new musical ``Bombay Dreams.''
Tahil, who has acted in over 100 films in roles ranging from a rich
industrialist to a comic villain, will play a wealthy father opposed to his
daughter's love for a man living in a slum in the musical, which will open
in London's West End in June.
``I have been playing the father kind of roles in Hindi films. Now I'll be
doing it on the London stage,'' Tahil, who played a lead role in an Indian
adaptation of Webber's ``Evita'' years ago, told Reuters.
``It is a wonderful part to play. I will be singing two songs,'' he said.
The musical, which is set in the western Indian city of Bombay, takes off on
the popular Bollywood rags-to-riches story by following the fortunes of a
young man brought up in a city slum who becomes rich.
The Indo-Western musical extravaganza, which also has some Hindi words to
lend it an authentic touch, is seen as a manifestation of the west's
newfound love affair with Indian cinema.
``The play is about people who come with hope to the city of their dreams
and make it big in life,'' Tahil said.
Some of the biggest names from Indian showbiz have been plucked for the new
musical by the maker of huge hits such as ''Cats'' and ``Phantom of the
Opera.''
Shekhar Kapur, the internationally acclaimed director of ''Bandit Queen''
and ``Elizabeth,'' is working with Webber on ''Bombay Dreams'' and ace
musician A.R. Rahman has composed music for the play.

Mohnish Behl turns to Television
Mohnish Behl will soon make debut on the small screen. The serial offered to him is a remake of the US hit series medical thriller based Chicago Hope. It also has a romantic angle to it. With practically no unusual roles for him the actor switched on to television to explore new avenues. And was pretty happy not only the role but even the price the serial makers offered.
