Indian showbiz sector booming, revenue to double by 2006: survey
Mumbai, Mar 15 (IANS) Contrary to fears of a recession, the Indian entertainment industry appears to be booming with its revenues poised to double to Rs.293 billion by 2006, a new survey reveals.
According to the survey conducted by accounting consultants Arthur Andersen, revenues from the Indian entertainment industry, comprising film, television, music, radio and live entertainment, amounted to Rs.130 billion or $2.7 billion.
Presented at Frames 2002, a two-day seminar on the entertainment industry, it noted that the industry is poised to double its revenues to Rs.293 billion by 2006 making it the fastest growing sector in the country.
The study said India's overall economic growth rate, increasing urbanisation, literacy and per capita income, benefits stemming from the spread of digitalisation would be major drivers for the growth of the entertainment industry.
"Digitalisation will lead to a vast improvement in content quality and ease of handling content, which will see consumers buying more content. It will also open up new distribution channels for content delivery such as the Internet, and enable entertainment companies to access new consumer markets, tap new sources of revenue and also enable the industry to curb piracy," the study said.
Data put out at the seminar showed the Indian film industry churned out 1,013 films in 2001.
Of the 1,013 film, a third of the movies produced each year are Hindi-language films produced by Bollywood, or studios and production companies based in Mumbai.
The remaining two-thirds were produced in other Indian languages, particularly four southern languages -- Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.
The two-day seminar organised by the Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) also saw the launch of a new initiative for the entertainment sector.
FICCI president R.S. Lodha announced the launch of a tie-up between FICCI, National Association of Services and Software Companies (NASSCOM) - the apex body of software exporters in India, and Silicon Valley-based The IndUS Entrepreneurs (TiE), which would foster the growth of the entertainment industry in the age of convergence.
TiE is an Indian American group that mentors and funds start-ups.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj inaugurated the event Friday, in the presence of many prominent political, film industry top brass and industrialists including media baron James Murdoch, who heads Star Television.

Amitabh: Three colours - Black
2002 is a very important year for Amitabh Bachchan. After his last flop Aks, he is once again seen in a negative role in Gaurang Doshi's Vipul Shah directorial Aankhen. A story about revenge and three blind guys robbing a bank is definitely a novel concept. Amitabh's character though is not entirely black but grey. Director Vipul Shah is confident about AB's character and the story. He feels Aks was too negative and was more in the realms of fantasy than a reality based theme. Though Aankhen is not a real life story, this exciting thriller has quite a lot of real elements. Aankhen will be followed by another heist drama Sanjay Gupta's Kaante and Mahesh Manjrekar's version of the Godfather titled Kutumb. With so many negative roles, it seems Amitabh has definitely started a new chapter in his career.

High hopes for Aftaab with Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai
Aftaab was looking very positive at the launch party of Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai held recently at the elegant J.W.Marriot hotel in Mumbai. Aftaaf made sure that he gave interviews to every reporter present there, in a way it was good to see that everyone was pleased to get a share of him as most of the stars normally show lot of attitude and run away after the movie is launched.
Cast opposite his childhood friend Amisha Patel, the film is Aftaab's second release this year--a film in which he plays the role of a love struck college boy. After the debacle of Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche at the box office, the success of this film is rather critical for Aftaab.
“This film is very important to me. I have been able to do a lot of things that I haven’t done before. Its got great songs, great music and great picturisation, so I just hope that it works,” said Aftaab Shivdasani.

Will Company bring trouble?
The much hyped movie Company has already getting rave reviews before its release date. But one really wonders what effect the movie will have on the junta of India who are not very receptive to controversial stories. In the past we have seen the crowds reacting in a negative manner to films covering sensitive issues. The country is already under deep pressure because of the Ayodhya problem as the communal tension is rising. Company a movie about the mechanics of underworld comes at a very wrong time.
Will it create more problems when it hits the cinema halls is a serious issue to be addressed by the makers of Company. We hope that nothing of that sort happens as audience need to understand the difference between fiction and reality.

Expensive title song of Aankhen
Rumour : Confidential sources inform us that you are in the process of adding another song to your film, AANKHEN. We are told that the fast-paced number, which has been given a slick and techno-savvy look, will be shot with a record number of dancers participating in it and will be amongst the highlights of the film. We are told that the song is being added in keeping with the fact that the film will be premiered at the prestigious I.I.F.A. Awards, to be held in Malaysia. How far is it true?
Gaurang Doshi : The news is not entirely true. We are indeed shooting a song with 32 dancers, which is being picturised on Amit-ji. But the song is the title track of the film, which we had deliberately held back to shoot in the end. It is being choreographed by Remo Fernandes and cinematographer Ashok Mehta will be playing with a record number of lights in the song. The song is unique and it is also being shot in a unique way.

Nana project on hold
Rumour : There is talk in distribution circles that you have signed Aziz Sajawal to direct your next film, which is scheduled to go on the floors shortly. Does that mean that the film you were planning with Nana Patekar as director has been put on hold?
Dilip Dhanwani : It's true that Aziz Sajawal will be directing it. The film is a three-hero, three-heroine subject, which will be launched in March. But that does not mean that I have dropped the idea of the film with Nana Patekar as director. The project is very much in the planning stages and it will happen at a suitable time.
