Elite commandoes of the topline security forces from army, navy, NSG and Rapid Action Force were involved in the raging encounter with unspecified number of heavily-armed terrorists in Taj and Trident (Oberoi) hotels where throughout the day grenade explosions have set various floors on fire.
As dusk fell, there was expectation that the forces would intensify their assault to overwhelm the terrorists. About 20 to 25 of them were believed to have come in three small inflatable boats, whose mother ship has been traced by Indian naval ships patrolling the Arabian Sea.
In all, 101 people including nine foreigners and 14 policemen have lost their lives while about 300 people were injured in the worst terror attacks seen in the country in which desperate men fired indiscriminately at people. PTI

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which confirmed reports of Australians being injured, however provided no further details.
"The situation remains fluid and the exact number of casualties remains unclear," it said, adding the Australian government was very concerned about the attacks.

"Australians should avoid travel to Mumbai at this time. Australians in Mumbai should remain in a safe location and follow the advice of local authorities," the advisory said.
Crean also asked Australians in Mumbai to remain in safe places and follow the advice of local authorities.
"(India) is a very successful economy and to see these criminals trying to disrupt that in a mad destructive way is tragic and our hearts go out to the people of Mumbai, to all people who have been hurt, to the Australians who were there but also to the whole of India," Crean said.

Indian community in US condemns Mumbai terror attacks
Dharam Shourie
New York, Nov 27 (PTI) Denouncing as "cowardly" and "heartless acts" the deadly terror strikes in Mumbai, the Indian community in the US today said it was an attack on the pluralistic fabric of India and sought strong measures to fight terrorism.
Expressing "shock" at the attacks that claimed at least 80 lives, Chairman of American Indians for Democracy, Sant Singh Chatwal, said they were apparently aimed at frightening the foreign investors from going to India in general and the financial capital in particular.
Irrespective of the terror group involved, the aim, he said, was to strike the progress that the country is making and to create panic among investors.
Chatwal said Taj and Oberoi, the hotels that were attacked, were among those generally recommended to foreigners going to India.
Calling for strong measures, he said it is time for the international community to put its act together to fight terrorism as it could happen anywhere. The Indian community, he said, is prepared to do whatever is required of it to stop terrorism.
Strongly condemning the "heartless acts" of terrorism, the Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC) called on the government to deal firmly with terrorists, their sponsors and financiers. PTI

Inflation falls to 8.84 pc, RBI may signal cut in rates
New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI) Continuing the declining trend, inflation fell for the third consecutive week to over a five-month low of 8.84 per cent, providing room to RBI to signal cut in interest rates to spur economic growth amid fears of moderation.
Inflation fell by 0.06 percentage points, during the week ended November 15, from 8.90 per cent a week ago, even as many food and manufactured product prices rose.
However, some manufactured products such as imported edible oils, rubber, metals like iron and steel, and some primary food articles like fruits, sea-fish and tea turned cheaper, while fuel products' prices remained unchanged.
The decline in inflation may prompt RBI to cut policy rates or reserve ratios as demanded by bankers to enable them to cut interest rates to give a fillip to growth rates.
The data for economic growth during the second quarter of this fiscal is slated for tomorrow amid fears of slowdown.
Today, leading housing finance firm HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh ruled out cut in interest rates unless the cost of funds declines further. "The cost of funds is still high, so once it comes down, we will reduce interest rates," he said.
Earlier, ICICI Bank CEO and MD K V Kamath had demanded that the RBI should ease money supply further to enable cut in interest rates by 200-300 basis points.
"The RBI now has enough room for a rate cut. Within this calendar year, I expect a 50 basis point cut in the repo rate and reserve repo rate. The slashing of the CRR will depend on how the liquidity situation emerges in the coming days," Crisil Principal Economist D K Joshi said.
Some economists also described the fall in inflation as still higher than expectation.
"It is slightly higher than our expectation but it could reach 7-7.5 per cent by the end of January," said HDFC Bank Chief Economist Abheek Barua. PTI

An NCDEX spokesperson said that the exchange would be shut today following the attacks. PTI

Expiry in the F&O and all settlements stand postponed to the next working day, he added.
At least 80 persons have been killed and over 250 injured in the explosions and gunfire by terrorists at several locations in the metropolis since last night.
Five-star hotels in the business district and Mumbai CST railway station have been among the targets. PTI
32 FDI proposals worth Rs 845 cr cleared
New Delhi, Nov 26 (PTI) The government today cleared 32 proposals that will bring in Rs 845.70 crore into the country, which included permitting Raghav Bahl-promoted Television Eighteen India to launch three regional business news channels.
However, a proposal by the US-based Dow Jones & Company to set up a wholly-owned subsidiary to carry out publishing of fascimile editions of newspapers was deferred.
A proposal by real estate developer Ansal Properties and Infrastructure Ltd to increase the cap on FIIs holding to 49 per cent from 24 per cent was withdrawn from the agenda.
The proposals cleared by Finance Minister P Chidambaram on the recommendations of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) includes Oriental Structural Engineers Ltd's plan to set up a holding company, which would attract highest FDI of Rs 450 crore.
Public sector major Oil India's proposal was also approved by the Finance Minister, which included conversion of operating company into an operating-cum-holding company and IPO issue.
However, the amount of FDI is not indicated in the proposal, an official release here said.
Television Eighteen has proposed to launch CNBC TV18 South, CNBC TV18 Gujarati and CNBC TV18 Channel 3 without any fresh inflow of FDI.
Currently, it operates business news channels like CNBC TV18 (English) and CNBC Awaaz (Hindi).
German foods brand Dr. Oetker India would bring in Rs 110.40 crore to make further downstream investment.
The S Kumars group company Reid & Taylor's proposal to allot and issue equity share warrants was also cleared paving the way for FDI flow of Rs 108.33 crore.
Three proposals of Nagarjuna Construction Ltd, Inuit US Holdings Inc and Delight Investments Pte Ltd of Singapore have been rejected. PTI
RBI may cut policy rates up to 50 bps
New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI) The Reserve Bank may announce cut in policy rates up to 50 basis points soon as inflation has been on way downward for past three successive weeks, bankers said.
Given the softening of global commodity prices and crude oil, there is room for reduction in benchmark interest rates, Union Bank of India Chairman and Managing Director M V Nair said.
Private sector lender HDFC Bank's Treasury Head Sudhir Joshi said RBI has scope to slash rates. The apex bank could cut short-term lending (repo) rate in between 25-50 basis points.
What is fuelling anticipation of rate cut by the RBI is inflation declining for the third straight week. The rate of price rise is at six-month low of 8.84 per cent for the week ended November 15 against 8.9 per cent in the previous week.
RBI has already shifted its focus from price management to growth as commodity and fuel prices have come down substantially in the last one month.
The decline in inflation may prompt RBI to cut policy rates or reserve ratios as demanded by bankers to enable them to cut interest rates to give a fillip to growth rates.
Analysts feel that lowering of interest rates would also boost economic and business confidence.
PTI
Film industry in shock over Mumbai terror strikes
Mumbai, Nov 27 (PTI) The Indian film industry today expressed a deep shock over the nightmare that unfolded on Wednesday night as terrorists targeted various important locations in the Bollywood capital of Mumbai.
The industry people also appealed for sanity and called for unity after one of the biggest terrorist strikes rattled the country's financial and dream city.
"Terrible! terrible situation!," a shaken Amitabh Bachchan wrote in his blog.
"Mumbai under terrorist attack!! Several locations bombed and terrorist firing all over the city. Major hotels under siege. Taj hotel battle going on inside the hotel," says Bachachan, whose post reads like a doomsday account.
In one of the most audacious terror attacks in Indian history, at least 100 people have been killed and nearly 300 injured.
Two five star hotels, hospitals and the city's CST Railway station were among the key targets of the terrorists, who entered the city through boats at Gateway of India, just opposite the heritage Taj hotel.
"I am scared! shocked! I don't have words to describe my feelings. It seems unreal to me almost like a film. I don't know who are they and why they have resorted to such ruthlessness," film director Anurag Kashyap, who is in Goa to attend the IFFI told PTI over phone.
"They just enter the city like that and hold it hostage. It is unbelievable. Obviously Mumbai will bounce back but it has been hurt badly and it will take time to heal," says Kashyap, who has directed films like 'Black Friday' based on the 1993 terror strike and the ensuing riots. PTI

Poll takes a backseat, fear grips national capital
New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI) After a night of terror in Mumbai where terrorists targeted ten places gunning down over 100 people, Delhi woke up with terrifying memories of the recent blasts in the capital, the heat generated by the polls giving way to fear and caution.
With newspaper headlines screaming with news of the attacks and television channels showing minute by minute coverage of the encounter between terrorists and security personnel along with live footage, people began calling up friends and relatives based in the financial capital.
"Please now stop all the regional and religion differences. I am not concerned about which party wins. But will they be able to give us security? These politicians make such a lot of hue and cry if their 'Z' security cordon is withdrawn. Where is the security to the common man?" asks Ramsh Lal, a retired government official.
Till yesterday, the talk on the street centered around the upcoming elections. The moods debating and comparing various candidates today changed to sombre with almost everybody talking about the Mumbai attack.
"We are very sure that despite attacks like this the situation is not going to change with all the political parties blaming each other for the security lapses. We need a man with iron face to improve situations," says Rajesh Kumar, a private bank employee while traveling in the city's metro train. PTI
Security in hospitality sector needs to be upgraded: Experts
New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI) A guest, in the hospitality industry, is treated like God, seldom subjected to frisking or scanning of luggage. This leaves hotels open to attacks like the ones in Mumbai, say experts.
A sector, known to be the most delicate and service-offering, hotels are increasingly become soft targets due to their diverse clientele.
The security experts have sought an upgradation of security measures in the elite hotel industry on par with other international 'check-in' venues.
"Like airports, where a tourist has to undergo checks through X-ray scanners and other surveillance methods, the hotel industry needs to implement all these hi-tech techniques to avoid future attacks," says Retired Brigadier Virendra Kumar.
Today's terror attacks in two luxury hotels - The Taj and the Trident (formerly the Oberoi) apart from other places like bus stations and hospitals left over 100 dead and more than 300 injured.
Kumar, who had served as a security expert with the Indian Army described the attacks as extremely shocking and bold and said it called for a shake up of the entire intelligence setup.
"In hotels, nobody cares about the visitors. A proper security system should be implemented as such these places are frequently visited by foreign tourists." PTI
Hotels world over a soft target for terrorists
New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI) Attacks on two luxury hotels -The Taj and Trident- in the country's financial capital Mumbai have drawn attention again to the fact that hotels are a soft target for terrorists who want to capture world attention to their causes.
The Mumbai incident follows previous attempts on hotels elsewhere in the world, one such incident in the recent past in Islamabad where a deadly blast targeted the Marriott hotel near Pakistan's Parliament, killing at least 40 people and wounded another 200.
In 2005 in Jordan, Al Qaeda conducted a series of coordinated bombing on three hotels in the capital city Amman on November 9. The blasts at at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, the Radisson SAS Hotel, and the Days Inn killed 60 people and injured 115 others. Oen of the hotels was hosting a wedding with hundreds of guests.
In October 2004, bombings at three sites on the east coast of the Sinai peninsula killed 34 people. The Egyptian government said the mastermind was Palestinian and the targets appeared to be Israeli tourists.
On August 5, 2003, a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb outside the lobby of the JW Marriott Hotel in Indonesian capital Jakarta killing 12 people, including one Danish, one Dutch and two Chinese and injuring 150. The hotel was viewed as a symbol of Western power and thus been the prime focus of terrorists.
Another reason why hotels are being targeted is because of the kind of clientele, experts say.
Mumbai being the financial capital of the country at the centre of economic decision making there are numerous important delegates checking into one of the seven or five star hotels in the city. PTI
Public libraries are passe, online portals catching up
Sayantani De
New Delhi, Nov 26 (PTI) Gone are the days when serpentine queues, bespectacled librarian and shabby interiors were the prelude to a reading experience. The computer-savvy bibliophiles of the capital have some reasons to cheer as the city is catching up fast with the latest trend of online libraries.
Though only two Delhi-based web portals currently offer the avid book lovers a chance to romance with their favourite characters, the idea is fast gaining a strong foothold fast, according to owners.
"We have more than 500 members and stock of over 10,000 books. On an average, we deal with 10 to 15 books per day, which is expected to increase in future," Nidhi Verma of www.Bookmeabook.Com, which celebrated its first anniversary in October this year, told PTI.
At a time when public libraries are lacking good stocks to attract readers, this new medium has the potential to make up the gap with lucrative collection and easy availability, the owners believe.
"Most of the libraries in Delhi don't have a good stock. So if you are searching for a book, more often than not you wont find them, even in the Delhi Public Library," Arti Jain, one of the two founder members of www.Friendsofbooks.Com points out.
"The market is quite vast and there is a lot of room to create your own set of readers," she adds.
Officials of public libraries too admit that emergence of web-based bookshelves have taken the wind away from their sails, despite several revamp measures. PTI
