Relief operations stepped up, food riots continue
Bhubaneswar,Wednesday, November 03, 1999: Rescue and relief operation in cyclone ravaged Orissa were stepped up amidst reports of food riots and vandalism in many areas of the ten affected districts.
"The biggest challenge before the authorities now is to deal with increasing instances of lawlessness and vandalism," State Revenue Minister Jagannath Patnaik said on Tuesday as desperate people looted food from thousands of trucks stranded on National Highway-5 in Balasore.
Patnaik confirmed nearly 250 deaths so far but the officials monitoring the rescue operations said the figure might go up to 5,000.
With improvement in weather, huge quantities of food packets were airdropped by relief teams of armed forces while the railways moved in at least 1,000 tonnes of drinking water and medicines for the affected people.
Two navy ships entered Paradip port and off-loaded relief material and set up medical camps.
Under 'Operation Sahayata', the army provided drinking water to over 70,000 people in 74 villages of the worst-affected Balasore district.
The 132 KV power line at Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri was restored. Communication links between the state capital and Khurda, Nayagaon, Berhampur, Koraput, Baripada, Dhenkanal and Talcher were also put in place, according to an official statement.

Sena leaders held in late night swoop
Mumbai: In a major crackdown on the eve of the Papal visit, police
arrested top leaders of the Shiv Sena including its northern India
chief Jai Bhagwan Goyal in raids across the capital late last night.
According to sources, besides Goyal, the police arrested Om Dutt
Sharma, the party's state vice-president, Ravinder Kumar Bedi,
propaganda secretary and Ramakant Sharma, a state executive member.
The detentions were described by top police officials as "preventive"
and may continue till the Pope leaves the country. The police action
follows a protest demonstration by the Sainiks yesterday against the
Papal visit and alleged conversions carried out by Christian
missionaries. The activists led by Goyal had set fire to an effigy of
'conversions'. The Sena had earlier threatened to stage demonstrations
against Pope John Paul II during his visit beginning 5 November if he
did not apologise for alleged atrocities committed on Hindus by the
church during the Portuguese rule in Goa, Vasai, Kerala and other
places.

NCCI wants categorical assurance from PM on Papal visit
Nagpur: The National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) has demanded
a categorical assurance from Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and
home minister L K Advani on creating a cordial atmosphere for Pope
John Paul II's visit to Delhi from November 5. Even though the
external affairs ministry had come out with an assurance to this
effect, the BJP leaders in their individual capacities are continuing
to unleash a hatred campaign against the pontiff, NCCI president Dr K
Rajratnam told a press conference. Accusing the NDA-led ruling
combination at the Centre of double-speak, Rajratnam asserted that
despite emphatic promises on the floor of the Lok Sabha, the Hindu
fundamentalist outfits were bent upon carrying out malicious
agitational plans including anti-Pope rallies and proposed
demonstrations, he lamented.

Benchmark tumbles at midsession on selling
Mumbai,Wednesday, November 03, 1999: The Benchmark 30-share index tumbled following a sharp setback in economy stocks at the midsession on the stock market here today.
Even heavyweighted infotech stocks like Infosys Tech and NIIT fell substantially due to a sudden spurt in selling pressure, triggered by liquidation on the Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) ahead of end of account tomorrow.
The high badla of about 55 per cent on the CSE last week was still fresh in the memory of operators and they preferred to be cautious this time, dealers said.
Economy stocks like Tisco, Telco, SBI, RIL, MTNL, BHEL and some others showed sharp falls at the midsession due to selling pressure.
The BSE Sensitive Index, which had moved further upwards to 4536.20 at the initial stages, later dropped to a low of 4382.95 before being quoted at 4413.02 at 1300 hrs as against Tuesday's close of 4491.56.
