11 Cong MLAs quit, Faleiro ministry in minority
Panaji,Friday, November 19, 1999: Goa was plunged into a
political crisis today as 11 ruling Congress MLAs, including
Deputy Speaker and four ministers, resigned reducing the
Luizinho Faleiro ministry to a minority, barely five months
after it was formed, and raising prospects of a BJP-backed
alternative.
BJP, with 10 members in the 40-member state assembly, lost
no time in announcing its support to efforts in formation
of an alternative government, while the Congress charged it
with playing a destabilising game.
Given the claim of the breakaway Congress group led by
Health minister Francis Sardhina, BJP support will give
them a majority in the house.
But Transport Minister Somnath Zuwarker, who announced the
resignations to reporters here, did not spell out their
future course of action and there was no word till late
tonight from the Raj Bhawan on asking the Chief Minister to
seek a vote of confidence.Zuwarker said the 11 MLAs
had given a separate letter to Speaker Pratapsinh Rane
claiming a split in the state unit of Congress.
The Chief Minister, when contacted, declined to make any
comment saying the situation was still fluid. Zuwarker said
all the 11 MLAs had met Governor Lt Gen (Retd) J F R Jacob
and handed over to him a letter of resignation signed by
them.

SPG cover for Sonia, children extended
New Delhi,Friday, November 19, 1999: The elite Special
Protection Group (SPG) Security cover for Congress
president Sonia Gandhi and her two children, elapsing on
December first, was further extended today by a
Presidential ordinance.
The SPG cover for Gandhi and her two children - Rahul and
Priyanka - would continue on the basis of assessment of
threat perception by the Centre, a senior Home Ministry
official said.
The ordinance said the period between two consecutive
assessments of level of threats should not be more than 12
months.
This was done through an amendment to SPG Act, 1988, which
would be ratified by Parliament during the winter session. Top
Sharif denies charges, remanded to police custody till Monday
Islamabad,Friday, November 19, 1999: Pakistan's deposed
Premier Nawaz Sharif today denied charges of treason,
attempted murder and hijacking levelled against him by the
military regime while appearing before a special court in
Karachi which remanded him to three days' police custody.
Sharif, who made his first public appearance since the
October 12 coup amidst tight security, told judge Rehman
Hussain Jaffrey of anti-terrorism court that he was not
aware of the charges during over a month-long detention
and had nothing to do with those charges, according to
court officials present during the proceedings.
He, however, said that he had not been tortured during his
detention. "I have had everything but tortured", he said
but complained that he had not been given any facility
including access to television, newspapers and was even not
allowed to meet his lawyer.
Sharif also told the court that no police official contacted
him during his detention for questioning on the charges.
After the 40-minute in-camera proceedings, Sharif, along
with four other accused in the hijacking case, was sent to
police custody till November 22.
The other accused are Sharif's former Adviser on Sindh
Affairs Ghaus Ali Shah, former PIA Chairman Shahid Khaqan
Abbasi, former Director General of Civil Aviation Aminullah
Choudhury and former Inspector General of Police of Sindh
Rana Maqbool.
The judge ordered filing of charges against Sharif by
November 26. Top
UN to cash in on cricket popularity
New Delhi,Friday, November 19, 1999: The United Nations and
the International Cricket Council have announced a
collaboration to utilise the popularity cricket to give
fillip to various worldwide projects undertaken by the UN.
For the first time, the UN will use cricket and its stars
as the medium for its promotion work as it has been doing
successfully through disciplines like football and tennis.
Shashi Tharoor, Director, Communications and Projects in
the UN Secretary General's office, and ICC President
Jagmohan Dalmiya said on Thursday that the understanding
was forged as both the bodies shared common concern for
abolishing apartheid, promoting peace and development
through "playing by the rules".
Dalmiya announced that a specific programme was being
chalked out by roping in past and present stars and hinted
that even a combined side of Indian and Pakistan players
could turn out for a match during the first edition of the
"World Cricket Week" that will be observed from April 2 to
9, 2000.
The ICC, which had 56 affiliated members including the nine
Test playing nations, had embarked on a globalisation
programme to broaden the game's base and cricket had
immense potential to end confrontations, the basic
endeavour of UN.
Tharoor said UN was veering towards the idea that sport was
an effective vehicle to project UNICEF and UNDP schemes.
"The Olympics and the soccer World Cup have embraced the
values for which UN stands by flying its flag in their
games. Hopefully this will happen in the next cricket world
cup and in next year's world conference against racism,
cricket will be held out as a prime example," Tharoor said. Top

Board decides to send Jadeja to S.Africa
Mumbai,Friday, November 19, 1999: In a volte face, the
Indian cricket board has decided to send the injured middle
order batsman Ajay Jadeja to South Africa for treatment,
according to its secretary Jaywant Lele.
Lele said from Baroda over phone that the board has decided
to send Jadeja to South Africa for treatment on his right
shoulder by specialist Mark Ferguson.
"If Ferguson says the injury is not of serious nature then
Jadeja will join the Indian team in Australia a week later
and if his injury turns out to be serious then we will
announce a replacement," he added.
"The board has asked Jadeja to leave for treatment as early
as possible and we might get a clear picture within a day
or two. Now it is entirely his (Jadeja) decision to decide
when to go," Lele said.
Lele had said on Thursday that the board thought there was
no need for Jadeja to go to South Africa for treatment as a
month's rest would heal the shoulder injury. Top
