PM holds high level meet to review Indo-Pak border situation
New Delhi,Thursday, May 30, 2002: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today reviewed the situation along the Indo-Pak border at a high-level meeting with Home Minister L K Advani, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and Defence Minister George Fernandes.

"Various issues were discussed ... not just the military situation," Singh told reporters after the nearly two-hour long meeting held at the Prime Minister's residence, when asked if it took stock of the situation arising out of Pakistani troops indulging in artillery and mortar shelling in Jammu and Kashmir.

Asked if it was a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), he said Vajpayee had asked them to come over for a discussion on various issues.

To a question, Singh said there was no change in the tour programme of the Prime Minister, who is scheduled to leave for Almaty on June two for the two-day Conference and Interaction on Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

"Almaty is on ... of course he (Vajpayee) is going there," he added.

Two Dead in Fresh Religious Clashes in Gujarat
Two people were killed and 12 wounded in overnight Hindu-Muslim clashes in India's riot-racked western state of Gujarat, police said on Thursday.

The violence followed three bomb explosions on buses earlier in the day in Ahmedabad, Gujarat's largest city, in which 11 people were injured.

Police said a Muslim bus conductor was burned alive by a Hindu mob of about 1,500 in Kadi, southwest of Ahmedabad, after a Hindu man was killed in a bomb blast there.

They said 12 people, including four policemen, were injured in the industrial city of Baroda, south of Ahmedabad, on Wednesday night.

Almost a thousand people, mostly Muslims, have died in Gujarat in some of India's worst religious violence since independence in 1947.

Pak troops open fire along IB, LoC
Jammu,Thursday, May 30, 2002: Pakistani troops opened artillery and mortar shelling in various sectors in Jammu and Kashmir resulting in death of an army jawan and injuries to two others resulting in another set of migration from bordering villages, a Defence spokesman said today. Pakistani troops targeted several forward areas in Kargil, Drass and Batalik in Ladakh region with artillery shells from 1600 hours yesterday to 0600 hours today, he said.

Heavy exchange of mortar fire between two sides took place along LoC in Poonch, Akhnoor, Sunderbani sectors of Jammu division, he said adding one army jawan lost his life and two were wounded in Poonch sector.

Indian troops retaliated the fire effectively, he said.

Exchange of small arms fire took place along the LoC in Kupwara in Kashmir valley and along international border in Palanwala, Kanachak, R S Pura, Arnia, Ramgarh, Samba and Katua sectors in Jammu during the period.

Scared villagers of Poonch and Suchetgarh areas have taken shelter in safer places.

A control room has been established in the office of Director, Food and Supplies, Jammu to ensure better supply of essential commodities to the border migrants.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah accompanied by Minister of State for External Affairs Omar Abdullah visited the Poonch town this morning. The two held meetings with the local administration and local army units and directed them to ensure speedy relief measures.

Defiant Pakistan threatens to use nuke
United Nations,Thursday, May 30, 2002: Pakistan has threatened to use nuclear weapons even if India stuck to conventional arms in any conflict, asserting that it has never subscribed to "no-first-use" of atomic weapons and that ruling out their use would give New Delhi a "license to kill." "India should not have the license to kill with conventional weapons while Pakistan's hands are tied regarding other means to defend itself," said its new ambassador to the United Nations Munir Akram.

The highly bellicose and provocative statements by Akram on the second day on the job Wednesday surprised diplomats and officials at the United Nations who declined to make an immediate comment.

Pakistan, he said, has to rely on the "means it possessed to deter Indian aggression" and would not "neutralise" that deterrence by any doctrine of "no-first-use."

To a question at his first news conference after taking over the job, Akram said any action by India across the border, any aerial attack on Pakistani territory and its assets, and any action to economically strangle it would be "viewed" as aggression and would be "responded to by Pakistan."

Noting that both India and Pakistan possessed nuclear weapons, he said while that should instill restraint on both sides, "it does not seem to do so on the Indian side".

U.S. Plans Airlift From India, Pakistan -Paper
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government is drawing up plans for a mass evacuation of some 64,000 Americans from India and Pakistan as tensions escalate between the two nuclear foes over disputed Kashmir, USA Today reported on Thursday.

A U.S. government team is in India working on a contingency plan to evacuate 1,100 U.S. troops on three bases in Pakistan and up to 63,000 U.S. citizens in both countries, the newspaper reported.

A State Department spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage will visit India and Pakistan on June 6 and 7 on a mission to attempt to defuse the crisis, which threatens to disrupt the U.S. military campaign against remnants of the Taliban and al Qaeda in western Pakistan and nearby Afghanistan.

U.S. networks ABC and NBC reported on Wednesday that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld also might be dispatched to the region to try to head off a war.

The White House referred questions on the reports to the Pentagon, where a spokesman said he had no information on a possible visit by Rumsfeld to South Asia.

Power cut brings 3-hour nightmare
For the second time in a week, Mumbaiites were forced to come up with creative solutions to beat the sweltering heat. This time though, the 400 kilowatt Padghe-Lonikhand power station chose the unearthly hour of 2 am to trip. Shyam Sundar, a resident of Dombivli, says at first he thought it was a bad dream. Only, it wasn’t. ‘‘I was all sweaty when I was jolted out of my sleep. I was all shaky and I thought it was a bad dream before I realised that there was no electricity,’’ he says, shuddering at memories of the wee hours, when the power failure left the city and suburbs in a sweat for three hours.

The power failure was caused by a technical fault on the Padghe-Lonikhand 400 kilowatt line, affecting Western Maharashtra including Mumbai and parts of Marathwada. According to the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB), ‘‘The power failure had a cascading effect on the Bhableshwar-Padghe and Koradi-Bhusaval 400 KV lines, which also tripped due to overloading. This affected power generation units on the Chandrapur-Khoradi-Parali-Nashik lines.’’ He said the MSEB may resort to load-shedding in some parts of the state to divert power to the Padge-Lonikhand line.

Tata Power Company (TPC), which supplies the bulk of power to the city and suburbs, said the grid fault isolated Mumbai’s unique islanding system from the rest of the grid and thereby they were able to continue supply to the railways and emergency services.

The sudden drop in frequency also affected both the Bombay Suburban Electric Supply’s 250 MW generation units at Dahanu, which resulted in a power shutdown in North Mumbai. ‘‘Tata Power stepped up its hydro and thermal generation and assisted the BSES to resume its supply lines. While TPC resumed supply to all its consumers by 3 am, BSES units were able to resume supply only by 5.45 am.

Suzuki Motor Corp gains control of Maruti
New Delhi,Thursday, May 30, 2002: Suzuki Motor Corp of Japan today gained control of the biggest automaker in India, Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL). Osamu Suzuki, Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corp, presented a cheque of Rs 10 bn to Suresh Prabhu, Minister for Power and Minister-in-charge of Heavy Industries, to gain control of MUL.

The payment of 'control premium' is the first step in the convoluted process of privatising the automaker which holds 59 per cent market share.

Suzuki paid Rs 4 bn to buy 1.2 million newly issued Maruti shares for Rs 3,280 per share, that would take its shareholding to 54.2 per cent and dilute the Government's holding to 45.54 per cent from present 49.7 per cent.

In the second step to disinvestment, the government would offload a 20 per cent stake through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) of shares this fiscal to exit the venture entirely by March 2004.

Reckitt, Toyota among 53 FDI proposals cleared
New Delhi,Thursday, May 30, 2002: Reckitt Benckiser's Rs 4.03 billion proposal and Japanese automobile company Toyota's Rs 3.04 billion investment are among the 53 foreign direct investment (FDI) cases worth Rs 9.57 billion cleared by the government today. Reckitt proposes to increase foreign equity in its Indian arm from 49 per cent to 100 per cent, investing Rs 4.03 billion for setting up a 'centre of excellence' for marketing brand development and other initiatives, an official release said.

Toyota intends to invest Rs 3.0375 billion for picking up 90 per cent equity in a joint venture with Toyota Kirlosker for automobile parts.

HC rejects bail plea of two top executives of Karsan
New Delhi,Thursday, May 30, 2002: The Delhi High Court today rejected the fresh bail petition of two top executives of the Turkish firm Karsan in the Rs 1.33 bn Urea scam. The Court also dismissed the petition by Karsan executives Tubkay Alankus and Cihankaranci and Brazilian national A E Pinto for separate trial of the case, saying there was no merit in their petition.

Rejecting the bail petition of Alankus and Cihankaranci, Justice S K Agrawal directed the trial court to expedite the trial within six months by holding day-to-day proceedings.

Pinto, however, had not filed any bail application.

The three foreigners accused in the case had sought separate trial on the ground that they had been extradited under Extradition Act. They contended that the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act could not be attracted against them and therefore they could not be tried along with the other accused in the case.

Besides the three foreigners, CBI had chargesheeted six others in the case, including two former executives of National Fertilisers Limited (NFL), C K Ramakrishnan and D S Kanwar, Karsan's Indian agent Sambasiva Rao and Prakash Yadav, son of former Union Fertilizer Minister Ramlakhan Singh Yadav.

India register easy win, go 1-0 up in the series
Bridgetown (Barbados),Thursday, May 30, 2002: Helped by sterling performances from some of the fresh faces, India carved out an easy and comprehensive seven-wicket victory in the third one-day international over West Indies here to go 1-0 up in the rain-affected five-match series. Neither the disappointment of losing the Test series nor their dismal track record at the venue seemed to affect the Indians who produced a fine all-round performance to register their first win, in either form of the game, at the Kensington Oval here Wednesday.

And the men mainly responsible for the victory were the only two not to get a game despite being in the squad for the Test series - left-handed batsman Dinesh Mongia and speedster Tinu Yohannan.

Yohannan claimed three important wickets for 33 runs in his debut one-day match as West Indies were bundled out for 186 in 44.5 overs after being put in to bat by Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly. Ajit Agarkar, with three for 36, and Virender Sehwag, who took two for 23 runs, also played their part.

For West Indies, only skipper Carl Hooper, who remained unbeaten on 76, and Ramnaresh Sarwan (44) made significant contributions, the two adding 87 for the fourth wicket after they had been reduced to 53 for three in the 16th over.

And when India came out to bat, Mongia shone with a fluent 74, his second highest score in one-dayers, as he guided his side to victory in 43.5 overs. Mongia was later declared man of the match for his effort.
