Four more Indian doctors being questioned in Australia
Melbourne, Jul 6 (PTI) Four more Indian doctors are being questioned by the Australian police in connection with the UK terror plots. Extending their inquiries to other states, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have executed search warrants at two western Australian hospitals namely Kalgoorlie and Royal Perth. Inquiries have now extended to a third state with investigations involving an unnamed doctor in NSW, local media reports said here. Four Indian migrant doctors have been questioned. They had all worked in the British health system and were not considered suspects and had not been charged, AFP Commissioner Mike Keelty said. Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said a number of items have been taken by police for further examination, including telephones and laptop computers. No dangerous materials have been seized, he said. WA Deputy Commissioner (Specialist Services) Murray Lampard said there was "at this point" nothing to suggest a heightened risk to the West Australian public. "The persons of interest have been cooperative and I want to emphasise that if police held information that suggested a heightened risk to the public, the public would be informed, but that is not the case on this occasion," he said. Sensex breaches 15K level on easing interest rate concerns
Mumbai, July 6 (PTI) The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex finally crossed the 15,000 points level at mid-session on easing concerns of interest rate hike by the central bank. A major support to the market came from sectors like cement, capital goods and auto, but received the final push from the information technology and communications sector. The key index was trading at 15,007.22 points at 1330 hrs. In similar manner, the second wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also set an intra-day record at 4,411 points. Buying activity was brisk, disregarding reports of inflation rate rising to 4.13 per cent in the week ended June 23 and the Bank of England hiking interest rate. The benchmark Sensex, which had been teasing brokers' sentiments by nearing the psychological 15,000 points level in intra-day trading for the last few days, was propelled past the 15K level on reports that government was planning to give a relief package to exporters battling the appreciating rupee. "The Indian market looks overvalued compared to other emerging markets, but overall it seems fairly valued," said Umesh Karne, Research Analyst, Emkay Shares and Stock Brokerage. Meanwhile, Asian markets exhibited mixed trend but showed smart recovery after resuming weak. The Shanghai Composite was quoted up by 165.48 points and the Hang Seng by 249.18 points after 1.30 pm. Illegal appointees have no right for regularisation: SC
New Delhi, July 6 (PTI) The Supreme Court has ruled that persons illegally appointed in government departments cannot claim any right for regularisation of their services. Even though such persons might have worked for a long time, yet it does not confer any automatic right for regularisation of their services, a bench of Justices S B Sinha and C K Thakker said, while dismissing a batch of appeals filed by persons working as "unpaid" assistants in Maharashtra's Revenue Department. Appointment of a person to any government post without observance of the statutory rules is "unconstitutional" and such individuals cannot claim regularisation of their services, the apex court said. The appellants Mahadeo Bhau Khilare and others were appointed as "assistants" for carrying out "documents copying work" in the state's revenue department by the local Tehsildars on commission basis, without any prior sanction from the government. Both the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal and the Bombay High Court dismissed the plea of the appellants for regularisation of their services following which they approached the apex court. The appellants argued that they were entitled to regularisation since the government had in 1995 regularised the services of similar appointees. PTI

Wipro acquires Singapore FMCG firm Unza for $246 mn
Bangalore, Jul 6 (PTI) Azim Premji-led IT and FMCG company Wipro Ltd today announced acquiring Singapore-based personal care firm Unza Holdings Ltd for USD 246 million (1,010.2 crore) in an all-cash deal. Unza, which recorded revenues of Rs 683.3 crore in the last financial year, has 48 brands, such as Enchanteur, Safi, Romano, Izzi, Vigor and Maxkleen, senior officials of the two companies told a news conference here today. Unza has a headcount of 4,000 and five manufacturing plants -- two in Malaysia and one each in Vietnam, China and Indonesia, Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting's President Vineet Agrawal said. The deal would be funded through internal accruals and the transaction is expected to be closed by this month-end. Revenues from the acquisition would start flowing in from the current quarter (July-September) itself, he said. As much as 50 per cent of Unza's business comes from Malaysia and the rest from markets such as Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Singapore and Nigeria. He said there would be no margin dilution following the buy-out because Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting business' operating margin was 12.5 per cent, while that of Unza is 12 per cent. New York Stock Exchange-listed Wipro's consumer care and lighting division clocked revenues of close to Rs 800 crore in 2006-07. Agrawal said there would not be any management changes in Unza as it is being run professionally. Wipro would conduct consumer test on introducing Unza brands in India and would also look at using Unza product formulations under its own brand of Santoor. PTI

Australia holds roadshows to woo Indian oil exploration firms
New Delhi, July 6 (PTI) Australia has invited Indian exploration companies to bid for its oil and gas acreage off western, northern and Victoria territories. Officials from the Australian Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources are currently holding roadshows in New Delhi and Mumbai. "The 2007 overseas promotion to two important Indian cities is targeted at medium to large scale exploration companies which already have a presence in Australian offshore exploration but have potential to expand," an official of the Australian government said here yesterday. He said the present acreage release comprises 34 areas located in six sedimentary basins. The release areas range from frontier to mature status blocks and "they offer opportunities for exploration companies of all sizes,". The New Delhi roadshow was attended by officials of India's leading exploration and gas firms including ONGC,GAIL and Reliance Industries. The bids will close in October this year and in April 2008. ITE Group to invest Rs 700 cr on exhibition centres
Ludhiana, July 6 (PTI) Leading exhibition organiser ITE Group will invest Rs 700 crore to set up state-of-the-art exhibition centres in different parts of the country. India to play warm-up game against Sussex tomorrow
Hove, July 6 (PTI) Fresh from their one-day cricket series triumph over the South Africans in Ireland, India will launch their gruelling tour of England with a four-day warm-up game against County champions Sussex here tomorrow. The two teams, however, will keep one eye on the quirky weather as it has been raining regularly here for the last few days. With hardly any cricket played for about a week since their series win against South Africa, the Indians will be looking forward to field their best combination in the two warm-up games leading up to the first Test at the Lord's on July 19. Accordingly, Test regulars Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman and Wasim Jaffer are almost certain to make the cut for the final eleven. Among the batsmen, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Dinesh Kaarthick will try to get rid of the rust and be in top shape ahead of the Test series. The Indian top order did well to get some runs under the belt against a decent South African attack in the Future Cup series and would be keen on continuing with that impressive form. In bowling department, S. Sreesanth has fully recovered from a bout of flu, that ruled him out of the one-day series in Ireland, and he will be sharing the new ball with Zaheer Khan. Captain Rahul Dravid will also be interested to see new pace inclusion Ranadeb Bose perform in a match situation. With the presence of Pakistan players Mushtaq Ahmed, Saqlain Mushtaq and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan in the rival ranks, the Indians can certainly expect a bit more spice added to the contest. PTI

Sehwag, Harbhajan set to be included in Twenty20 list
Mumbai, Jul 6 (PTI) Out-of-favour batsman Virender Sehwag and spin bowler Harbhajan Singh are expected to be included in the list of 30 Indian probables for the inaugural World Twenty20 championship when the national selectors meet here tomorrow. Sehwag lost his spot in the one-day team after the Bangladesh tour while Harbhajan is out of the side in both forms of the game and has been replaced by Ramesh Powar after the World Cup. Sehwag has tried to regain his touch in a local tournament in Delhi while Harbhajan has preferred the English country cricket route to parade his wares and reclaim his wicket-taking abilities. Both these players have not found a berth in the Test squad for England as well as the preceding one-day offshore ties in Ireland and Scotland. Among others likely to get the nod, subject to fitness, is young Uttar Pradesh batsman Suresh Raina, who has not played for more than four months because of a knee injury and has started physical training under the supervision of Cricket Board-appointed doctor's physiotherapist son. Selection panel chief Dilip Vengsarkar indicated to PTI that players coming back from injuries, such as Raina, needed to "prove their fitness" and cited competitions like the Buchi Babu tournament in Chennai as vehicles to do so. Only one practice game could leave India vulnerable: Chappell
Melbourne, Jul 6 (PTI) Former India coach Greg Chappell has said that only one tour game before the first cricket Test could leave the Indian team under-prepared for the tough tour of Australia later this year. India would get to play only one three-day tour match against Victoria at the Junction Oval from December 20 before the traditional Boxing Day Test against the world champions starting December 26. However Chappell, who has accepted an invitation from new Australian coach Tim Nielsen to work as an occasional consultant to the national team at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, said it was a reality of modern scheduling that touring sides got limited time to adjust to the extra bounce and pace of Australian pitches. "The more time you've got the better, but programmes in modern cricket just don't allow for it and international cricketers are used to it," Chappell, who resigned as the Indian coach after the World Cup, said. Sri Lanka, who too will tour Australia later this year, would also play just one game against Queensland before its first Test in November. "If you had a month and you could play four games, that would be perfect, but the modern programmes don't allow for it. That's the way it is, so the players just have to adjust as quickly as they can," Chappell was quoteed as saying by 'The Age' today. However, "it's not ideal," he added. PTI

Tri-series in Australia unlikely next year
Melbourne, Jul 6 (PTI) The annual one-day tri-series in Australia is in doubt next year and it is likely that South Africa and New Zealand could play separate rubbers against the world champions. While India and Sri Lanka have agreed to play the traditional limited-overs tournament this summer, negotiations are continuing with New Zealand and South Africa for 2008-09, local media reported today. As of now, New Zealand and South Africa are pencilled in for five one-day matches each against the Aussies in two separate series and it would be the first time since the World Series Cricket settlement in 1979-80 that a triangular one-day series is not played in Australia. "There's a hurdle in 2008-09. We need to work with both New Zealand and South Africa to determine what the programme looks like," Cricket Australia's Operations Manager Michael Brown said. "At this stage we have them committed for five one-day games each," he told 'The Australian'. South Africa Cricket had recently criticised what it believes is Australia's favourable schedule. They have made it clear that the following summer will be the last time it plays the traditional Boxing Day and New Year's Tests in Australia because they also stage its own. PTI

Randhawa sizzles in second place, Jeev ninth
Kildare (Ireland), July 6 (PTI) Jyoti Randhawa shot a flawless five-under 65 to position himself in tied second place after the opening round at the Smurfit Kappa European Open here. Compatriot Jeev Milkha Singh also had a fine day with a three-under 67, that had just one bogey. He was tied for ninth spot. However, Shiv Kapur, the third Indian in the fray, struggled with a nine-over 79 that set him way back in the field. Randhawa is already enjoying his best ever season on the European Tour where he already has six top-10 finishes, including a second. His first round performance at the rain-hit K Club has given him another opportunity for a breakthrough win. Dutchman Maarten Lafeber shot a six-under 64 to lead the field. He had skipped the practice round after playing a two-round Open qualifier earlier. Randhawa was tied with three others - Niclas Fasth of Sweden, winner of the recent BMW International Open, Frenchman Grigory Havret and England's Robert Rock. The Indian, who also played a 36-hole British Open qualifier at Sunningdale but failed to make it to Carnoustie, also chose to skip the practice round to get some rest. It paid dividends, as he made good use of the shortened holes and preferred lies to card a fine score. Randhawa started sedately on the 10th and parred the first six holes, before finding birdies on 15th and 17th. On the second stretch, he birdied the sixth and eagled the par-five seventh before finishing with two more pars. PTI

Pak minorities fear exclusion from voting rights
Islamabad, July 6 (PTI) The minorities in Pakistan have voiced fear that large sections of their community members may be barred from exercising their votes in the general elections due at the end of the year as they have been excluded from the electoral rolls. The Sikh, Hindu and Christian communities complained that the names of several voters from their community were missing from the draft list issued recently by the Election Commission of Pakistan. There is a feeling of resentment among the minorities, particularly the Hindu community, majority of whom are settled in interior Sindh like Tharparkar, Larkana, Umerkot and others. Mukesh Chawla, a provincial lawmaker and member of the Pakistan People's Party minority wing, said the names of 40 per cent of these voters were missing from the electoral list. Sardar Ramesh Singh, Chairman Sikh Naujawan Sabah said there were still a large number of Sikhs who had not registered for the upcoming elections due to the insufficient time period and the complicated registration process. "I thought July 3 was the last date for registration. I did not know the date had been extended. Our leaders did not inform us," Singh was quoted as saying by The News daily. Singh complained that the issued list displayed the names of only those who had registered in 2002. While he was not sure about the exact increase in the number of voters, Singh said, "In these five years, the number of voters must have increased approximately by a thousand, that is, from 2,500 to 3,500." "It is the constitutional responsibility of the government to register the eligible voters," said Mansha Noor, member of Caritas, a Catholic NGO. PTI

Sri Lankan air force launch strikes against Tamil Tigers
Colombo, Jul 6 (PTI) Sri Lanka's airforce today bombed Tamil Tiger targets as the guerrillas officially announced that their supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran attended ceremonies marking their Black Tiger anniversary. Three bombing raids were carried out in Batticaloa and Mannar districts this morning, the defence ministry said in a statement. It said attacks in Batticaloa in support of ground troops. Infantry is trying to capture the Tiger held Thoppigala region for the past few months. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) today released photographs of Prabhakaran lighting a lamp to commemorate the 322 men and women who staged suicide bombings in the past 20 years. It was a Tiger known as Captain Miller who staged the first suicide attack by driving a truck bomb into an army camp at Nelliyadi in the Jaffna peninsula on July 5, 1987, killing 40 government soldiers. Twin giant panda cubs born in southwest China
Beijing, July 6 (PTI) China's giant panda population got a twin-boost with the birth of two panda cubs in a research centre for the highly-endangered species. The first new cub is male and was born at 1:00 pm yesterday while the second one, whose sex is still unknown, was born five hours later. "The mother and her babies are doing well," said Zhang Zhihe, director of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Centre. The eight-year-old mother Shu Qing gave birth to a cub in 2004. "We believe she has plenty of experience to take care of the twin cubs," Zhang said. The birth of the twin cubs follows another birth at the centre on June 30. China made a major breakthrough in artificial breeding in the 1990s, with the number of newborn captive cubs rising from nine in 2000 to more than 20 last year. The State Forestry Administration said there are more than 200 giant pandas living in captivity on the Chinese mainland. As per an estimate, there are 1,590 giant pandas living in the wild, most of which are in southwest China. Giant pandas, also known as "living fossils", are among the world's most endangered species. They are considered China's 'national treasures' and Beijing often gifts panda cubs to other nations and regions. The Chinese government recently gifted two panda cubs to Hong Kong on the 10th anniversary of China's resumption of sovereignty over the former British territory. PTI

World Sikh orgn displeased over TV documentary in Canada
Toronto, Jul 6 (PTI) The World Sikh Organisation (WSO) has expressed its displeasure over a television documentary telecast by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) on the eve of the country's 140th Birthday. "At a time when Sikh Canadians celebrate their Canadian citizenship alongside fellow citizens of every profession, race, culture and creed, it is disheartening to see that one of Canada's most respected Crown Corporations has aired a documentary that hurt the Sikh community's sentiments with its factual errors and misrepresentations," the WSO said in a statement. Over the Canada Day weekend, the organisation has received hundreds of emails and phone calls from discouraged and frustrated Canadian Sikhs who are appalled at the inaccurate, imbalanced and negative media portrayal of the Sikh community, the statement said. "We assure the Canadian public and Sikh Canadians in particular, that the organisation has and will continue to protect the interests of the Sikh community in every way possible," it said. While the negative reaction to the documentary 'Samosa Politics' is understandable and justified, the WSO insists that the community's response must be calm, carefully considered and constructive, the statement said. Every effort will be made to set the record straight and see that the truth comes to light, the statement assured the Canadian Sikh community. PTI

Top PPP leader says no deal with Musharraf
New York, Jul 6 (PTI) Categorically denying reports of a deal between Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party and President Pervez Musharraf, a top PPP leader has said the party would instead remain committed to its alliance with exiled former Prime Minister Nazaw Sharif. "Our party has a reputation of fighting dictatorships, not making deals with them," Makhdoom Amin Fahim, vice-chairman of PPP and head of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) said amidst cheers at a public meeting Wednesday. "By entering into a deal with military rulers, we don't want to tarnish our record," he said, adding "we want to leave a legacy that would not become a matter of shame for our children." Fahim's statement came after a number of US-based PPP officials and those of PML-N voiced concern over such reports and said such a move would harm the party. He said that dictators employed such tactics to divide the opposition to perpetuate their rule. "We belong to the people and would only make a deal with them," he said. By standing up to Musharraf, he said, chief justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry had struck a cord with the masses and brought out their resentment against military rulers. PTI

Meghalaya returning to normalcy after Khasi stir
Shillong, Jul 6 (PTI) With the release of the jailed Khasi Student Union leaders, Meghalaya is now slowly limping back to normalcy after last month's agitations of the student bodies, NGOs and other social organisations. Normal life in the state, particularly in the east, west and Ri Bhoi districts were affected due to a series of Khasi Students' Union agitational programmes of office picketing, bandhs and night road blockades to protest the proposed mining by the Uranium Coporation of India Ltd (UCIL) in Kylleng Pyndeng Sohiong at Mawthabah area in West Khasi hills district. Bowing to the demands of women demonstrators, who had taken up the issue of the arrest of 17 KSU activists, five KSU members, belonging to the East Khasi hills district who were arrested under the MPDA were formally released on Thursday and two other KSU members belonging to the west Khasi are expected to be released very soon. Fourteen other KSU members who were arrested in connection with last month's ban have been released on bail. Around 150 women demonstrators were held for violating prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC while trying to force their way into the state secretariat to press for the release of Khasi Students' Union (KSU) activists. Deposits of uranium were discovered in various parts of Meghalaya way back in 1984. The atomic mineral division of the department of atomic energy conducted excavation and assessed the uranium deposits in Domiasiat and Mawthabah in West Khasi hills and in Dawki area near the Indo-Bangladesh border. Book: Passion Quotient-makes all the difference
New Delhi, Jul 5 (PTI) Ever wanted to know about your passion quotient (PQ)? Well if not, go for it as even as 20 per cent increase in PQ can act like virtual energy and work wonders for corporates, students and professionals alike, says a new book. "IQ or intelligence quotient comes more like a hard wired DNA bonanza which you cannot really improve upon, whereas you can raise your PQ threshold and become more creative by making some conscious efforts," author Virender Kapoor writes in "The Greatest Secret of Success: Your Passion Quotient". He says people with high IQ but low passion and drive have rarely made it to the top. "The fire in the belly ie., passion contributed more to Albert Einstein's success than his high IQ." Human emotions cannot be measured accurately. PQ cannot be assigned a number or figure as in the case of IQ. "But PQ is notional, indicative and representative in nature." Kapoor also relates passion with creativity. "In fact passion generates creativity and creativity needs passion. Passion can fire up that creative genius which all of us to some degree possess." Passion becomes the propelling force for professionals, entrepreneurs, musicians, actors, lawyers, pilots, writers, scientists, fashion designers and almost every conceivable human profession. It gets linked directly to the inner motivation which is a guiding spirit for self-motivated successful people. It is also the most important ingredient for leadership. (About the Book: "The Greatest Secret of Success: Your Passion Quotient"; Author: Virender Kapoor; Publishers: Macmillan India Ltd; Price: Rs 285; Pages: 258). PTI

The nutty industry takes another leap
Snehesh Alex Philip New Delhi, Jul 04, (PTI) With fitness freaks stressing on fat-free healthy diet, dry fruits like cashews, almonds are in for stiff competition from the new variants popularly known as the 'healthy nuts' or 'healthy dry fruits'. "Researchers and nutritionists across the world have proved that it is wrong to stay away from nuts because of the presumed fat and cholesterol. No, doubt, nuts indeed give you fat but then hazelnuts gives you good fat," says V N Dalmia of Dalmia Continental Private Ltd (DCPL) which is all set to market Leonardo Hazelnuts in India promoting it as a 'healthy nut'. Exports and importers dealing with dry fruits agree that new varieties of 'healthy nuts' are giving a strong competition to what was traditionally dry fruits in India namely, cashews, almonds and raisins. "The lifestyle trend is such that everyone wants to go in for healthy variants so why should dry fruits be any different. Now, we see that slowly traditional dry fruits like cashews are taking a backseat while new exotic dry fruits and nuts like macadamia from Australia and mulberries among other like dry cherries, dried plums and prunes gaining higher demand," says Sanjiv Obhrai, Director, Chocolatiers the Chocolate Boutique in the capital. "The market is growing for such dry fruits," he adds. Even DCPL, which recently launched packed hazelnuts in the market is very bullish with market expectations. "We expect sales of 60 tonnes which amounts to roughly Rs 3 crores in the first year and are looking at a compounded annual growth rate of 75 per cent per annum for the next five years," DCPL added. Pressure on Zoramthanga government mounting
H C Vanlalruata Aizawl, Jul 04 (PTI) With the election to the 40-member Mizoram Assembly only a year away, pressure had mounted against the Mizo National Front (MNF) government led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga from many fronts. Opposition parties are launching scathing attacks against the state government by repeatedly urging the centre to impose president's rule and end the 'misrule' of Zoramthanga regime. The three opposition combine - the Congress, the Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) and the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) are crying for the blood of the MNF government alleging nexus with insurgent groups, failure of law and order and rampant corruption. Allegations of the government nexus with Chakma and Hmar insurgent groups had been thrown thick and fast inside the state legislature and outside while processions were taken out and bandhs imposed by the opposition combine. The plethora of allegations leveled against the state government prompted state Home Minister Tawnluia to propose constitution of a House Inquiry Committee which was implemented by the Assembly Speaker Lalchamliana. Saikapthianga of the Mizoram Congress Party (MCP) a breakaway group of the state PCC and junior partner of the ruling MNF was appointed as chairman of the seven-member Inquiry Committee. Opposition parties, however, were not happy with the Speaker's decision and demanded that the Inquiry Committee should be headed by an opposition member, preferably former Chief Minister and Congress legislature party leader Lal Thanhawla.
