Omar Abdullah escapes unhurt in grenade attack
Srinagar, July 9 (PTI) National Conference President Omar Abdullah today escaped unhurt when militants lobbed two grenades on a house in Kupwara district targeting him but these exploded some 300 metres away.
Three CRPF jawans and a special police officer were, however, injured in the attack which came minutes after Abdullah addressed a rally in Kupwara district, official sources said.
Omar was inside the house of senior party worker at Kraligund in Handwara, 80 kms from here, when unidentified ultras fired two grenades in quick succession around 3.45 pm, the sources said.
Both the grenades exploded 300 metres away from the house resulting in injuries to three CRPF personnel and SPO Fayaz Ahmad, the sources said adding the injured were hospitalized.
The attack came barely 15 minutes after he addressed a public meeting in the north Kashmir town of Handwara, the sources said.
The entire area was immediately cordoned off by the police assisted by security forces and a hunt has been launched to nab the militants involved in the attack, they said.
No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack. PTI
Car bomb suspect had visited al-Qaeda heartland in Pak
London, July 9 (PTI) At least one of the alleged plotters of the London and Glasgow car bombings had visited al-Qaeda leaders in Pakistan, a leading British daily claimed today.
Without naming the person, The Daily Telegraph said "the information suggests that the leaders of the gang may have been seeking approval from al-Qaeda before going ahead with their plan." According to the report, yesterday a senior doctor at Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock, Scotland, said there was a delay in one of the alleged plotters taking up his post.
"There were some problems with a visa and he was about two weeks late getting here," the unnamed doctor said. "There were calls from him about the delay and he was in Pakistan at the time." The main figures in other plots, including the July 7, 2005 suicide bombers, the fertiliser gang and "gas limo" terrorists all visited al-Qaeda leaders in Pakistan before finalising their plans, the report said.
It is likely the car bomb plot was inspired by attacks in Iraq but needed clearance from the Pakistan cells before it was sanctioned by al-Qaeda, the newspaper said.
The bomb-making tips could have been gleaned from Arabic websites which gave details of how to make gas cylinders explode.
Quoting sources, the newspaper said potassium chlorate from household matches formed a key ingredient of the detonators. PTI
Flood-alert sounded in 80 villages in Gujarat
Ahmedabad, Jul 9 (PTI) A flood-alert has been sounded across 80 villages located on banks of rivers flowing through Bharuch, Vadodara and Ahmedabad districts in Gujarat, official sources said this morning.
About 72 villages in Bharuch and Vadodara districts, located downstream near the banks of river Narmada have been alerted as water levels are expected to rise due to heavy inflow of water from Madhya Pradesh.
"The Sardar Sarovar dam built on Narmada has once again started overflowing after the Omkarsent 1.5 lakh cuesecs of water has been overflowing from the dam. Due to this we have already sounded an alert in 72 villages located downstream," he added.

Meanwhile, a similar flood-alert has also been sounded in about 18 villages located on the banks of rivers Vatrak and Mazum in Ahmedabad district. PTI
Indians throng Dubai consulate to seek amnesty status
Dubai, Jul 9 (PTI) Hundreds of Indians are queueing up at the Indian Consulate here to get their passports or emergency certificates in view of the three-month long amnesty declared by the UAE government.
Majority among the amnesty seekers were absconders who had come to the consulate upon learning that the Indian authorities had received thousands of passports of Indian citizens from the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD).
The amnesty began on June one and ends on August 31.
Special seating arrangements were made yesterday for the amnesty seekers in the consulate auditorium as the huge rush of people had taken even the local authorities by surprise.
Amnesty-seekers started arriving at the consulate since early morning and local police was deployed near the entrance to ensure queues.
Confirming the problems faced by the Indian mission due to the heavy rush of amnesty seekers, Indian Consul General Venu Rajamony said, "We have received around 30,000 passports from DNRD. It's a big job to sort out all these passports and give them to their owners. The list of passports is available on the Indian Consulate Website:www.Cgidubai.Com." "Due to the extra work generated on account of the amnesty announced by the UAE authorities and due to the holiday rush, the Consulate is facing unprecedented number of visitors. Sundays and Mondays are peak days at the Consulate," Rajamony said. PTI
Terrorist outfits prefer to train educated youth, says expert
Bharathi Raghunath
Bangalore, July 9 (PTI) Terrorist outfits prefer to recruit educated youth in the name of Jihad as it is "easy" for them to facilitate scientifically planned attacks, according to an expert.
Since a lot of preparation and "actual scientific planning" goes into terror attacks, the groups prefer educated youth, Assistant Director of Forensic Science Laboratory Malini told PTI.
The groups brainwash the young, educated minds into thinking that by doing their kind of 'Jihad', they will reach Jannat (heaven), Malini, who is an expert in criminal psychology, said.
"Terrorist groups find it easy to mislead the minds of educated youth in the name of Jihad, which actually means sacrifice life for God in a positive manner and not the way these groups interpret." Malini said there have been instances when MBAs and doctors were involved in terror attacks in India.
Persons who have been trained by ISI for explosives and weapons in Pakistan for a period of four years have revealed that terrorist groups have different types of training for educated and uneducated youth, she said.
While educated youth are used for preparation of bombs, selection of targets and planting of bombs, it is the uneducated who are mostly used as suicide bombers.
"In the failed UK terror plot, Kafeel Ahmed was not meant to be a suicide bomber. He suffered burns because the mission failed," she opined. PTI
West Bengal pins for 50 pc growth in IT
Kolkata, July 9 (PTI) West Bengal today said it was targeting a growth of 50 per cent in IT sector during the current fiscal.
"We grew by 46 per cent in 2006-07 which is higher than the national average of 32 per cent. During the previous year the growth was 31 per cent in comparison to the corresponding period the year before," IT minister Debesh Das said here today at an IT conference, 'ITCon-Destination East'.
"We hope to register 100 IT companies in West Bengal during the current financial year. In the previous year, the total number of new companies registered stood at 57," he added.
Das at the same time acknowledged that the state has to go a long way to match the growth of some states of the south.
The state has targeted to garner 15 per cent marketshare of the total national IT exports by 2011.
Das stated that work for Siliguri IT park has started and things would be worked out by the end of this year for the Kalyani IT park.
West Bengal is probably the only state which provides training cost subsidy for small IT companies to a maximum of Rs 25,000 per students, Das said, to improve quality manpower. PTI

TVS plans two new bikes; expects 10 pc growth in FY08
New Delhi, July 9 (PTI) Unnerved by the slowdown in domestic demand for two-wheelers, country's third largest manufacturer TVS Motor Co today said it expects to maintain a double digit growth in the current fiscal on the back of new products launches.
The company would unveil a brand new commuter segment motorcycle in October and also introduce a variant of an existing model early next year.
TVS today introduced an upgraded variant of its premium bike Apache, Apache 160 RTR, positioned as a sports bike, priced at Rs 58,854 (ex-showroom Delhi).
"The two-wheeler market, which is witnessing a slowdown is expected to bounce back by October. We are hopeful of maintaining a 10 per cent year-on-year growth as we are preparing to launch atleast two new products," TVS Motor Co VP Sales and Marketing R Chandramouli told reporters here.
The company had reported sales of 1.53 million two-wheelers and expects sales to cross 1.7 million this year.
TVS, which cut its bike production by about 5,000 units from 55,000 units a month in June, expects to produce about 60,000 units with the launch of Apache RTR, he said.
Chandramouli, however, declined to divulge details of the new products saying that the new bikes would be positioned in the mass commuter segment.
On the exports front, he said, the company expects to register 25-30 per cent growth in overseas sales. TVS had exported over one lakh units in the last fiscal.
With rivals like Bajaj uping the ante in the higher powered segment, TVS is also in the process of developing bigger engine capacity bikes to match competition.
"The direction is yes...We are slowly working towards developing higher powered sports bike," he added. PTI
Economics behind decision to select Boeing 787: Air India
By Sridhar Krishnaswami
Seattle, Jul 9 (PTI) As Boeing rolled out its new B-787 'Dreamliner', Air India has said it had chosen the aircraft as its work-horse keeping in mind concerns of economics and environment while the US aircraft major promised to buy goods and services from Indian companies in return.
"We didn't actually chose Boeing as such. We chose the aircraft," Air India Chairman and Managing Director V Thulasidas told reporters here yesterday.
Observing that selecting the B-787 made "better business sense", he said the choice for the aircraft and its engines was "actually a major step" in increasing fuel efficiency and savings, besides making flying environment-friendly.
Boeing's Senior Vice President (Sales) Dinesh Keskar said "the biggest piece is our commitment to India of 1.7 billion US dollars as part of this deal where we will buy goods and services from companies in India.
"It is going to create a lot of potential jobs in India and at the same time transfer technology. We are working with quality companies in India like Infosys, Wipro, Satyam, HCL and we are also continuing to work with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited," Keskar said.
Boeing has already agreed to create a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Nagpur and a pilot training programme by funding to develop some existing flying schools.
While Air India has ordered 27 B-787s as part of its total order of 68 aircraft, Jet Airways has booked ten of them. For Air India, the 787s would be the mainstay of its operations in future. PTI
Sensex likely to hit 16,000 level by Dec: Citi
Mumbai, Jul 9 (PTI) Global research firm Citi today said the benchmark index Sensex is likely to hit the 16,000 mark by December this year, with a robust growth in revenue of the corporate India.
"We are positive on Indian equities over the next 6-12 months and expect the growth to remain robust. We have a target of 16,000 for December and 17,500-18,400 for December 2008," Citi Investment Research India head Ratnesh Kumar said in its latest report.
The Sensex touched the intra-day high of 15,000 on last Friday.
In the first half of the year, the market had lagged its regional peers due to jitters caused by inflation, rate hikes, tightening liquidity and currency appreciation, even though it bounced back from March lows and is up 7.8 per cent so far in 2007.
"But the worst is over on these concerns now... We also expect the central bank to take fewer market dampening actions over the next 6-12 months," Kumar said.
Inflow of funds has made a significant rise and foreign institutional investors have already brought 1.81 billion dollars this month, compared to four billion dollars in the first half of the year, he added.
However, the research firm cautioned that this year growth in the stock market would be less spectacular than recent years.
On the earnings side, Citi forecast a fat revenue figure to adorn corporate India's books on the back of rapid economic growth though the performance might not be that spectacular.
Despite a high base 25-30 per cent earnings for the last five consecutive years, Citi continues to see solid earnings growth in India. PTI
BCCI taking steps to improve umpiring standards
Mumbai, Jul 9 (PTI) BCCI, the Indian Cricket Board, is planning to introduce a software in the system of video recording of domestic matches which will help them in assessing the performance of Indian umpires on a regular basis.
The BCCI's umpires committee met here today and was given a demonstration by two computer experts, who have developed softwares.
"The software will enable us to assess the performance of the umpires in various matches in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy so that we can then grade these umpires later," said BCCI's joint secretary M P Pandove.
"But the members were not fully satisfied with the programme presented to us and wanted some modifications done before they come back to us after a week's time," Pandove said.
The BCCI has introduced the system of video recording of domestic matches since last season.
The meeting today was attended by BCCI vice president Lalit Modi, who heads the committee, secretary Niranjan Shah, Director of umpires - S Venkataraghavan, Pandove and CAO Ratnakar Shetty. PTI

Sack me if you can, Kapil dares BCCI
New Delhi, July 9 (PTI) Former captain Kapil Dev has dared the BCCI to sack him from the Chairman's post at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for his alignment with the rebel Indian Cricket League.
Kapil earned the Board's wrath by joining Essel Group's ICL as the Chairman of its Executive Board and the BCCI, in its recent Working Committee meeting, decided that no individual would be allowed to be with both the parties at the same time.
BCCI shot a letter to Kapil asking him not to align with the ICL, but the former all-rounder was unperturbed.
"I have already sent my reply to them," Kapil told 'Aaj Tak' channel.
"They can remove me from the NCA if they want to," said a nonchalant Kapil.
"They only wanted me to contribute to the game of cricket and when I am doing so they cannot challenge me. If I can do something for the game and the young cricketers through Indian Cricket League, I will not budge," he asserted.
Recently, former stumper and ex-chairman of selection committee Kiran More resigned from the secretary's post at the Baroda Cricket Association to join the ICL board.
Kapil was also aghast at the BCCI decision to stop pension to former players who align with the ICL.
"I did not go to them asking for pension and if they want to stop it, what can I do? Let them stop it," said country's lone World Cup winning captain.
Asked if he should have asked for BCCI permission before joining ICL, Kapil said, "I don't need to ask the BCCI for every small thing." PTI
Lal Masjid: A name synonymous with radical Islam
K J M Varma
Islamabad, July 9 (PTI) Red is the colour militant Islamists shunned because it is identified with communists, or a "Kafir", meaning an infidel, but the Lal Masjid or the Red Mosque currently besieged by Pakistani troops to flush out militants remained synonymous with its "red" brand of Islam ever since its inception over four decades ago.
The sprawling Masjid in central Islamabad perhaps is one of the rare mosques to have a name not connected with Islamic religion. True to its name, it remained a centre of defiance ever since it was constructed in 1965, even though it was managed by the government.
Lal Masjid is the name given by Auqaf department that managed it, which many believe was due to its red-coloured walls and interiors. Over the years, it became a centre of radical Islam playing a major role in generating the jihadis to fight the occupation of Afghanistan by erstwhile Soviet Union and after that transferred into a centre of extremist Sunny ideology.
Maulana Abhdullah, the father of the two clerics, Abdul Aziz and his younger brother Abdul Rashid Ghazi was chosen as the first cleric of the mosque by none other than Pakistan's first military ruler Ayub Khan.
The clerics remained in the payrole of the government ever since receiving state funds, salary and patronage.
Aziz was caught while fleeing from the besieged masjid in a burqa, while Ghazi along with hundreds of miltants are still holed up inside vowing to fight till death. PTI
Pak SC forms bench to review security steps near Lal Masjid
Islamabad July 9 (PTI) Taking suo motu notice of the problems faced by residents living near the besieged Lal Masjid, Pakistan Supreme Court today formed a two judge bench to review the steps taken by the government that included imposition of curfew and cutting off power supply to the area.
The court expressed concern over the sufferings of the people in the curfew-hit areas and the safety of the students holed up inside the mosque.
Appearing before the court, head of the Crisis Management Cell in the Interior Ministry Javed Iqbal Cheema said the government wants early solution to the problem.
He said 'terrorists are holed up inside the mosque who are wanted in several cases'.
Cheema said that the militants have held students hostage and that they shot and injured three students who tried to escape from the mosque yesterday.
He also claimed that 12 girl students, who want to leave the besieged mosque and seminary, have started hunger strike in protest.
The security forces have reportedly deferred plans to storm the mosque today and are looking into a new strategy after getting fresh information of the situation inside the besieged mosque by an unmanned aerial vehicle.
The government has confirmed that at least 24 people were killed but the Lal Masjid deputy Abdul Rashid Ghazi claims that more than 300 students have died during operation. The claim has been denied by the government. PTI

More than 49,000 houses collapsed and another 240,100 were damaged as a result of torrential rains which began lashing Huaihe River valley, east area of Sichuan Province and south area of Shaanxi Province on June 28.

China condemns attack on Chinese nationals in Pakistan
Islamabad, July 9 (PTI) China has demanded greater security for its nationals living in Pakistan with increasing number of its citizens coming under attack by Islamist militants in the South Asian country.
Condemning the killings of three Chinese workers in the restive northwest Pakistan yesterday, believed to have been carried out by suspected extremists to show their resentment on the crackdown on militants holed up in Lal Masjid, China urged the Pakistani authorities to do more to protect its citizens in the country.
Pakistan must quickly "investigate it (the attack), round up the culprits, properly handle the follow-up issues and take effective measures to protect all Chinese in Pakistan," said Luo Zhaohui, China's ambassador to Pakistan in a statement.
The Chinese embassy said its deputy chief, Mao Siwei, and other Chinese diplomats had gone to Peshawar to deal with the issue.
A senior security official in Islamabad said the attack appeared to have been carried out in revenge for the ongoing efforts by security forces to drive out militants holed up in the besieged Lal Masjid in the capital.
"It appears to be an act of terrorism committed by those unhappy about the government action against the Lal Masjid following the abduction of Chinese women last month," a report quoted the official as saying.
Some reports said the attackers raised slogans and took video footage of the scene before leaving the place.
The three Chinese died when gunmen opened fire inside an auto-rickshaw factory in Peshawar. A fourth Chinese national was seriously wounded. PTI
Business of coaching
Anurag Sharma
New Delhi, Jul 9 (PTI) Charmed by the power of being driven around in a beacon ambassador car or attracted to fat paycheques drawn by engineers and doctors, the growing demand by students for professional courses like engineering, medicine and civil service has led to private coaching industry flourishing like never before.
Educationists however, consider this as a grim reflection of the country's education system.
"We have yet not done any survey about how big the coaching industry is but definitely it is mushrooming across the country because of the lack of proper education system", says a senior official in the Education Department, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
The public perception now is that private tuition is a necessity to succeed in entrance tests and board exams, she adds. "The main problems that plague our education system today are lack of infrastructure and the environment to prepare students for competitive exams," she says.
Coaching centres all over the country thrive on the ever-growing demand of students who are keen on getting a professional education. Some of these centres have grown to become big business houses by providing their services all around the country, and reaping profits.
The average private institute that trains students for IIT-JEE demands anything between Rs 40,000 and 50,000. And this doesn't include the cost of study material. The fees maybe higher for 'crash' course. PTI
Dealing with divorce made easy
New Delhi, Jul 8 (PTI) "You are bound to come across many, many reminders of your marital life. This can be fairly distressing. Don't hesitate to throw out photographs and letters if they upset you for holding on to your past is not going to help you make a clean break for the future." This and many other tips on how to deal with that difficult situation form part of a new book, 'Dealing with divorce made easy, The essential Handbook' by Leela Kirloskar, a lawyer turned publisher.
Statistics reveal a steep rise in marriages in India ending up in divorce in courts. Seventy per cent of these figures represent young people in the age group of 25 to 35. Amicable separation within the first year of marriage has increased by 30 per cent since 2000 while 85 per cent went in for a divorce within the first five years of marriage.
The book attempts to explain the process of divorce in India and the legal provisions as simply as possible, the author says.
India has the most complex family laws in the world. Along with the social, familial and emotional pressures you will inevitably face it is a complicated recipe most people would not like to taste, she says.
According to the last census of 2001, divorce rates have gone up sharply over recent years mainly in cities, from four per cent in 1980s to 14 per cent in 2001. In Mumbai alone, the percentage shot up by 56 per cent between 1991 and 2001.
According to Indian Statistical Institute figures, over 8000 divorce petitions were filed in 2001 and the figures have definitely gone up, Kirloskar says. (About the book: 'Dealing with divorce made easy; The essential handbook', by Leela Kirloskar, Roli Books, pages 138, price Rs.195/-) PTI
Delhi will go dry, Mumbai, Chennai risk floods: UN
New Delhi, Jul 8 (PTI) Many of the world's largest cities like Mumbai and Chennai on the sea coasts and at the mouths of the great rivers face a considerable danger of being flooded due to extreme climatic events as a result of global warming, says a report.
Coastal cities are increasingly at risk from seaward hazards such as sea level rise and stronger storms induced by climate change, says a recent report released by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Sea level rise, especially if combined with extreme climatic events, would flood large parts of coastal cities, says 'State of World Population, 2007'.
The report adds that sea level rise would also introduce salt water into surface fresh water and aquifers, affecting cities' water supply, and modify critical ecosystems supplying ecological services and natural resources to urban areas.
The population especially when concentrated in large urban areas within rich ecological zones can be a burden on coastal ecosystems, many of which are already under stress, it added.
Pointing out that the best way to prevent such a scenario would be to avoid policies that favour coastal development, it asked for a better coastal zone management.
Talking about other dangers that big cities will face due to global warming, the report says, dry cities like Delhi will face acute water crisis. PTI
Third Front in Himachal
Sanjay Kumar Sinha
Shimla, Jul 8 (PTI): Buoyed by its massive victory in Uttar Pradesh, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and suspended Congress legislator Vijay Singh Mankotia are asserting they would have an important role as Third Front in the polls early next year, an optimism not shared by the Congress and BJP.
BSP general secretary Man Singh Manhera has repeatedly asserted that the dalit party would repeat its 'social engineering' in Himachal Pradesh in the assembly elections due in February next year.
He has already announced to field candidates on all the 68 seats.
Suspended Congress MLA from Shahpur Vijay Singh Mankotia, who has created furore in the hill state by releasing CD leveling serious corruption allegations against Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and his MP wife Pratibha Singh, has also hinted of a Third Front which would play an important role in the state assembly polls.
The Third Front would take a shape after presidential elections, Mankotia told PTI.
Many leaders of national parties are in touch with me for formation of a joint front against the Congress and BJP in HP, he added.
But, ruling Congress and BJP do not see any significant role of the Third Front in HP.
Senior congress leader and former Union Minister Sukh Ram has also cautioned the grand old party against emergence of BSP in the hill state. PTI
