UNPA to abstain in presidential poll
New Delhi, Jul 14 (PTI) With Muslim votes and a tie-up for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections apparently on its mind, the United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) today decided to abstain from voting in the presidential election and announced it would field its own nominee for the vice-presidential poll. Seeking to maintain equi-distance from UPA and NDA, the UNPA, known as the Third Front, declared that abstaining was the only viable option for it in the July 19 battle between Pratibha Patil and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat . "We will not support a candidate backed by the UPA or the NDA. There is no change in our decision. The UNPA will abstain" from voting in the presidential poll, AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa told reporters after a three-hour meeting of the grouping, asserting that there was no legal bar to such a move. The UNPA's decision has come as a dampener for Shekhawat, whose campaign managers were betting heavily on its support. This was despite projections from the UPA-Left that even if the UNPA went whole hog with Shekhawat, Patil was still set to win hands down. A highlight of the meeting of the newly formed grouping of regional parties was the attack on the Left for "siding" with the Congress and the UPA in the presidential poll. The leaders, including Mulayam Singh Yadav and N Chandrababu Naidu who have close rapport with Left parties, ruled out backing the Left in the vice-presidential race as long as it was with the Congress-led UPA. "If the Left withdraws support to the Congress government, then the UNPA will support the Left candidate in the vice-presidential election," Jayalalithaa said. PTI

Haneef charged with providing support to terrorist group
Natasha Chaku Melbourne, Jul 14 (PTI) Dashing his hopes of early release, Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef was today charged with providing "reckless" support to a terrorist organisation in connection with the failed UK terror plot which the Australian Federal police said was done without intent. "The allegation is that Haneef provided support to a terrorist group," Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty was quoted as saying in Canberra by TV channels. "The specific allegation regards recklessness rather than intention -- the allegation being that he was reckless about some of the support he provided to that (UK) group, in particular the provision of his SIM card for the use of the group." Police had yesterday decided not to seek extension of the detention of the 27-year-old Gold Coast Hospital Registrar, who was taken into custody 12 days back, leading to hopes that he might be released. Haneef applied for bail after being charged but the hearing on his application was adjourned to Monday by a Brisbane court. He sat silently in the court while arguments were presented regarding his bail plea before magistrate Jacqui Payne for more than an hour, ABC radio said. Police alleged that he "recklessly" provided his SIM card to UK terror suspects Sabeel and Kafeel Ahmed when he left Britain for Australia last year. The Commonwealth opposed his bail, conceding the offence was perhaps at the margins but by no means insignificant, with a maximum penalty of 15 years in jail. PTI

13 Pak soldiers killed in suicide attack
K J M Varma Islamabad, Jul 14 (PTI) At least 13 soldiers were killed and 15 others injured today when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into a military convoy in Pakistan's restive tribal region in an apparent retaliation by pro-Taliban militants to the recent crackdown on the Lal Masjid here. The attack took place near Daz Nerai area in North Waziristan Tribal Agency around 1130 hours local time, Pakistan's defence spokesman Maj Gen Waheed Arshad said. A car filled with explosives hit a military convoy, which was moving from Ramzak to Bannu, he said. Local officials in Miranshah, a town in the tribal agency, said that 13 soldiers were killed and 15 injured in the attack. However, Arshad confirmed the death of only eight Army men. Today's attack came two days after a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of a political agent's office in Miranshah killing four people and injuring three others. On the same day, two suicide bombers rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a police patrol killing three policemen at Mingora area. The attacks followed the July 10 Army storming of the Lal Masjid here in which 102 people were killed and scores others, including 44 commandos, injured. Eleven soldiers were among those killed while the rest were militants. Arshad told the media here that the military cannot rule out that attacks in tribal areas were a fallout of the action against the Lal Masjid. It "could be," he said when asked whether today's attack was a fallout of the Army crackdown on the Lal Masjid. At the same time, he reminded that such incidents took place earlier also. PTI

91 civilians among 102 killed in Lal Masjid operation
Islamabad, July 14 (PTI) Pakistan has admitted deaths of 91 civilians in the military operation to flush out Islamic extremists barricaded in Lal Masjid, which left radical cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi and 100 others dead. "Altogether 102 people have died in the operation. The breakdown is: 10 Army officers, a Ranger and 91 civilians," the 'Dawn' reported today, quoting Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao as saying. The admission came two days after President Pervez Musharraf hinted in a televised address to the nation that some women and children had died in the fierce clashes that turned the capital into a battleground. The Interior Minister said 248 people were also injured in the entire operation, out of which 27 were still undergoing treatment in the hospital. Out of 75 people killed in the final assault, Sherpao said the bodies of ten have been identified, including that of Maulana Abul Aziz's son. Three bodies have been handed over to their families. Claiming that bodies of five foreign militants killed in the operation have also been identified, Sherpao said, "There must be more bodies of foreign militants." He said that the government would soon publish a list of all those killed, injured, detained and set free. Meanwhile, authorities imposed prohibition on the surrounding areas of Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa late last night, restricting the movement of common people. The restrictions were issued under the Anti-Terrorist Act and will remain imposed for a week, 'The News' reported, quoting a senior police officer as saying. PTI

RBI asks banks to start implementing export package
Mumbai, Jul 13 (PTI) The Reserve Bank today directed all commercial banks to reduce interest rates on export finance by two percentage points following government's decision to grant subsidy to exporters hit hard by rise in rupee value. RBI notified that two percentage points interest subsidy should be given to nine sectors - textiles, leather products, readymade garments, handicrafts, engineering products, sports goods, processed agriculture products, marine items and toys. The benefit would extend to small and medium exporters whose investment in plant and machinery does not exceed Rs 10 crore. Now, credit to these categories of exporters will be available at 4.5 per cent less than the prime lending rate, which is in the range of 12 per cent. Earlier, the difference was 2.5 per cent. This rate will apply to pre-shipment and post-shipment credit disbursed between April and December 2007. The subsidy of two per cent would be borne by the central government, which early this announced a Rs 1,400 crore package for exporters feeling the pinch after the Indian currency rose nearly nine per cent against the dollar since the beginning of 2007. Saudi firm to set up mfg unit in India for baby care goods
Kochi, Jul 14 (PTI) Saudi Arabia-based Al Batterjee Group plans to set up a manufacturing plant for baby care products in India and is targeting a turnover of Rs 20 crore in the first year of operations in the country. Company's Managing Director Sohail Fayyad told a press meet here that the manufacturing facility would be established soon, but declined to specify the investment figure and location of the proposed unit. "We are exploring several possibilities," he said. He said the company was focussing on India as major outlet for the 'Nunu' brand of baby care products. It had tied up with Kerala-based Valy group for marketing of products, which are sold in over 37 countries, he said. The products would include baby shampoo, powder, soap, lotions, oil and baby wipes. Jose Valy of the Valy group said the products were being launched in Kerala first as several Keralites in the Gulf were aware of the brand. The Saudi Arabia-based diversified group, with an annual turnover of USD 200 million dollars, already has an understanding with Liyod Steel India for manufacturing of various steel products. The USD-80-million venture is expected to bring the group to the forefront of the Saudi steel industry, Fayyad said. The group has also signed an MoU with Mumbai-based Unitech Group for providing logistics operations in Saudi Arabia. The project, which is expected to have an investment of USD 50 million, plans to introduce 200 trucks initially and then scale up the operation. PTI

Traders said the buying activity picked by among stockists and retailers for the coming marriage season. They said restricted arrivals also helped the prices to go up while silver eased on stockists selling at existing higher levels. Sensex, Nifty at new all-time highs
Mumbai, July 14 (PTI) Stocks: The key indices Benchmark Sensex and Nifty scaled new heights on day-to-day basis on a spate of positive developments in the week under review but the rising open interest positions caused worries among investors. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) barometer hit an all-time trading high of 15,330.73 and also ended the week at a new closing peak of 15,272.72, netting a whopping gain of 308.60 points or 2.06 per cent. Similarly, the broad-based S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) touched a life-time intra-trade record high of 4,513.90 before ending the week at 4,504.55, a net rise of 119.70 points or 2.73 per cent. The sustained rally was largely attributed to strong expectations of encouraging first quarter earnings even after IT bellwether Infosys Technologies slashed revenue guidance for the current financial year due to the rupee's appreciation against dollar while announcing Q1 results on July 10. The market was bolstered by buoyant global markets during the week as well as hopes of consolidation in the global metal industry after global miner Rio Tinto made a USD 38 billion offer to buy Canada's Alcan Inc triggering a strong buying momentum in metal stock at home. The market has witnessed consistent buying so far in the month and scaled new peaks almost on day-to-day basis. The prime market-mover Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) played a key role in the bull run, pumping in more than Rs 8,500 crore in the first nine trading days of July. The inflows amounted to Rs 2,655 crore in the initial four day of the week. PTI

Flintoff aiming to be back for ODI series against India
London, Jul 14 (PTI) Forced out of the upcoming cricket Test series against India due to an ankle injury, England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is desperate to be back in the team for the ODI series that will follow. "In terms of exact dates, it is hard to say. I hope to play a part against India, but the one-dayers are a more realistic target," he was quoted by 'BBC Sport' as saying. "The impatience is starting now. I've been back in the nets and I've been hitting them all right," he added. The 29-year-old is recovering from a third right ankle surgery and is out of the Test series starting next week at Lord's. The seven-match ODI series starts at Hampshire's Rose Bowl on August 21. "Because I'm running now, doing proper things and working towards something, I can see light at the end of the tunnel and I have a temptation to get impatient," he said. Flintoff, however, admitted that he was not in best of form, especially with the bat, before getting injured. But he was determined to regain top form on his return to action. "During the winter there was a clear dip in form and I want to get it back," he said. "The bowling was fine but I still think, no matter what I do with the ball, as a top-six batsman I will always get judged on the runs I score," he added. Though disappointed with the lean phase and injury breaks, Flintoff said he had enough time in hand to make amends for the lost opportunities. "For two or three years, I had things pretty much my own way, then I experienced the other side of it. But I'm only 29 and I believe I've got my best years in front of me. I can do it again," he said. PTI

Subbiah has personal problems, insists IWHF
New Delhi, July 14 (PTI) Indian Women's Hockey Federation today claimed that the national team's goalkeeping coach A B Subbaiah had stepped down because of personal reasons. Federation Secretary Amrit Bose said Subbaiah was not willing to part with the team and had taken a temporary break. She rubbished reports that Subbaiah walked away because he was not happy with his contract. "It (whatever is written) is not correct. What he has said, that he has personal problems, is very true. He has told me that he cannot continue as his wife is unwell. She was operated upon six months back and the follow-up treatment is going on," Bose told PTI. The IWHF secretary said Subbaiah had assured that he will be available for the national team's camps in Bangalore, whenever they are held. "After the Asian Games, Subbaiah said that he won't be able to go outside Bangalore till September. But he promised that whenever a camp is held in Bangalore, he would attend it on and off. He was present during the last camp there. "Neither have we got rid of him, nor does he want to leave. He has not hidden anything from us. He said he would help us out whenever necessary. But we should show sympathy and respect one's privacy," Bose said. She claimed that the IWHF had good relationships with coaches and was keen to maintain that. "We have a very good relationship with our coaches. Even M K Kaushik is still with us. The problem is his department is not releasing him. And Subbaiah is such good boy, why should we get rid of him?" she said. PTI

Harbhajan keen to impress India with success at Surrey
London, Jul 14 (PTI) Harbhajan Singh says he would not let his prime goal of getting back into the Indian cricket team distract him from his immediate task of helping Surrey get promoted to the top division of county championship. The Punjab off-spinner, overlooked by the national selectors for tour of England, said the presence of the Indian team on the English soil made it all the more important for him to do well for Surrey. "It's great to play my cricket over here because the India side are in this country too at the moment. If I do get the call from India I'll play and take some wickets for them, but at the moment I'm just looking to take Surrey to the next level," Harbhajan said. "Once I found out I was not part of the India team touring England I made a few calls to local people over here and they were very keen to have me back," Harbhajan was quoted as saying by the 'South London' website today. "I know it's not been a great season for Surrey so far but there is still a lot of cricket to go. I'm sure if we play some quality stuff we should be able to turn the table around. We've got the team that can win games, we've done it before. "This is a great opportunity for me. I'm just going to go out and play the way that I can play and try and get lots and lots of wickets for my team," the 27-year-old, who has taken 238 wickets and scored 986 runs in 57 Test matches. Harbhajan had an immediate impact by helping the former champions to a six-wicket victory over Durham this week. PTI

Russia suspends application of arms control treaty
Moscow, Jul 14 (PTI) Russia today suspended its obligations under the cornerstone European arms control treaty concluded at the end of the Cold War between now defunct Soviet-led Warsaw Pact and NATO, the Kremlin said. "Russia is suspending its participation in the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE). A related decree has been signed by the President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin," the Kremlin press service announced, adding the law takes effect immediately. This step has been taken due to "exceptional conditions, having direct bearing on the security of the Russian Federation and demanding urgent measures," it said. CFE was signed in November 1990 and came into force in 1992, when the Warsaw Pact and Soviet Union had already ceased to exist. In last April, Putin had indicated Moscow's intention to declare moratorium on its obligations under the CFE since the NATO members have not ratified its adapted version after the collapse of Warsaw Pact and, some of the new members of enlarged US-led military alliance have not even joined it. NATO has linked the beginning of adapted CFE ratification to the Russian military withdrawal from former Soviet republics of Georgia and Moldova. And at an emergency session of CFE member states, summoned in Vienna at the request of Russia, the two sides failed to reach any compromise. First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov, had earlier said that under its obligations Moscow has already moved all its heavy weapons including tanks beyond Ural Mountains in the East and has no right to move them into its western parts now bordering on NATO member states, jeopardising Russia's security in the new scenario. Low birth rate prompts Spain to approve child bonus
London, July 14 (PTI) As India grapples with its growing population, Spain hit by a low birth rate has come up with a lucrative offer of Euro 2,500 to the parents of every new born or adopted in the country. While India has a population of 1.12 billion with a birth rate of 22.69 per thousand, Spain's current population is estimated at 45 million with a birth rate of 10.06 per thousand, statistics reveal. The state approved the financial package yesterday to help raise the country's low birth rate, the 'International Herald Tribune' reported today, quoting the Spanish government as saying. "This is a move to boost births and support families. Spain needs more children," Spanish Prime Minister Jos Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who initially floated the idea, recently told Parliament. The one-time payment will be tax deductible and will not affect other subsidies received by parents, such as a fixed monthly payment to working mothers with children under three years of age, the government has said. Though family-support groups in the country have welcomed the move, some said the money would be better spent improving public childcare facilities and offering sustained assistance to parents. President of the Spanish unit of the Institute for Family Policies, an international organisation, Eduardo Hertfelder said, "This is an isolated measure which, unaccompanied by other measures, is not going to represent effective support for families." US-Russia panel meets in Moscow to repair deteriorating ties
Moscow, July 14 (PTI) A group of prominent US and Russian dignitaries gathered at President Vladimir Putin's countryside retreat near here behind closed doors in a bid to repair deteriorating ties between the two countries. The panel called 'Russia-USA: A Look Into the Future', led by former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former Russian premier Yevgeny Primakov, declined to comment on yesterday's session but said it was a successful beginning to a series of high-level track two diplomacy meetings. "We discussed many issues. Our goal was not to get media coverage, score public relations points, or press home any propaganda messages. We came here to solve problems," Primakov was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti. Relations between Washington and Moscow have fallen to a post-Cold War low over American plans to deploy missiles in Eastern Europe, the state of democracy in Russia and the West's resolve to grant independence to Kosovo. Kissinger praised Putin for his realistic and open approach. "We appreciate the time that President Putin gave us and the frank manner in which he explained his point of view," he said. When asked whether US unilateralism was on the agenda, Kissinger said that "nuclear proliferation" and "nuclear threats," rather than US policies, are the biggest danger to world peace. "I do not think that (US) expansion is a problem of the period. The problem of the period is how to avoid nuclear conflict and in this case we believe that Russia and America should have common objective," Kissinger said. PTI

An artist who creates art with dried flowers
New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) While the general practice is to trash away the flowers once they dry some use them dry them to create wonderful pieces of art. From trying his luck in Delhi and Nepal, doing a number of businesses, Krishna Kumar Paruthi has come a long way doing what he says is his passion- making paintings to artefacts and visiting cards embossed with dried flowers. Paruthi dries them after treating the flowers with herbal preservatives by placing them between 500 to 800 sheets of paper for a period of nearly two months with heavy pressure added onto them. "It takes around 40-60 days for the flowers to dry. After recomposing them, they are then used to design and make various products," says Paruthi, showing off his products including scented candles, wall hanging on glass and acrylic along with wedding cards among others with either roses, cosmos, marigold, pensy jipsy and foliage of plants among others pasted on them. "This is something that I was really interested in from the very beginning. Sixteen years ago, when my flourishing business in Nepal fell through, I came back here and started pursuing my art," he adds. Paruthy who now supplies his products to various star hotels in the capital among other stores says, "When I had started off initially, it was never meant to be a business. Slowly, people took notice of the art and asked me to make products for them," he adds. PTI

Gossip at funeral makes family decide to donate bodies
Ashish Mehta Jaipur, Jul 12 (PTI) It was cheap gossip at a funeral that made retired IAS officer Pukhraj Salecha make a decision he would rather donate his body for medical research. Three members of the Salecha family too shared the view and after death their bodies would be donated to the medical college. Most people do not maintain a dignified silence that is expected under such circumstances or share the family's grief but indulge in gossip. "I have seen people discussing Mallika Sherawat and her vital statistics at the cremation ground," says Salecha. He made up his mind after he returned from the cremation of a close friend. "I was shattered the way people were gossiping at the funeral ceremony. Thus, I discussed the idea of donating our bodies rather than cremating them with my wife late Rameshwari Salecha," he recalls. "I believe that everyone of us should make some valuable contribution to the society and that's what we have done," he says. "My wife too believed that it would be good idea to donate one's body as it would be useful for the medical students and service of the mankind," he adds her wish was fulfilled and her body was donated to the SMS Medical College here on June 13. When asked Salecha's 92-year-old mother Pyaari says "Jal ke to raakh ho jaungi, par aise shareer doctaron ke kya kaam aayege (if my dead body is burnt it will become ashes, this way it would at least be useful for doctors.)" Emraan Hashmi now wants to explore horror, fantasy
New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI) With the release of 'Awaarapan,' Emraan Hashmi has apparently broken out of his typecast playboy, lover image and is now looking out for roles that are somewhat different ranging from horror, to fantasy and the realm of magic. "I love horror and apparently it is a genre that has not been explored much in India. Maybe it is a risky thing to do, perhaps, that is why, I do not know," says the actor. The 27-year-old, who began his career with the film 'Footpath', had become known in the industry for his roles involving kissing scenes, particularly in the movie 'Murder' with co-star Mallika Sherawat. One of the upcoming movies of this Mumbai-based actor is a thriller the sequel to the Bhatt movie 'Raaz,' starring Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu. "People want to see something new and something more," says Hashmi. Typecast as a serial kisser and a playboy the actor seems to have finally come of age with his latest Mahesh Bhatt flick "Awarapan," where he plays a gangster who helps free a Pakistani girl from the clutches of human trafficking. Sporting straggly hair and an unshaven look the film also sees the actor depart from his earlier clean shaven and a chocolate boy image. Hashmi plays the role of a bookie in the upcoming movie 'Jannat,' whose script revolves around the sudden and mystery-filled death of Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer during the World Cup. Another film that Emraan is working on is a yet to be untitiled comedy by Feroz Nadiawala. PTI
