A scion of a rich Sindhi family, Sippy's career got a flying start with the film 'Marine Drive' (1955). The same year he produced 'Adl-e-e-Jahangir' with the star-cast of Pradeep Kumar, Meena Kumari and Durga Khote.
The fifties and sixties was a time of hectic filmmaking for Sippy, when his banner produced memorable flicks like 'Shrimati 420', 'Chandrakant', 'Light House', 'Bhai Behan' and 'Andaaz'. It stands to his credit that G P Sippy, besides producing, also directed all of these films.

Karzai set for talks with Pak leaders to check militancy
Islamabad, Dec 26 (PTI) Afghan President Hamid Karzai arrived here today for a two-day visit during which he will hold talks with Pakistani leaders on cooperation in the fight against Taliban and al-Qaeda and steps to improve security along the porous border between the two countries.
Caretaker Tourism Minister Muhammad Ali Saif received Karzai at the Chaklala airbase near here. Karzai was given a 21-gun salute while two children attired in traditional dresses presented him a bouquet.
Karzai, making his second visit to Pakistan in two years, will hold talks with President Pervez Musharraf later today. The meeting is expected to focus on bilateral relations, reconstruction in Afghanistan and the regional and international situation.
Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Sadiq said Karzai's visit was important, both politically and economically.
Though no specific agreements were expected to be signed, "all key issues" would be discussed by the two sides, he said.
Karzai last visited Pakistan in February 2006 to express solidarity with the government over the devastating earthquake of October 2005 that killed over 70,000 people.
The Afghan President was accompanied by a 50-member delegation that includes the foreign, finance and trade ministers, a few governors, the National Security Advisor, other senior officials and media and business representatives, Afghan diplomat Nematullah Mujaddadi said.
Officials said the two sides would discuss ways to improve security in their border areas as Afghanistan was of the view that suspected Taliban fighters cross into its territory from Pakistan's restive tribal areas.
Pakistan has complained that Afghan elements might be behind a series of suicide attacks in the country that have killed over 300 people this year. PTI
40 Tiger rebels killed in Lanka sea battle
T V Sriram
Colombo, Dec 26 (PTI) At least 40 Tamil Tigers were killed in a fierce sea battle in Sri Lanka' northern Jaffna coast with the Navy destroying six LTTE boats thwarting attempts by the rebels to smuggle in arms, officials here said today.
Besides, the Navy detained a "suspicious" Indonesian-registered ship with 12 crew members off the eastern coast of the island while a series of gunbattles in the country's embattled north left at least 15 LTTE cadres and one member of its breakaway faction dead.
During the hour-long sea clash southwest of the Delft Island in Jaffna, the Navy fast attack craft destroyed six LTTE boats, including two suicide craft, through which the rebels were trying to smuggle arms to Mannar in northern Sri Lanka, officials said.
The Defence Ministry quoted sources as saying that at least 40 sea Tigers were killed in the confrontation.
The Tiger had launched 15-17 boats, some carrying smuggled arms and ammunitions, the navy said adding the vessels escorted by the suicide craft were heading towards the north.
"In the eventual sea battle the Navy engaged the LTTE craft in retaliation and four attack-type LTTE boats were completely destroyed along with another two suicide craft," it said. "The augmented Air Force fire support too put the LTTE sea Tiger cadres' attempt in disarray." However, dockyard built attack craft sustained damage when LTTE's suicide craft rammed on the naval boat, the Navy said.
The pro-LTTE website 'Tamilnet' claimed that initial reports suggested that a Sri Lankan Navy Dvora Fast Attack Craft (FAC) was sunk by sea Tigers in Delft Island. PTI
Nepal may face shortage of currency notes
Shirish B. Pradhan
Kathmandu, Dec 26 (PTI) Nepal may soon face shortage of currency notes due to the suspension of the governor of the country's top bank who is facing a corruption case for financial irregularities during King Gyanendra's 14-month direct rule.
The plan of the country's national bank, Nepal Rastra Bank, to issue new currency notes of Rs 1,000 denominations has been obstructed due to the suspension of its governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai, who is facing a corruption case.
Nepal Rastra Bank has warned the interim government that it may face shortage of currency notes if the government does not make an alternative arrangement as the country is heading towards the key constituent assembly election expected to be held by mid-April 2008.
The scarcity has been accentuated as governor Bhattarai is facing a case of financial irregularities filed by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) during King Gyanendra's direct rule.
The bank has already processed its decision to print 30 million currency notes of Rs 1,0000 denomination and an order has been placed with the Indonesian security bank for the same, Bank's executive director Manmohan Shrestha told the PTI.
He said it is very urgent to get the currency notes printed if we are to avert the possible crisis.
The new Rs 1,000 currency notes will have the water mark of national flower rhododendron and picture of Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world, instead of the picture of the King and the water mark of the Crown, he said.
The Nepal Rastra Bank has recently issued new paper notes of Rs 500 denominations with the picture of Mt. Everest. But currency notes in Rs 1,000 denominations are yet to be printed. PTI
130 Indian Haj pilgrims stranded at Jeddah airport
Dubai, Dec 26 (PTI) A row over excess baggage charges by Air India has left nearly 130 Haj pilgrims from India stranded at Saudi Arabia's Jeddah airport after the flight they were scheduled to board took off without them.
"The nearly 130 passengers (out of the total 270 on Air India flight to Jaipur, the first Haj flight) are left at the airport without water or any alternative accommodation by the carrier," an Indian official told PTI over phone from Jeddah.
However, an Air India spokesman from Mumbai said since the passengers could not get out of the airport after having checked-in, they were provided lunch and dinner by the airline.
Indian Consulate officials say they have referred the matter of excess baggage charges by the Indian national carrier to the authorities in India.
Pilgrims are allowed to carry 45 kgs of checked-in luggage and 10 kgs as hand baggage free of cost, compared with 20 kgs of checked-in luggage and seven kgs of hand baggage in commercial flights. Some of these pilgrims were carrying luggage much beyond the allowed capacity, the spokesman said.
The flight left the Haj Terminal last night carrying only 140 of its scheduled 270 passengers after they raised an outcry over an excess baggage charge of Saudi Riyal 55 (Rs 581) a kilo that the airline was demanding from the pilgrims.
The spokesman said 56 of the stranded passengers were airlifted to their homes today.
Maintaining that the excess baggage charge was the standard practice fixed for the Haj flights, K M Kurian, Air India's Western Province Manager, said some of the passengers did not board the flight since they did not have the money to pay for the excess baggage. PTI
Britain in secret talks with Taliban: Report
London, Dec 26 (PTI) Britain is in secret talks with the Taliban in an attempt to instill peace in the war-torn Afghanistan, it has been revealed.
Agents from British secret service MI6 have staged discussions with senior insurgents in Afghanistan on several occasions in the recent past, 'The Daily Telegraph' reported here today.
"The SIS officers were understood to have sought peace directly with the Taliban with them coming across as some sort of armed militia. The British would also provide 'mentoring' for the Taliban," an intelligence source was quoted as saying.
The disclosure came only a fortnight after Prime Minister Gordon Brown told the House of Commons: "We will not enter into any negotiations with these people." According to the daily, MI6's meetings with the Taliban took place up to half-a-dozen times at houses on the outskirts of Lashkah Gah and in villages in the Upper Gereshk valley, to the north-east of Helmand's main town.
The compounds were surrounded by a force of British infantry providing a security cordon. To maintain the stance that Afghan President Hamid Karzai's government was leading the negotiations, "the clandestine meetings took place in the presence of Afghan officials".
"These meetings were with up to a dozen Taliban or with Taliban who had only recently laid down their arms. The impression was that these were important motivating figures inside the Taliban," the unnamed intelligence source said.
Opposition leaders in Britain have said that the Prime Minister had to respond to the report as he had pledged that Britain would not negotiate with terrorists.
"If this turns out to be untrue, the Prime Minister will have some explaining to do to the British public," Liam Fox, the Shadow Defence Secretary, said. PTI
Sensex ends 338 points up as buying gathers momentum
Mumbai, Dec 26 (PTI) The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today ended past the 20K mark, gaining 338 points as buying support gathered momentum following the government's decision to allow trusts to invest in securities.
The BSE barometer ended the day at 20,192.52, a net rise of 338.40 points or 1.70 per cent over Monday's close of 19,854.12. Reliance Industries, State Bank of India, L&T, Tata Steel, Reliance Energy and BHEL were among the major gainers.
The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also gained 85.65 points or 1.43 per cent to close at 6,070.75 from the previous close of 5,985.10 points.
The government's decision to amend the Indian Trusts Act to enable trusts to invest in securities, including shares and bonds of listed companies, is expected to further boost the stock market, analysts observed.
Operators and Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were engaged in short covering as well as rolling over positions to January series of derivatives as the current contract expires on December 27, market players said.
The market sentiment was aided by a firm trend in Asian markets while European markets were closed for Christmas.
The market-wide roll over was impressive in keeping with the trend in last four months, which have witnessed nearly 75 to 80 per cent rollover, they added.
Oil and gas, realty, PSU, metal, power, capital goods and bank shares attracted heavy buying interest. The mid-cap and small-cap shares were also in demand and scored sharp gains. As a result, their indices rose 2.5 per cent and 3.0 per cent respectively at close. PTI
Govt to allot additional spectrum based on TRAI figures
New Delhi, Dec 26 (PTI) The government today accepted spectrum review committee's recommendation of allocating additional frequency to existing GSM operators based on TRAI's subscriber linked formula and in multiples of 1 MHz.
To this effect, an affidavit would be filed in the sectoral tribunal TDSAT and Delhi High Court, where the GSM lobby has challenged the government on spectrum allocation norms, senior officials told PTI.
According to the officials, Communications Minister A Raja today signed the file and sent it to Department of Telecom Secretary D S Mathur for action.
The GSM lobby Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) had challenged TRAI's figures, saying these were not based on scientific calculation and were without consultation of the stakeholders.
Till now, the GSM operators were getting additional spectrum in the multiples of 2.4 to 2.8 MHz and lowering it to 1 MHz would hit the operators as this would mean additional capital expenditure for them.
Asked on other recommendations of the official review committee headed by R Bandyopadhyay, the officials said that a separate file may be submitted in the respective courts.
The panel had suggested that another committee be set up with technical experts to arrive at a scientific subscriber base for apportioning additional spectrum and in the interim period TRAI recommendation be implemented.
In fact, the committee was of view that the subscriber base as suggested by the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), which is higher than TRAI, could be still higher if all the parameters were taken into account. PTI

Kumble scalps Five wickets as Aussies squander solid start
Ashish Shukla
Melbourne, Dec 26 (PTI) Captain Anil Kumble led from the front by scalping five wickets as Australia squandered a flying start to allow India come back strongly in the opening cricket Test here today.
Electing to bat, the hosts got off to a solid start with Matthew Hayden (124) and Phil Jacques (66) putting on 135 runs for the first wicket but the visitors bounced back splendidly to restrict Australia to 337 for nine at close on the opening day.
The formidable Aussies threatened to seize early control of the Boxing Day Test and were cruising along briskly before the complexion of the game changed after the lunch break with the Indians ripping through the strong Australian batting line-up.
Mitchell Johnson (10) and Stuart Clarke (21) were at the crease at stumps on an eventful day watched by a seizable crowd.
The seasoned Kumble turned out to be the hero as he produced a devastating spell to pick up 5 for 84 runs, his 34th five-wicket haul to bring to help his team bounce back on a good batting track at the MCG.
Paceman Zaheer also played a stellar role by taking three wickets while fellow paceman Rudra Pratap Singh chipped in with one wicket to thwart Australia's hopes of putting up an imposing first innings total on the board.
The lanky Hayden, who has always scored heavily against the Indians, continued to torment the visitors by notching up his 28th Test century but none of the other Australian batsmen, barring Jacques, could get going against a disciplined bowling attack. PTI
Gujarat going strong, take 197 run lead in Ranji semifinal
New Delhi, Dec 26 (PTI) A fine show by their bowlers combined with a superb batting display gave Gujarat a handsome 197-run lead over Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy Plate semifinal clash here today.
After dismissing Madhya Pradesh for a meagre 93 in the first innings, Gujarat, who had scored 192 in their first attempt, reached 98 for two in their second essay at stumps on the second day.
Nilesh Modi (49) and R Tabiar (19) put on 71 for the opening stand to give Gujarat a solid start.
Modi was trapped by Sanjay Pandey, while Tabiar was caught behind off Anand Rajan.
At close, skipper Parthiv Patel was unbeaten on 15.
Earlier, pacers Amit Singh (4/31) and Siddharth Trivedi (3/25) bowled devastating spells to put their opponents on the mat. Left-arm pacer Ashraf Makda also chipped in with two wickets.
Devedra Bundela (34) waged a lone battle before being run out. PTI
Wicket will become more difficult for batting: Hayden
Melbourne, Dec 26 (PTI) The Indians may have done exceptionally well to reduce Australia to 337 for nine in the opening cricket Test but Matthew Hayden reckons the visitors will also find the going tough on a pitch that will "definitely get difficult to bat on over the next few days".
Hayden stood out among the Aussie batsmen to score a dominating 124 and gave a healthy start to his team by putting on a 135-run opening stand with Phil Jaques. But the hosts could not capitalise on the solid foundation on the first day.
"I think we've lost a few too many wickets, there's no doubt about that, but in my mind it was a difficult enough wicket and those conditions will be revealed over the next four days," Hayden said after the opening day's play.
"The fact is we are facing quite a difficult wicket. It's definitely a par effort (Australia's score), but maybe one or two more wickets down.
"I think it is going to be a wicket that will be definitely hard to score on over the next few days," he said.
Hayden said with the wicket getting slower, Australia would make life difficult for the visiting batsmen.
"They are going to be slow conditions, they are going to be challenging for run-scoring and I think you will see Australia putting the pressure with good in-out fields and really try to constrict India", he said. PTI
We are not here on holiday trip, foreign players tell Carvalho
Chandigarh, Dec 26 (PTI) Hurt by Joaquim Carvalho's allegations that the foreign imports are not showing commitment in the Premier Hockey League, the players from overseas today hit back at the Indian coach, saying they are not here on holiday trips.
After Carvalho's criticism, the foreign players exhibited commendable performances to bag 'man of the match' awards in the last three games and prove their worth in PHL.
Dutch' Oscar Ter Weeme, Korean's You Hyo-sik and Pakistan's Salman Akbar gave a befitting reply to Carvalho by playing to their potential and winning the awards.
"Without full commitment, it would have been difficult for my team to win the match. I gave my cent per cent on the field," said Salman Akbar, who helped Sher-e-Jalandhar defeat Maratha Warriors last night.
The Pakistan captain said Carvalho's comments had lowered the stature of PHL, which was doing its best to groom talents.
"We are here to play hockey and not on a holiday trip," Salman said, adding all the 21 foreign players in the league are giving their best. PTI
Guj election was fought almost like a General election
Snehesh Alex Philip
Ahmedabad, Dec 23 (PTI) The Gujarat Assembly election 2007 was fought almost like a General Election with mostly all national leaders camping in the state to address rallies, mobilise party cadres and even to organise road shows.
"This election was the most keenly fought election among all the Assembly elections in the last decade and half. Not only our country but even many other countries have been keenly following the trends in this election," a senior BJP leader told PTI.
The Gujarat election is been looked at by many as a referendum for the national politics with the speculation of General Election taking place much before the stipulated time doing rounds.
The BJP, to ensure a win had even dropped a large number of the sitting MLAs while the Congress took a considerable amount of time to come out with its list of candidates, he said.
The importance of the election can be gauged from the fact that Congress Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi spent considerable time in the state addressing rallies to organsing road shows. BJP's PM candidate L K Advani too chipped in.
While the main campaigner for BJP was Narendra Modi himself, even former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who had stayed away from active campaigning citing health reasons at the last moment also appealed to the public to vote for BJP through an ad released by the party. PTI
Big budgeted multi-star flicks dominate Bollywood in 2007
Shambhu Sahu
New Delhi, Dec 22 (PTI) The year 2007 can easily be compared to an over-budgeted multi-starrer masala flick with additional glam and spice.
However, it should perhaps be best remembered for the grand promotions with lots of hype, shocking box-office disasters, emergence of sports as a new success-mantra and an encouraging increase in children's films, besides the usual blockbusters, star break-ups and link-ups, and controversies.
We can safely start with the most noted Battle Royale between Shah Rukh Khan's 'Om Shanti Om' and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Saawariya.' While the films battled each other at the ticket window, the superstar actor and critically acclaimed director of his times fought it out off-screen.
With the promotion costs of both films breaking all the records, this sure has been the most aggressive marketing battle ever in the Bollwyood. Irrespective of who won and who lost, the fight has sure given us all a hint at how cruel the fights would be off and on screen.
Meanwhile, it is 'OSO' that's apparently having the last laugh at the Box Office. But till the film breaks all the revenue records in the coming weeks, it is yet another SRK starrer Shimit Amin-directed 'Chak De! India' that tops the list of the year's blockbusters.
It is followed by Mani Ratnam's 'Guru, David Dhawan's 'Partner,' Sajid Nadiayadwala's 'Heyy Babyy,' Priyadarshan's 'Bhool Bhulaiya.' Among other successful films include 'Dhamaal,' 'Life in a Metro,' 'Shootout at Lokhandwala,' 'Namastey London,' 'Aap Ka Surroor' The movies and others.
Here Sagar Bellary's 'Bheja Fry' needs a special mention. Just like last year's 'Khosla Ka Khosla' this film was the underdog of the year. Made at a budget of about 50 lakhs the film went and made over six crores! PTI
