India, Pak to exchange lists of their n-facilities on Tuesday
New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) For the seventeenth consecutive year India and Pakistan will on Tuesday exchange lists of their nuclear installations and facilities, a key confidence building measure between the two countries. The lists will be exchanged simultaneously here and in Islamabad through diplomatic channels under an agreement the two countries initialled in 1988. The lists included places covered under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities between the two countries signed by the then Foreign Secretary K P S Menon and his Pakistani counterpart Humayun Khan. As per the agreement, which entered into force on January 27, 1991, the two countries exchange the lists on January one every year to inform each other of nuclear installations and facilities to be covered under the pact. "It is a good confidence building measure which has been holding for the last 17 years," Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner Afrasiab said. PTI

Dhumal takes oath as HP CM
Shimla, Dec 29 (PTI) Professor-turned-politician Prem Kumar Dhumal, who led BJP to an emphatic win in the Himachal Assembly poll with his aggressive campaigning, today assumed office as Chief Minister of the state for the second time.

Governor V S Kokje administered the oath of office and secrecy to 63-year-old veteran BJP leader at a public ceremony at the historic Ridge Maidan here. A three-time MLA who headed the BJP government in Himachal for the first time from 1998 to 2003, Dhumal is the 16th Chief Minister of the state since it was formed in 1971. The former professor of English in Punjab University, who was unanimously elected leader of the Himachal BJP Legislature Party yesterday, took the oath alone amidst chants of "Jai Shri Ram". In a break from the past, the function, attended by a large number of people, was held at Ridge Maidan. Earlier, such ceremonies were held at the Raj Bhawan. BJP stalwart L K Advani, party Vice-Presidents Shanta Kumar and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Chief Ministers of Punjab, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan -- P S Badal, B C Khanduri and Vasundhra Raje respectively -- attended the swearing-in. Neither outgoing Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh nor any other Congress leader was present on the occasion. Popularly known as "sadak wala mukhya mantri" for a number of road projects he took up in Himachal during his previous tenure, Dhumal launched an aggressive campaign for the assembly poll which decimated the Congress. Samjhauta express resumes service
New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) Indo-Pak Samjhauta Express, which was suspended due to security reasons in the wake of the assassination of former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto, today resumed its service. "The service of trans-national Samjhauta Express is being resumed from today," a Railway official said. The decision was taken after consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs and railway officials of Pakistan, another official said. The bus and train service between India and Pakistan was suspended temporarily for security reasons in the wake of developments in the neighbouring country. Meanwhile, no decision has been taken on the resumption of services of Thar express. Samjhauta Express runs from Attari to Lahore on every Monday and Thursday and from Lahore every Tuesday and Friday. PTI

BJP on a "comeback trail": Advani
Chandigarh, Dec 30 (PTI) Buoyed by electoral successes in Gujarat and Himachal, BJP stalwart L K Advani today said his party was on a comeback trail as people were eager to vote out the "dysfunctional" Congress-led UPA regime at the Centre. Addressing a press conference here this evening on his return from Shimla Advani said that the UPA regime had been "dysfunctional and paralysed" for the past six months due to the internal squabbles between it and the Left, particularly on the Indo-US nuclear deal. "Earlier, I thought general elections may be held somewhere in early 2008, but after our electoral successes, the UPA may hold them later next year or early 2009," he said. Advani who had been to Shimla to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prem Kumar Dhumal as the Chief Minister of H.P., said the outcome of polls in Gujarat and the hill state will change India's political scene. "The disappointing patch between 2004-07 is over for us," he said. The Leader of the Oppostion in the Lok Sabha alleged that the Congress party and its "pseudo-secular supporters sought to convert Gujarat into some kind of national referendum on communalism versus secularism". "Gujarat elections were no ordinary elections. The way Congress pumped all its energy and money was phenomenal. They tried to divert people's attention from good governance, but ultimately they failed miserably in their effort," he said. PTI

PML-Q says polls could be postponed
Rezaul H Laskar Islamabad, Dec 30 (PTI) The PML (Q) that backs Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf today indicated that the elections could be postponed in the wake of former premier Benazir Bhutto's assassination and said the party will meet on Jan 1 to decide on contesting the vote. The PML-Q's top leadership will gather for discussions a day after the Election Commission meets to decide whether the polls should be held as scheduled on Jan 8, party leader and former minister Tariq Azim told TV channels today. "If you ask me for my personal opinion, I feel the polls should be delayed in view of the assassination of (former premier) Benazir Bhutto," Azim said. He said the PML-Q had already suspended its campaigning because of the situation that arose after Bhutto's death. The PML-Q is prepared to contest the polls even if they are held on Jan 8 "provided there is no violence and the elections are free and fair", Azim said. Steps should be taken to ensure the participation of all political parties in the polls so that the legitimacy and credibility of the election process is not affected, Azim said. He noted that Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party is currently in mourning and former premier Nawaz Sharif's PML-N had announced that it would boycott the polls. Reports have suggested that some sections of the PML-Q, particularly leaders from Sindh province which is a stronghold of the PPP, believe the party could suffer if polls are held as scheduled. PTI

Bhutto killing: Pak media refuses to believe govt version
Islamabad, Dec 30 (PTI) For the second day in a row, Pakistani media has maintained it'll not buy the government's version on how Benazir Bhutto was killed, saying the official explanation "lacks credibility and consistency". Leading newspapers in their editorials maintained that the security provided to Bhutto was inadequate and questioned why a post-mortem was not carried out on her body by the regime of President Pervez Musharraf. The Pakistani government yesterday said that Bhutto did not fell to an assassin's bullet but was fatally wounded by a lever in the sun-roof when she had ducked back into the car following the firing of a few shots at her. But, in its editorial, titled, 'No one believes the government', the 'Daily Times' said that the final version of events has not cut ice with the public for two reasons -- lack of credibility and lack of consistency. "Most people are cynical of government any way. But this regime is unpopular for a host of reasons and its credibility is rock bottom. Then there is the stupid way in which its spokesmen have gone about explaining the events of that fateful day. "The established facts are that security was weak, which enabled the gunmen and suicide bomber to come so close to Ms Bhutto and actually open fire at her from a short range, before detonating himself. And the responsibility for lack of adequate security must lie with the government, especially since she had time and again implored the government to improve it," the daily said. PTI

Prabhakaran may not survive beyond 6 months: Lanka army chief
T V Sriram Colombo, Dec 30 (PTI) LTTE Supremo V Prabhakaran will find it difficult to survive beyond six months, Sri Lankan army chief Sarath Fonseka has warned, vowing to eliminate the 3,000-strong tiger rebels from their stronghold of Wanni in the embattled north. "Security forces have occupied LTTE's Forward Defence Lines and surrounded the Wanni bases from all directions", he said yesterday after his visit to the north. "The three armed forces are confident of wiping out the LTTE, which is now smarting its wounds due to the present military operations", Fonseka, who survived an assassination attempt by LTTE in April 2006, said. "The LTTE may not be able to prevent losing their remaining 3,000 cadres and there is no assurance that outfit leader V Prabhakaran would survive for the next six months as the Sri Lankan Air Force plans to attack all the LTTE bases", he said. The Army chief said he was highly satisfied with the successes against the militants in the current year and said that the prime target of the military was to destroy the LTTE's presence in the North completely. "Our daily target is to kill at least 10 LTTE terrorists and for the last few months over 500 LTTE cadre have been killed by the armed forces", Fonseka said. "We have weakened the LTTE by 50 per cent or more and we are confident we can go that extra mile in the coming year", he said. PTI

T20 World Cup, 2 world champions make 2007 a memorable year
Amlan Chakraborty New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) As yet another rollercoaster year of heady high and abysmal low passes by, Indian sports can afford a smug smile as it looks back on 2007 when Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his band of boys brought home the Twenty20 World Cup and chess and archery threw up two world champions in Viswanathan Anand and Dola Banerjee respectively. India had its fair share of heartbreaks in the year where Rahul Dravid and Co. Were cruelly shown the door in the West Indies before the World Cup had reached its business end. Indian shooters did bag nine Olympic berths but squandered a few while ageing tennis aces in Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi returned empty-handed from wherever they went. Even Jeev Milkha Singh found the golf courses not as benign as they were last year. The setbacks notwithstanding, Indian sports can take a glass-half-full view of the year, which gave enough reasons to celebrate. It was a year when Indian cricket oscillated between beauty and banality. The country that plunged into a mass depression after their heroes were hanged, drawn and quartered in the World Cup in the West Indies erupted in unbridled joy when its next generation cricketers returned home with the Holy Grail from the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa. All hell broke loose in the Caribbean were Bangladesh scripted a stunning triumph of the minnows over the mighty Indians and Sri Lanka then buried the Indian hopes under the 22-yard strip of the Queen's Park Oval at Port of Spain. Kapur hopes to end title-drought with Royal Trophy
Bangkok, Dec 30 (PTI) All set to make his debut for Asia in the Royal Trophy against Europe, Indian pro Shiv Kapur is hoping to replicate the form which saw him launch his career in glorious style on Thai soil with the 2005 Masters of Asia. That victory came just a month after Kapur had finished runner-up in the Double A International Open -- also in Thailand -- and he rocketed from 85th on the Asian Tour Order of Merit to fourth, winning him the rookie of the year award. "Thailand seems to have been a golden thread in my career so far, and it seems somehow appropriate that I will be making my debut for Asia there," Kapur said. The 25-year-old is yet to add to that victory and is hoping to end the title-drought here. The Indian will be joined by seasoned pro Jeev Milkha Singh, who also went without a title last year. Kapur said he never expected to make the Asian team at such an early stage of his career. "It is a massive honour, and one I could not really have imagined would come my way so soon. But it seems our Asian Team Captain, Joe Ozaki, wants to have a good blend of youth and experience, and I will do everything I can to repay his trust in me," he said. Apart from Kapur and Jeev the Asian line-up will have two of his Japanese countrymen in Toru Taniguchi and Hideto Tanihara, a couple of in-form Korean aces in Charlie Wi and Lee Dong-Hwan, and the Thai trio of Thongchai Jaidee, Prayad Marksaeng and Chapchai Nirat. Problem lies in the mind of batsmen: Rajput
Ashish Shukla Melbourne, Dec 30 (PTI) Hitting the nail on the head, assistant coach of the Indian team Lalchand Rajput said the failure of the famed batting line-up in the first cricket Test against Australia was the result of a defensive mindset rather than any technical flaw. India yesterday suffered a huge 337-run defeat to Australia after the visitors were all out for less than 200 runs in both the innings of the match and Rajput said the players lacked in self-belief. "They do not have any technical problem. It's the one in the mind. They need to apply and believe in themselves. Self-belief is very important and it can help you survive in any field," Rajput said. Rajput denied that Rahul Dravid's failure in this game would prompt any knee-jerk reaction. He said the former captain could still be asked to open the innings in the second Test. "Dravid opening the innings was a team management's decision. When we come overseas we see what is best for the team. PTI

Bangalore Hi-Fliers down Shers to enter semifinals
Chandigarh, Dec 30 (PTI) Former champions Bangalore Hi-Fliers edged past Sher-e-Jallandhar 2-1 to become the first semifinalist of the fourth edition of the Premier Hockey League at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today. Hi-Fliers completed their engagements in the league winning five of the six matches and currently top the table with 14 points. Shers on the other hand remain on five points from as many matches. To make the last four stage they not only have to win their last match against holders Orissa Steelers but also hope for others to lose to make an outside entry. After a barren first half, where both the teams had an equal share of exchanges Hi-Fliers drew the first blood converting the third and last of their penalty corners. In the 47th minute the Bangalore team forced their second short corner but missed the chance with an indirect variation. However, they earned one more short corner and this time drag flick specialist Len Aiyappa sent a low flick to the right of goalkeeper Salman Akbar in Shers' goal. Thereafter, both the teams switched up gears and increased the pace of the game. Shers too showed more urgency in their moves but failed to penetrate into the circle. Bangalore custodian Bharat Chetri made a good save thwarting Sarvanjit Singh in the 52nd minute and then blocked Shers' fourth and last set-piece drill in the 58th minute saving Kanwalpreet Singh's flick and then Len cleared the ball to safety. But Shers tried desperately for the equaliser even as Bangalore midfielders fell back to assist the defence. Arjun Halappa played a good game in the midfield assisting in the front as an attacking midfielder and falling back to support the defence to cut the rival raids. PTI

Symonds may pull out of Pak tour
Melbourne, Dec 30 (PTI) Distressed by the turmoil in Pakistan following former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's assassination, Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds says he is "seriously" considering pulling out of next year's tour to the troubled nation.

"I'm not interested in going into a situation that's dangerous, where people are getting killed and hurt. There's no point in that in my opinion," Symonds was quoted as saying in the 'Daily Telegraph'. "I'm giving it some serious thought. At the end of the day, it's a game of cricket. I take my cricket very seriously and I love playing for Australia but I'm not going to put myself in a situation where I can be harmed. There's no need, not for a game of cricket," he added. Australia are scheduled to play three Tests, five ODIs and a twenty20 match in Pakistan in March but Bhutto's assassination and the ensuing violence has cast a shadow of doubt over the series. Although Cricket Australia (CA) has asserted that the tour will go ahead as scheduled, Symonds insists that players are a worried lot and in two minds about going to the sub-continental nation. "There is obviously huge concern. After stumps (on day three against India), we watched the television report in the dressing room and the entire room stopped to listen to it," he recalled. "James Sutherland (Cricket Australia chief executive) was in the dressing room talking to Ricky (Ponting). I don't know what it was about but I would say it had something to do with Pakistan." PTI

Tata would ideally like to retire after Rs one-lakh car launch
London, Dec 30 (PTI) Head of the Tata Group Ratan Tata feels that after the successful launch of his dream project -- the Rs one-lakh car-- will ideally be the nice time for him to retire from active business life, a media report said here. "In an ideal world, after the small car has been launched and is successful, that would be a nice time for me to exit," Tata told the 'Financial Times' newspaper. Tata Motors, the automotive arm of the over Rs three- trillion market value group, is scheduled to unveil the vehicle, touted as the world's cheapest mass-produced car, on January 10 at an auto expo in New Delhi. Rival car makers are, however, not convinced about the safety and emission standards of the car, coming as it is at that price level. Reacting to this, Tata told the British newspaper that "we are producing a car that will be no more polluting than a motorcycle." Tata told the 'Financial Times', which has named him among the three entrepreneurs making their presence felt around the world, "as we are not going to produce millions and millions of them, inundating the country, we will not be adding to the carbon footprint on a per-passenger basis." The report said that there was a big gap between the cost of the average two-wheeler and entry-level cars such as the Maruti 800, which retails for about 5,000 dollars, and Tata plans to fill it. "The only reason we did not make the Rs one-lakh car a hybrid, for example, is that it could not have been priced at Rs one lakh," said Tata, who celebrated his 70th birthday on December 28. PTI

GAIL plans Rs 12,00 cr Dabhol-Banglore pipeline
Shirdi, Dec 30 (PTI) The country's flagship natural gas company GAIL India today said it has plans to lay a pipeline from Dabhol to Bangalore at an estimated cost of Rs 1,200 crore and covering a distance of about 780 kilometers, a top official of the company said. The company also has plans to lay pipelines covering nearly 6,000 kilometers, at an expected project cost of Rs 20,000 crore. The Dabhol to Bangalore project is expected to start by January, GAIL Chairman and Managing Director U D Choubey told PTI here, after visiting the Shirdi-Sai Baba temple. Ratnagiri Gas & Power, a joint venture between GAIL and power generating utility NTPC owns the Dabhol power plant. The central government has already given the nod for the project, he added. Over the next five years, GAIL has plans to lay pipelines covering nearly 6,000 kilometers, at an expected project cost of Rs 20,000 crore, he said. That apart, the company has also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers to set up a gas-based fertiliser plant at Talchar in Orissa, he said, adding "the project is expected to cost about Rs 6,000 crore." Choubey also said the cities of Nasik and Pune, will soon be provided CNG, for use in industry and transport. PTI

Finance minister rules out increasing interest subsidy on crop loans
New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) The Finance Ministry has ruled out increasing interest subsidy, which at its present level of two per cent will cost the Exchequer more than Rs 2,000 crore this fiscal, given for short-term crop loans.

"There is no proposal with the government to raise the rate of subvention beyond two per cent," a Finance Ministry official said. The government has been giving subvention of two per cent with a ceiling of Rs three lakh on the principal amount of crop loans with effect from the kharif season of 2006-07. The scheme has been extended to this fiscal as well. The interest subsidy is provided by the government to public sector banks, cooperative banks and regional rural banks on the involvement of their own funds and concessional refinance to RRBs and cooperative banks through NABARD. This subsidy makes loans, which otherwise would have cost nine per cent, cheaper at seven per cent. Minister of state for Agriculture Kanti Lal Bhuria had earlier said that his ministry was trying to ensure that farmers get short-term crop loans at five per cent rate. In fact, Standing Committee on Finance has observed that two per cent subvention is not adequate, considering the requirements of the farming community. The National Commission for Farmers, headed by Dr M S Swaminathan, had recommended reduction in interest rate on crop loans to four per cent. PTI

38 top PSU executives to retire in 2008
New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) A number of top-level officers of public sector enterprises, including chairmen and managing directors of some of the most valuable state-run firms such as NTPC Ltd, are set to retire in the new year.

As many as 38 executives from 33 companies would superannuate next year. These include four managing directors and 11 CMDs (chairman and managing director). The remaining seats would be left vacant by various directors, according to data available with Public Enterprises Selection Board, the panel which conducts interviews of shortlisted candidates. The first to retire among CMDs will be T Sankaralingam, who heads the country's biggest power generating firm NTPC Ltd. T S Ganeshan, CMD of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd would quit his chair on the same day as Sankaralingam, on April 30. Besides, CMDs of Power Finance Corp and Power Grid Corp, both of which listed on the bourses in 2007, will also superannuate in 2008. Other companies where CMD positions will fall vacant include Northern Coalfields, Central Coalfields, South Eastern Coalfields and Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. CMDs of Oil India Ltd, paper maker Nepa Ltd and Manganese Ore (India) would also be making way for new chiefs to take over. Power Finance Corp's CMD V K Garg and Power Grid's R P Singh would vacate their positions on July 31. Of these 33 companies, at least 20 are in energy sector and of the 11 retiring CMDs, nine are from companies in oil, power or coal space. PTI

India, China should lead world aviation sector: IATA chief
Amitabha Roychowdhury New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) India and China, emerging as giants in the global aviation industry, need to be innovative and should not follow Europe that has been lax in introducing new rules and procedures, a major aviation body has said. India and China, which are projected to jointly control about 32 per cent of the world air traffic by 2012, "will have to be in a position to think out-of-box and take the lead in evolving new ground rules," International Air Transport Association (IATA) chief Giovanni Bisignani said. Referring to the delay of over two decades in implementing the 'Single European Sky' project that would help in checking carbon emission to a very large extent, he said "we have had enough of hot air (in Europe) -- it is time for political will and action." In an interview to PTI from IATA's Geneva Headquarters, Bisignani said he wanted India and China to lead the world by bringing in new laws and procedures to meet the emerging challenges. "The rules of the game were set almost 60 years ago. The issues relating to bilateral (air services) agreements, safety, security and profitability have undergone major changes," said the Director General and CEO of IATA, which represents over 240 airlines that carry over 94 per cent of the worldwide air traffic. "It is sad to see that if you want to start a new (international) flight, you require an international treaty that has to be ratified by respective Parliaments (of two countries). It makes no sense at all," he said. PTI

Rebels fail in Saurashtra
Parag Dave Ahmedabad, Dec 30 (PTI) The startling aspect of the Narendra Modi led BJP's win in Gujarat was failure of party rebels to make any impact in Saurashtra and Kutch in the Assembly Elections of 2007. The Saurashtra and Kutch region, the home ground of BJP rebel leaders like Keshubhai Patel and Suresh Mehta, the party not only retained its seats but increased its tally. BJP won 43 seats out of 58 assembly seats here and increased its tally by four seats in comparison to 2002. Out of the four regions of the state Saurashtra and Kutch once again proved to be a deciding factor in BJP's march to victory. Of the three BJP rebels fighting on Congress ticket in Amreli district, only one Bauku Unghad managed to win from Babra constituency. The three (Unghad, Bechar Bhadani and Balu Tanti) are considered to be close to Keshubhai Patel. The two rebel BJP MLAs of Kutch, Narendrasinh Jadeja and Gopal Bhuva considered to be close to Suresh Mehta, who had crossed over to the Congress and fought election on that party's ticket were defeated by BJP candidates. The claim of the BJP rebels that the entire Leuva Patel (one of the two sub-castes of Patels) community will tag along with them and vote for the Congress has proved wrong with the results. "We have not done any analysis of why we failed to make any impact in the election," rebel BJP leader Gordhan Zadafia, who had formed Sardar Patel Utkarsh Samiti to campaign against Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi said. Showbiz sans fizz!
Shambhu Sahu Film: Showbiz Director: Raju Khan Cast: Tushar Jalota, Mrinalini Sharma, Sushant Singh, Sourabh Shukla, Gulshan Grover and others. The film's tag line might say 'the dark side of fame', but somehow director Raju Khan ends up showing the dark side of journalism. The film explores the dark side of media houses who want breaking news and high TRPs at the cost of anything which could be, as in the film, a rising star's career or even in his life. Rohan Arya (debutant Tushar Jalota) becomes a star after winning a singing talent hunt contest, which is backed by a big TV channel. Soon, he is exposed to the stardom ka biggest side effect - paparazzi. A reporter (Sushant Singh), who aspires to be CEO of a big media house, makes his life hell by 'creating' sensational and juicy news about his affairs and his character. Just to keep a family secret he avoids media, but fails and losses trust of his girlfriend and mentor Shikha (Mrinalini Sharma), the creative head of the channel. What follows is a typical revenge drama. The film attempts at commenting on the downfall of media ethics among journalists. And it is not long before that the judiciary and senior newsmen debated over the relevance of sting operations. So the film deals with an important issue but fails miserably. The screenplay lacks intensity, which is further marred by some heartless performances by the cast. Though lead pair still needs to take off as far acting is concerned, potential actors Sourabh Shukla, Gulshan Grover and Delnaaz Paul have been wasted in the film. The characters in this story, which is a take on today's real life, are surreal. You have a recently crowned singing sensation who hardly enjoys his stardom. Instead talks of moral business and media practices. Then, you have the channel's creative-head projected as almost a grim sati-savitri who, first doesn't want to fall in love, but later cries for a talent hunt winner. You have a reporter who constantly abuses his profession and manages to do a sting on his own boss besides ruining the budding star's Career. Then you have a helpless ACP who rather functions as a peace activist. Moreover, you have rain and thunderstorm to lift some scenes. But the ancient formula of film making falls flat. Despite being from media-savvy Mahesh Bhatt's camp, media's power is depicted in unrealistic manner to create a realistic villain from our very own surroundings. Raju Khan - who began his career as an independent choreographer with the film Ashiqui and did many popular films later - couldn't even contribute a good enjoyable dance (item) number to his film. Film has music composed by Lalit Pandit (of Jatin-Lalit fame) but there aren't many enjoyable tunes except 'Meri Falak Ka'. It's a soul-less and poorly made film. PTI

100 years of Urdu literature in Indian subcontinent in English
Wasfia Jalali New Delhi, Dec 28 (PTI) As part of its programme of translating Indian literature in order to make it available to a larger section of society, Oxford University Press (OUP) in India has released an Anthology of Modern Urdu Literature covering over a period of 100 years of literary production in the subcontinent. Edited by Mehr Afshan Farooqi -- a scholar of South Asian literature, the two volumes spanning from the late nineteenth century to as late as the early twenty- first century, include in their pages translations of 130 selections in English from the works of as many as 90 authors. "The programme undertaken by us was important in our literary quest, which in many ways changed the thrust of our translation programme", says Manzar Khan, Managing Director, OUP, India. All major genres of Urdu writings -- poetry, drama, fiction and also the 'much- ignored' essays, autobiographies and letters have been included in the volumes making it one of the most comprehensive anthologies available in Urdu literature. "While involved in the business of translations, we realised that Urdu language which has touched many hearts did not have enough contemporary translations. Moreover, while works of fiction and poetry have been touched by translators, non-fiction has been altogether ignored", says Khan. Further, the publishers have made it a point to ensure that the writings included in the volumes were the ones that were hitherto not easily available in translation. "While the focus of selection is on literary excellence, translatability and relevance, an effort has been made to avoid writings easily available in translation and to include one piece per author,"says Farooqi, who is Professor of South Asian Literature at the University of Virginia. Make more women friends, live better and long: Study
Sruthi Paruthikad New Delhi, Dec 27 (PTI) A woman without confidants and friends from the same sex risk early death and are often found to take longer periods to recover from bereavement and other trauma compared to those who have a bigger group of friends. A study from the University of California says female bonding activities serve as very important stress management strategies; and they have qualifiable health benefits. The study indicates women who turn to other women for friendship lower the risk of early death, they also heal faster in times of bereavement or other trauma. Woman-to-woman friendship bonding or 'hanging out with friends' serve the purpose of filling the emotional gaps. Besides, says the study published in 'Psychological review' when women are under stress, the hormone oxytocin is released as part of the response to stress. This encourages them to seek the company of other women, and when they are engaged, more oxytocin is released, which counters stress and has a calming effect, it says. "Women are more loyal and appreciative in their relationship so they possess a tendency to be bonded with each other," says Dr Aruna Broota, a well known psychiatrist and professor, University of Delhi. She says the relationship between women will be more deep and intense than that of between women and men because they are always ready to understand and value each other. PTI
