BJP asks Centre to get terror centres in Pak disbanded
Kochi, Jan 13 (PTI) BJP today said the Centre should "gain the confidence" of the international community to carry out joint military operations, if necessary, to dismantle the terrorist training centres, believed to be functioning in Pakistan. In the wake of the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, Centre should give more emphasis on the country's security, gain the confidence of international community and if required should jointly take up military operations to dismantle the "terrorist training centres functioning in Pakistan", party president Rajnath Singh said. He was speaking at the executive council meeting of the BJP state unit here. Emphasising the need for enacting stringent laws to safeguard the country's security, Singh alleged that internal as well as external security was at stake during the UPA rule. Claiming that POTA, enacted by the BJP-led NDA had successfully prevented extremist activities in the country, Singh alleged that the UPA government had withdrawn it as part of its minority appeasement. Stating that the UPA government's foreign policy was "weak", he said the Centre had shut its eyes towards the happenings in neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Nepal. Need for third alternative outside Congress and BJP: Karat
Kolkata, Jan 13 (PTI) The country needed a third alternative outside the Congress and the BJP, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said today and called for greater unity of the Left parties towards that end. "We have a communal party like BJP on one side and a party of capitalists like the Congress on the other. We need a third alternative. This can be achieved only if the Left unity is strengthened," Karat said at an an open rally on the eve the CPI(M)'s 22nd state conference. "For this, all the left parties must unite on the lines of the one in West Bengal. While all Front partners have a responsibility towards this, CPI(M), being the largest constituent, has a bigger responsibility," he said. Accusing the Congress-led UPA government of failing to redress the problems faced by common people despite the nine per cent GDP growth, he said the Centre was indifferent to the suicide of nearly two lakh farmers over the last 10 years. The Centre was trying to stop PDS and open the retail sector to big investors. If this happens, lakhs of small traders would be wiped out, he said. "So, we are telling the government to take steps to properly implement the Common Minimum Programme. But if it tries to open the banking, insurance, agriculture and retail sectors to foreign investments, we will not agree," he said. PTI

NSG could give India waiver before March: sources
Vienna, Jan 13 (PTI) Ahead of a key meeting between India and IAEA on a safeguards agreement for the implementation of the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, the 45-member NSG is apparently optimistic about giving waiver to New Delhi before March to allow nuclear commerce with it. It is learnt that even countries like Switzerland and New Zealand, which had been resisting the move, had come around and softened their stand and in fact were working towards making a written draft on the exemption to enable trade in nuclear material and technology with India. The Nuclear Suppliers' Group members, who met here last week, were optimistic about completing the process of giving waiver to India without much opposition before March, sources said. The draft paper on exemption to India by NSG was a crucial step towards operationalisation of the Indo-US deal, they said. India has been demanding a "clean and unconditional" exemption from NSG. Meanwhile, India and the UN nuclear watchdog, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA )are working towards readying an "agreed text" of the India-specific safeguards at a meeting next week here. The Indian team will be leaving for Vienna on January 16 and according to External Affairs Ministry this consultative meeting could possibly be the final one. "(It is) Possibly the final round. The draft has to be discussed by the UPA-Left committee in India and should be ready to be placed before the Board of governors of IAEA in March," IAEA sources said. PTI

Clarke clears air with Kumble
Perth, Jan 13 (PTI) Australian batsman Michael Clarke today said he spoke to Anil Kumble and sorted out the contentious issues raised by the Indian skipper after the acrimonious Sydney Test. Kumble, in a newspaper column, had criticised Clarke for dishonesty on two counts: first for standing his ground after being clearly caught in the slips when he was yet to open account in Australia's second innings, and the other for claiming a controversial low catch in the slips to remove Sourav Ganguly on the final day of the Test. Citing the two incidents, Kumble had threatened to discontinue with a pre-series agreement between the captains to accept the word of fielders on catches close to the ground. "I spoke to Anil and he was actually very supportive and said, 'Mate I understand'," Clarke, being groomed to succeed Ricky Ponting as Australian captain, said. "We've played a fair bit of cricket against each other and he knows I'm not the type of person to try and harm the game -- that was the last thing I would want, to put the game in jeopardy." Clarke, was adamant that he took a clean catch to dismiss Ganguly but said he was disappointed to be out first ball in Australia's second innings. He said the pressure to come up with some runs after the first innings failure was the main reason behind standing his ground after being out. "The catch, still to this day, I feel 100 per cent positive I caught fairly and I told him (Kumble) that. "I said with my dismissal it was more shock and disappointment to be honest more than anything else." PTI

India have to believe that they can make a comeback: Kirsten
Perth, Jan 13 (PTI) India's coach-in-waiting Gary Kirsten today praised skipper Anil Kumble for leading by example in the ongoing series against Australia and said he would try to help the players focus on cricket after a tumultuous week in the aftermath of the Sydney Test. The former South African batsman has joined the Indian team as consultant and said the players will have to "believe" that they can still fight back, win the two Tests and level the series. "I have tremendous respect for Kumble's captaincy and he has certainly led by example, taking plenty of wickets. He said Kumble's resilient batting to save the Test will have a positive influence on the whole team. "Equally his performance in the last hour-and-a-half in Sydney was testament to his character as a person, where you could see he was desperate to save that game. I am sure he would have an influence on other players in the team," Kirsten was quoted as saying in Cricinfo website. "The important thing for me is to focus the Indian players back on cricket. I would certainly want the Indian players to play their brand of cricket on Australian soil. I don't want them to play any other brand; they must play to their strengths. I am sure they are already doing that." Kirsten, who will formally take over the coaching reins on March 1, said India wanted to level the series in Sydney and were disappointed on losing the Test after dominating the game at various stages. Anand loses to Radjabov in Corus Tournament
From our Chess Correspondent Wijk Aan Zee (The Netherlands), Jan 13 (PTI) Rude defeats for World champion Viswanthan Anand and fellow Grandmaster Koneru Humpy summed up a pathetic day for the Indians in the first round of Corus Chess tournament here. Hot favourite for the crown with his enviable record on the Dutch soil, Anand was in for a surprise against in-form Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan as the latter showcased his deep preparation and technical acumen to romp home in the 'A' group. Radjabov, along with Magnus Carlsen of Norway and Levon Aronian of Armenia, emerged as the early leaders in this category-20 tournament with victories in the opener. While Carlsen put up a fine show to beat Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan, former World champion Veselin Topalov was comprehensively beaten by Aronian. The remaining games of the 14-players' round-robin event ended in draws. In the 'B' group Grandmaster Humpy did not get many chances against Jan Smeets of Holland. Playing black Humpy slowly put on the defence of her queen side and faced an uphill task when Smeets gave two pieces for a rook. The ensuing endgame was clearly inferior and the Indian did not survive for long. Playing in the 'C' group for the third time, Parimarjan Negi was subjected to a vigorous king side attack by Pontus Carlsson of Sweden in a Sicilian Dragon defense game where the latter played black. Parimarjan decided to decline an exchange sacrifice early in the middle game and did not get a second chance as Carlsson threw his pieces at white king in tandem. PTI

Manmohan visits Olympic village in Beijing
V S Chandrasekar and Ragavendra Beijing, Jan 13 (PTI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today had a feel of China's preparations for the summer Olympics here and met an Indian business woman who has been chosen among the eight foreigners to carry the Olympic torch on Chinese soil in August next year. In his first engagement soon after a tiring overnight flight from New Delhi on a three-day trip to China, he visited an exhibition at the Olympic village showcasing the facilities for the Games to be held from August 8 to 24. "On behalf of the government and the people, I extend my best wishes for the success of the Olympics," Singh wrote after spending about 30 minutes at the village. "I hope that the Olympic spirit and the traditional hospitality and warmth of the great city of Beijing will promote friendship, peace and understanding among all the participants and the countries they represent," he said. Singh's visit to the Olympic village comes as India plans to bid for hosting the world's most prestigious sporting event in the future. It was also a proud moment for Meena Barot, who would carry the Olympic torch, as she met the Prime Minister and spoke to him. (More) PTI

Now China wants rail link with Kathmandu, supply oil
Jan 13 (PTI) Seeking closer ties with Nepal, China has said it wanted to establish a rail-link to Kathmadu and offered to supply petroleum products to the fuel-starved country. "The Chhinha -Tibet railway link will not end in Lhasa, as we have plans to expand it up to the Nepalese border," Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Cheng Xia Ling said "We are even planning to link it to Kathmandu in not too distant future," he added. China wants to establish the road links to promote regional peace and development, the Chinese envoy said in an interview to Nepal weekly, the sister publication of The Kathmandu Post. Cheng said Chinese people had an age-old dream to establish road links with South Asian countries. "We have established very good links with 14 neighbouring countries in the region and we want to give continuity to it," he said. Cheng said China also wants to supply petroleum goods to Nepal, which is facing oil crisis these days. At present Nepal receives most of its oil supply from India. "It is not an easy task to supply petrol from China as we need to cross thousands of kilometers of distance and Tibet having border with Nepal is at an altitude of 4,000 metres," he pointed out. But we are working towards developing a permanent and long term mechanism to supply petrol to Nepal from China, Cheng said.

Musharraf opposed to US-led military operations in Pak
New York, Jan 13 (PTI) President Pervez Musharraf has opposed any US-led military operations against pro-Taliban and al-Qaeda militants in Pakistan's restive region bordering Afghanistan, saying "American troops don't have any magic wands." "We are totally in cooperation (with the US) on the intelligence side. But we are totally against (a military operation). We are a sovereign country," President Musharraf said, adding "We will ask for assistance from outsiders. They won't impose their will on us." Pakistan's border region has emerged as a frontline in the war on terror after Islamabad allied itself with the Washington following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the US. The region is believed to be an operating ground for Taliban fighters planning attacks on NATO-led coalition forces in Afghanistan. US politicians have accused President Musharraf of failing to combat the threat, and pushed for a US-led military operation in the restive region. In a wide-ranging interview with the Newsweek magazine, published on Friday, Musharraf expressed his refusal to let the US launch CIA operations against the militants in Pakistan. He said if the American troops came into the mountains, "they would curse the day they came here." "American troops don't have any magic wands." Since former premier Benazir Bhutto's assassination on December 27, Pakistan has been plunged into one of the worst crises in its history, with militants showing their presence all over the country in a dangerous way. Nobody needs to tell us how to secure our N-weapons: Musharraf
New York, Jan 13 (PTI) Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has rubbished talks of its nuclear arsenal falling in the hands of the extremists, saying "Nobody should tell us what to do. They are very secure". "They (nuclear weapons) are very secure. We will ask if we need assistance. Nobody should tell us what to do. And I'd ask anyone who says such things, do you know how our strategic assets are handled, stored and developed--do you know it?" President Musharraf told the Newsweek magazine in a wide-ranging interview. Pakistan's border region has emerged as a frontline in the war on terror after Islamabad allied itself with the Washington following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the US. Scores of suicide attacks have taken place in Pakistan in recent months, including the killing of former premier Benazir Bhutto on December 27. With increasing turmoil, international experts and politicians in the US have raised doubts about the security of the Pakistani nuclear weapons. The issue has also become a major topic of debate among the presidential candidates. President Musharraf dismissed Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton's recent suggestion that the US and Britain should help Pakistan secure its nuclear weapons. "Does she know how secure [the weapons] are and what we are doing to keep them so? They are very secure. We will ask if we need assistance," the Pakistani leader told the US magazine. With regard to suggestions by some experts that the weapons must be disbursed for them to have "survivability", President Musharraf said: "We are from the military, we understand how to handle things, whether they need to be disbursed or concentrated." Decision on free-market determined petrol price by this month
Bangalore, Jan 13 (PTI) Government is expected to take a decision on the issue of a free-market determined price system for petrol, diesel, kerosene and domestic LPG by the end of this month, Petroleum Secretary M S Srinivasan said. "Government has constituted a group of ministers to go into the issues relating to price determination for petrol, diesel, PDS-kerosene and domestic LPG," Srinivasan told reporters here last night. The group of ministers is meeting on January 17 and would make its recommendations to the Cabinet, he said. Towards the end of this month, we are expecting the decision from the Government on the pricing system for these products, Srinivasan added. Earlier, while inaugurating the first retail outlet of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), at Maddur on the Bangalore-Mysore highway, Srinivasan said the Government's fear is that unless there is competition in fuel retailing space, complacency may set in. "We are for consumers. We are not for private sector or public sector. Our bottomline is consumer", he said. This underlines the need for free marketing of petroleum products and a free-market determined price so that efficiency is never given a go-by and consumers' interests are best served. There is no second opinion on this, Srinivasan added. Regarding the seventh round of New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP-VII), Srinivasan expressed confidence that global biggies would participate in the bidding process, adding, roadshows would be held in the UK, Europe, America and Canada from January 22 to February three. Imports from China rising fast: FICCI
New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) Imports from China have increased at a much faster pace than those from India's other trading partners, even as the two countries are seriously considering a market-enlarging Regional Trade Agreement, industry body Ficci has said. Discussions are likely during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's three-day visit to China from today on regional trade pact. Commerce Minister Kamal Nath is already in Beijing holding discussions with his Chinese counterpart. "India's imports from China have increased over eight-fold since 2001-02 whereas increase in our imports from the world was only three-fold during the same period," Ficci said. This has increased China's share in India's imports from around four per cent in 2001-02 to 9.4 per cent in 2006-07, while India's share in Chinese world imports continues to be an insignificant 1.3 per cent, it said. According to a FICCI study, import of air-conditioners from China has grown by 120 per cent since 2001-02 while India's total import of the item from the world grew by 39 per cent per annum. Similarly, import of transmission apparatus from China grew by 174 per cent during the last six years while those from other countries grew by 74 per cent. Two-way trade between the two neighbours stood at 24.86 billion dollars in 2006 and grew 50 per cent during January-June 2007 to 17.19 billion dollars. Imports of knitting machines from China grew by 143 per cent whereas India's total imports of the machines from the world grew by 49 per cent, the study said. "Industrial goods from China have made deep inroads in our industry. While import of the goods constituted only 1.8 per cent of India's industrial GDP in 2001-02, it constituted over 10 per cent in 2006-07," it said. PTI

Domestic institutions may put in more money than FIIs in 2008
New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) After being in the driver's seat of Indian bourses for the past 4-5 years, the foreign institutional investors may lose their dominance to the domestic counterparts this year in terms of capital inflows into the market. FIIs made a net investment of about USD 17 billion in Indian stocks in 2007, which was nearly 10 times of domestic mutual funds' net investment at about USD 1.7 billion. However with insurance companies emerging as a major investor in stocks, the total kitty of domestic institutions are set to overtake the overseas inventors by a wide margin. The FII flows have been the cornerstone of the phenomenal rise of the Indian stock markets, but domestic institutions are likely to surpass them in 2008, brokerage firm Sharekhan said in a latest report. Analysts at Sharekhan anticipate a huge corpus of USD 15- 20 billion to be invested by the insurance companies in the next two years, while the mutual funds are also likely to put in USD 5-8 billion. Taking into account both MFs and insurance companies, the domestic institutions would easily surpass the FII inflows going forward, Sharekhan report said. With huge FII inflows being a key factor behind the rally in the past few years, even a short-term flight of overseas funds have caused jitters on the bourses, given their significant holding in the free-float market capitalisation. Since 2000, FII ownership in Indian market has risen over three-fold to 20 per cent and is now nearly three times of the total holdings of domestic MFs and insurance companies, according to global financial services major Citigroup. However, with insurers upping the ante and MFs sitting on a large pool of cash waiting to find its way to the market, analysts expect FIIs' dominance to come down soon. PTI

Film Review- My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves...who cares!
Shambhu Sahu Film: My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves Director: E Niwas Cast: Nikhil Dwivedi, Amrita Rao, Lillete Dubey, Anupam Kher, Pavan Malhotra, others. 'My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves' is about a struggling hero Anthony Gonsalves (Nikhil Dwivedi), an orphan, who dreams of stardom all the time and sings duets with his girlfriend in his spare time. But besides dreaming and serving liquor at a bar, there should be something that the debutante actor should do in order to be projected as the hero in the film? So this tapori wannabe's life is woven around an underworld gang (quite clichéd) which provides score for truth, conscience and of course some 'dishum dishum' (action). As he thinks his life is set, there comes a twist. The actor is caught in a situation where he has to defend an underworld don (Pawan Malhotra ) who brought this orphan and made him a good human being despite being a criminal himself. Thanks to the trouble-at-home, his much-awaited debut in Hollywood-produced Hindi film stalled, for the time being. The second half is all about how he gets over the odds and emerges as a winner in the end. The film, made in a comedy/romance genre has a very slow narration especially in the first half, which basically deals with the hero's bindaas and dreamy tapori life. But Arshad Warsi - since his maiden film 'Tere Mere Sapne' to the latest 'Munnabhai MBBS' and 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' - has entertained us through his 'taporigiri' so much that Anthony seems to be lacking somewhere. Amrita Rao looks hot in the film but is almost wasted, as there isn't much for her to do considering her role. Actors like Anupam Kher and Vidya Shankar Paandey's potential remains unused while Pakistani actor Javed Sheikh and Pawan Malhotra are comparatively better. Though even Mithun Chakravorty, who plays a pop (Father) of a local church, is controlled throughout the film but steals the show in a few scenes. As far as director E Niwas is concerned, all those who know that he directed 'Shool' (and many actually do), keep waiting for the narration and story to get better since it starts. But the film fails in entertaining, primarily because of its script, which offers nothing new. But there are a few impressive moments like top don Anupam Kher singing songs as per the situation or one where Pavan tells his mentor Anupam that he brought Anthony to make him a 'achcha insaan' (good human being). As far as his attempting comedy and romance genre is concerned, Niwas's 'Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega' was comparatively better. Watch if for: Mithun's last five minutes show stealing act, and...! Take your pick: Rs one lakh car or Rs one lakh cocktail
New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) With valentines season just round the corner, youngsters are saving up to woo their better halves this winter. But for all those with extra cash, the season offers an alternative. Either one can now go in for newly launched 'People's car' costing just Rs one lakh or buy a drink for your lady for the same amount. Yes, a drink worth Rs one lakh. Called the "Cupid's Love Punch", it is probably the most exclusive and expensive wine cocktail available for the Delhiites launched by a leading Indian wine maker. The speciality of this drink apart from its key ingredient, Sauvignon Blanc and Peach Schnapps(Italian sweet liquor) along with orange juice and aerated drink is a diamond ring at the bottom of the drink served in an Italian crystal glass. According to ND Wines who have launched the cocktail, it is solely made for the people who are deeply in love and wants to propose to their better half in a unique way. Eyeing the Valentines season, the wine maker has also come out with cheaper alternatives like 'Soothing swig" for the 'flirtatious types' costing a handsome Rs. 20,000. If you think that was enough, there is 'Love in your prime" cocktail which cost Rs 15, 000. PTI
