Tibetan protestors barge into Chinese Embassy
New Delhi, Mar 21 (PTI) Scores of Tibetans today broke into the Chinese Embassy agitating against the crackdown on pro-independence movement in Lhasa by China.
The protestors scaled the walls of the embassy located in the high-security diplomatic area in Chanakyapuri, waving Tibetan flags and shouting slogans against the Chinese government.
Police later took into custody all the protestors and managed to bring the situation under control.
The protest took place hours ahead of the arrival in the capital of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. PTI
Advani has no regrets over remarks on Jinnah
New Delhi, Mar 21 (PTI) It was an episode that made him virtually a persona non grata in the Sangh Parivar and within the BJP and that forced him to quit as party president.
He even wanted to quit public life and opt for peace in the family.
But three years after the infamous Jinnah episode, senior BJP leader L K Advani says "I have no regrets" on references about the secular nature of Mohammad Ali Jinnah which he quoted from late Sarojini Naidu's speech.
Writing under the chapter "I have no regrets" in his memoirs 'My Country My Life', Advani recalls the political storm that was generated by his remarks in Karachi during his visit to Pakistan in 2005.
"I could well understand if some ordinary people had felt surprised and even upset, at seeing headlines in TV news bulletins or newspapers that said: 'Advani calls Jinnah secular'.
"But what pained me is that some people thought I had committed a serious ideological heresy even before acquainting themselves with full facts and background information," he writes.
Advani recaptures the turmoil which forced him to resign as president of the BJP. "It would not be an exaggeration to say that I was upset," he notes. His resignation was, however, not accepted by the party's Parliamentary Board.
He withdrew his resignation but Advani recollects that the turbulence did not end there.
"One day, in the middle of 2005, I was told that I should step down from presidentship of the BJP by the year-end after the conclusion of the party's ongoing silver jubilee celebrations," he says. PTI
UPA should fight next LS polls collectively: Pawar
New Delhi, Mar 21 (PTI) NCP, a key constituent of the UPA coalition at the Centre, today proposed that the entire alliance, comprising a dozen parties, should "collectively" fight the next Lok Sabha elections.
"Our desire is to contest elections with Congress. We feel the UPA should collectively fight the elections as UPA. We will prefer to fight along with UPA partners throughout India like we do in Maharashtra and Goa," Agriculture Minister and NCP President Sharad Pawar said during an interaction with PTI journalists.
Pawar's remarks assume significance against the backdrop of his meeting with Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackarey at the latter's residence sometime ago and his presence at the function where BJP leader L K Advani's book was released in the capital on Wednesday.
He categorically rejected the possibility of going with the BJP and suggested that nothing should be read in the saffron party giving outside support to the coalition government in Meghalaya in which NCP plays an important role. PTI
CPI national meeting to review UPA policies
Hyderabad, Mar 21 (PTI) A critical review of the UPA government's policies covering political, economic and international affairs and strategies to build a third alternative are set to dominate the proceedings at the CPI's national Congress beginning here on March 23.
The CPI would also chalk out plans to strengthen the party in northern states so that it could play a greater role in national politics.
"While we review the performance of the UPA government in various spheres, the question of withdrawing support does not arise at this stage," party general secretary A B Bardhan told reporters here today.
The five-day long, 20th National Congress would deliberate on a plethora of issues including Indo-US nuclear deal, economic policies, price rise, agricultural policy, women reservation and social security for unorganised workers.
Accusing the UPA government of failing to check the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, Bardhan said his party would launch a mass movement over the issue after the party Congress.
The Left parties, he said, were keen on building a third political alternative based on a common programme through people's struggle.
"A mere coming together of some political parties at the time of elections does not immediately make third front. It has to emerge through common peoples struggles," Bardhan said. PTI
Tirkey wants three-month break from hockey
Chennai, Mar 21 (PTI) After the doomed Olympic qualification campaign, veteran Indian defender Dilip Tirkey wants to take a break from hockey for three months to recover from an ankle injury and decide his future.
The former national skipper has requested Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) president K P S Gill that he may not be considered for assignments during this period.
The 30-year-old defender will thus miss the four-nation tournament in Australia next month when India will be pitted against the hosts as well as Korea and China.
India is to play another four-nation tourney in Dublin in June.
"Since I am recovering from an ankle injury, I have today requested IHF president and the team management not to consider me for a period of three months, by which time I will be fully fit," Tirkey told PTI.
The veteran is still undecided as to how long he will continue in the game.
"As far as my future goes, I will decide after due consultations with the Federation," he said. PTI
Dhoni, Harbhajan clear fitness test for SAfrica Test series
New Delhi, Mar 21 (PTI) Ending the speculation surrounding offspinner Harbhajan Singh and ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's fitness, the Cricket Board today said the duo has recovered from injuries and would be available for the three-Test series against South Africa starting next week.
While Harbhajan was nursing a left hamstring injury, Dhoni was recuperating from a sprain in the fourth finger of his right hand picked up during the tour of Australia.
However, both of them today cleared the fitness test conducted by physiotherapist Paul Close in Bangalore.
"As per the report both the players have recovered from injuries and passed the required Physical Fitness Test and both are available for South Africa Series," the BCCI said in a statement. PTI
Jeev tied 9th, SSP fumbles in WGC-CA opening round
Miami (USA), Mar 21 (PTI) Jeev Milkha Singh fired a steady opening round of four-under 68 to be tied ninth but compatriot SSP Chowrasia fumbled in his WGC-CA Championship debut and went two-over 74 to be tied 63rd here.
Jeev began with a birdie and signed off with a bogey. In between, he dropped two more shots on the third and seventh holes. But on the other side of the ledger, he birdied the fifth, eighth, 10th and 14th, also squeezing an eagle at the par-four sixth hole to save his bacon.
Chowrasia, however, had no such luck and the Kolkata pro managed just two birdies, both on the front nine, against a bogey quartet to drop down the leaderboard.
Indian-born Swede Daniel Chopra was tied 45th after kicking off his campaign with a level-par 72.
The PGA Tour regular, who learned the basics at Delhi Golf Club, slotted four birdies, which were eventually cancelled out by a couple of bogeys and a double bogey on the fourth hole.
Former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy and European Tour regular Miguel ngel Jimenez blasted identical opening round of seven-under 65 to share the top spot, with American Stewart Cink breathing down their neck from one shot behind.
At tied fourth was Tiger Woods after a sedate round of 67, a card that included seven birdies and two bogeys. PTI
IPL may lead to change in dates of proposed Pak-SL series
Karachi, Mar 21 (PTI) BCCI may have promised that the Indian Premier League would not interfere in teams' international commitments but the cash-rich Twenty20 venture has had an impact on the proposed one-day series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Sources close to top PCB officials told PTI that the two boards had come under pressure soon after PCB Chairman Nasim Ashraf announced that Sri Lanka had confirmed touring Pakistan for the series.
It was learnt that the tentative dates were set for April 23 to May 5 after Sri Lanka end their tour of the West Indies on April 15.
The sources disclosed that IPL officials have conveyed to PCB that as their league is due to start on April 18 and several Pakistani and Sri Lankan players were signed on to play for franchised teams, their non-availability would affect the multi-billion dollar event.
"The message from the IPL was loud and clear that they would not like to see the top Pakistani and Sri Lankan players absent from the first part of the IPL tournament," the source told PTI.
PCB's Chief Operating Officer Shafqat Naghmi, without mentioning IPL, said the series dates were not final as some details and issues had to be worked out.
Top players like Shoaib Akhtar, Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Asif, Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir, Kamran Akmal, Kumar Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Mahela Jayawardena, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Dilhara Fernando have signed on to play for the IPL. Sensex ends week 5 pc down
Mumbai, Mar 21 (PTI) Stocks: The stock market benchmark Sensex tumbled to end the week below 15,000-point mark for the first time in more than six months amid indications of high volatility in the coming days.
The market is expected to witness high volatility in the last week of March due to the expiry of derivative contract on Thursday, March 27.
In the brief week of three sessions to March 19, a string of bad news from the global market like Bear Stearns being bought by JP Morgan for a paltry sum of less than Rs 1,000 crore forced investors desert the bourses. This was despite the US Federal Reserve cutting interest rates and announcements of favourable results by two US investment banks.
Bear grip was so strong that the Bombay Stock Exchange 30-share barometer, Sensex, logged its second biggest fall of over 951 points on Monday mainly on fears of more worldwide casualties due to resurgence of US credit problems.
According to dealers, buyers were unwilling to make any commitments on fears of consistent slide in share values due to unending sub-prime mortgage related problems.
The prime factor for the sluggish trend was sustained pullout by Foreign Institutional Investors from equity markets. They have pulled out nearly USD 3.5 billion in the current year so far.
The BSE barometer moved in a range of 15,465.81 and 14,677.24 before ending the week at 14,994.83, a steep fall of 765.69 points or 4.86 per cent over last weekend's close of 15,760.52. The level was earlier seen on August 29, 2007. PTI
Gold recovers moderately, silver continues to decline
Mumbai, Mar 21 (PTI) Gold prices recovered moderately on the bullion market here today on renewed stockists buying at current level despite lower New York advices.
Silver, however, dropped further on persistent selling pressure from stockists on the back of weak global trend.
Standard gold (99.5 purity) firmed up by Rs 35 per ten grams to Rs 12,110 from Rs 12,075 yesterday.
Pure gold (99.9 purity) also moved up to Rs 12,170 from Rs 12,135 previously.
Gold futures fell sharply in New York on Thursday as the dollar rose and funds kept liquidating long positions, but the selling seemed to be dissipating by the end of the trading session.
April gold fell USD 25.30 to USD 920 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Funds continued selling gold for a second day after a less-than-expected rate cut kept supporting the US dollar, a dealer said.
Comex May silver fell USD 1.595 to USD 16.85 an ounce.
Turning to the local market, silver ready (.999 fineness) dropped further by Rs 215 per kilo to Rs 22,675 from the previous closing level of Rs 22,890. PTI
Severstal to acquire Sparrows Point from ArcelorMittal
New Delhi, Mar 21 (PTI) Russian steel giant Severstal today said it will acquire ArcelorMittal's Sparrows Point mill in the United States for 810 million dollars.
"The transaction reflects a significant strategic opportunity to add complementary assets and scale to Severstal's existing US business," the company said in a statement.
Sparrows Point, a fully-integrated steel mill based in Baltimore, Maryland of the US, has a capacity of 3.6 million metric tons of crude steel and shipped 2.3 million metric tons of finished steel products in 2007.
It is the only integrated producer of flat rolled steel on the US East Coast and is a major North American supplier of tin mill products.
Severstal expects to realise significant business improvements and synergies at Sparrows Point in conjunction with a five-year investment program at the plant, it said.
The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2008-09, subject to customary closing conditions, including approval by the United States Department of Justice.
India's Essar Steel was earlier reported to be in the race to buy the plant, which the US Department of Justice ordered ArcelorMittal to divest as part of anti-trust concerns related to tinplate production in the eastern United States. Evraz Group SA and OJSC Novolipetsk Steel were also considered to be in the fray.
"With Sparrows Point, Severstal brings into its US portfolio an asset with significant existing value as well as unlocked growth potential," Severstal CEO Alexei Mordashov said. PTI

PPP faces Sunday deadline to name PM, differences remain
Rezaul H Laskar
Islamabad, Mar 21 (PTI) Faced with the Sunday deadline, the Pakistan People's Party today said it will announce the name of the new prime minister this weekend as senior party leaders continued to wrestle with differences on the issue over a month after the parliamentary polls.
PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar told reporters that the name of the party's nominee for premiership would be announced either on Saturday or Sunday.
President Pervez Musharraf yesterday summoned the National Assembly on March 24 to elect the new Prime Minister. The National Assembly secretariat has said nominations for the post will have to be filed by 2 PM on March 23.
Babar had said earlier that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the 19-year-old son of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto who was made chairman of the PPP after she was assassinated in December last year, had come to Pakistan from Britain, where he is studying at Oxford, to name the candidate.
But differences in the party on who should lead the coalition government continued with vice chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim, once a frontrunner for the post until he was sidelined by PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, saying he had suggested a formula to Zardari to resolve differences over choosing a nominee.
Fahim, who has refused to drop from the PM race, said he was aware that Zardari, Bhutto's widower, was finding it difficult to decide on a nominee.
"I know he (Zardari) is in a little problem about deciding the nominee for prime ministership (and) I have given him a two-point formula. It is a very easy formula and if he works on one of these two points, the problem will be resolved," Fahim told reporters shortly after his arrival in Karachi. PTI
Bangladesh asks foreign diplomats to respect its sovereignty
Dhaka, Mar 21 (PTI) Bangladesh has asked foreign diplomats not to "interfere" in its internal affairs, days after a top US envoy held a series of meetings with senior leaders of major political parties here.
"There has been a renewed perceptible tendency on part of some foreign diplomats to make remarks in public that a section of the media has perceived to be interference in Bangladesh's internal affairs," a foreign ministry spokesman said last night.
Foreign Adviser of the interim cabinet Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury earlier yesterday said Bangladesh believed in friendship with all countries "but friendship and interference are two different things." "Bangladeshi people are in charge of shaping their own destiny," he said.
Chowdhury said his comments were not directed to any particular case but the government reaction came days after US charge d'affaires Geeta Pasi's series of meetings with senior leaders of major political parties.
The New Age newspaper today said Washington in recent weeks "once again became active in the country's politics" as Pasi expressed the US views that dialogues between political parties and government were important to establish an atmosphere conducive to holding the general elections.
Pasi held meetings with top leaders of the Awami League of detained former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Jatiya Party of ex-president HM Ershad, the reformist faction of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party of detained ex-premier Khaleda Zia and fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami.
Envoys of several other countries, including Britain and India, had also said earlier that they expected the elected leaders to take the charge after credible elections within the stipulated timeframe. PTI
Security tightened along Nepal-China border
Kathmandu, Mar 21 (PTI) In the wake of growing anti-China protests here following pro-independence demonstrations in Lhasa, the Nepal government has tightened security along the border with the Communist nation to prevent possible attempts by Tibetans to illegally enter the Himalayan country.
The district administration office in Mustang beefed up security in the Lomanthang border area, also a famous tourist spot in northwestern Nepal, an official said.
Tibetans used to enter Nepal illegally through Lomanthang earlier and therefore the border security was tightened, said Chief District Administrator of Mustang, Pradipraj Kandel.
During yesterday's anti-China demonstrations held near the United Nations' Office building here, 87 Tibetans were briefly detained, according to police.
There have been regular demonstrations in Kathmandu since the March 10 riots in Tibetan capital Lhasa that left at least 13 people dead.
The US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on the Nepal government to cease "arbitrary arrests and use of excessive force" to silence the Tibetan protesters, activists and journalists.
In a statement yesterday, the HRW also asked the government here to reaffirm its commitment to freedom of association, assembly and expression.
Meanwhile, Nepalese police arrested three Chinese nationals from different parts of Kathmandu yesterday for allegedly posing as dentists.
They were arrested as they were treating people despite entering the Himalayan country on tourist visas, police said. PTI
Its not only Bips,Bollywood is bowled over by Bangla music too
Amit Das
New Delhi, Mar 21 (PTI) Its not only Bengali beauties but the Bengali rock and fusion music too is catching the fancy of Bollywood music directors but some bands feel their compositions are being 'lifted', leaving them in limbo.
Rabindranath Tagore's compositions have always been popular in the tinsel town but now with the growing popularity of Bengali rock and fusion bands, this genre of music from the region also seems to finding favour from bollywood music directors.
While composers like Shantanu moitra are still successfully using Rabindra Sangeet in films like "Parineeta" and "Lage Raho Munnabhai, the new age composers like Pritam Chakrabarty are ripping in Bengali rock to cater to the changing taste buds of bollywood music aficionados.
"Bangla band music has now become a mainstream entertainment form. We strike a chord with the youth and progressive thinkers. Industry has accepted bands as a genre in itself. It gained recognition in Kolkata in the 90's and now even bollywood has also woken up," says Vikram Banerjee, guitarist of 'Krosswindz', the band which originally released the song, "prithibi ta...", which was later adapted as 'Na jane koi...' in Anurag Basu's 'Gangster'.
Pritam, who has so far composed two Hindi songs based on Bengali rock music, is also upbeat about the trend.
"People are enjoying the music and now even many band singers are also singing in Bollywood. For example, Rupam, the lead vocalist of Fossils, a rock band in Kolkata has sung a song for my upcoming film, Jannat," he says.
However, there are some bands who feel let down. PTI
Art, the safest investment on long term basis, say experts
Snehesh Alex Philip
New Delhi, Mar 20 (PTI) With volatile markets being the trend and interest rates low on return, art seems to have come back as the safest investment option for many, says leading art curators and investment analysts.
"Art is the only commodity other than gold which is constant in giving steady returns from the very beginning. Art can make its own money over a period of time," says Neville Tuli of Osian, one of the largest art auction houses in the country.
"This means, art should not be taken as a short investment of just few months. Give it some time and this does not mean lifetime but at least around three years. It will give you good returns," he adds.
While paintings were earlier bought because of interest in such forms of art, experts say that many are now coming forward for just pure investment purposes.
"If you pick out good paintings and study their progress in the last few years, you will find out that they have given very good returns. In some cases, certain pieces of art has given 100 per cent returns and more," says Minal Vazirani of Saffronart, an auction house cum gallery.
Agrees, S Kalra, a leather exporter who regularly invests in art. "I had a Rameshwar Broota's painting with me which I had bought for a very small amount in 2000. I sold the painting in 2004 and it gave me a return of around 75 per cent," he says.
Though Kalra did make a decent profit, he ruefully adds, "I should have waited a little longer. The same painting would have given me more than 100 per cent return now." PTI
I want to make movie on my dreams: Jhanu Barua
Soma Chakraborty
New Delhi, Mar 19 (PTI) Following the footsteps of the legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, ten times national film award winning director Jahnu Barua wants to make a film based on his dreams.
"Just like Kurosawa, may be someday I will also give shape to my dreams in the form of cinema," says director Jhanu Barua of 'Maine Gandhi ko Nahin Mara' fame.
Kurosawa's 'Dreams' (1990), which was a much critical acclaimed movie, was based on eight of Kurosawa's dreams. The movie dealt with subjects including terrors of childhood, parents who are as Olympian as gods, the seductive nature of death, nuclear annihilation and environmental pollution.
"My dream", Baruah says, "is to make northeast an united and a peaceful region." Though he admits it to be a difficult one, but he says, "my experiences of life has made me realise that nothing is impossible." "I am a dreamer and I considered myself to be a lucky one," he says.
The turmoil through which the northeast is presently going can be ended, feels Barua.
"All the human tragedies which the region is facing at present can be avoided. We should learn from our mistakes and stand together without losing one's identity," says Baruah.
Terming Northeast as the "best socio-cultural" part and the people there as "most humane", the filmmaker says, "leaving behing all the differences, the northeast should compete with the world as one united team." PTI
Manipur may re-impose Armed Forces Special Powers Act
Imphal, Mar 18 (PTI) Alarmed by heightened militancy the Manipur government has warned that it may re-impose the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act in Imphal municipal area if the law and order situation did not improve.
The AFSPA (1958) was withdrawn from seven assembly constituencies in municipal area following a series of agitations after the alleged rape and killing of a Manipuri woman Th. Manorama by security personnel in 2004 although the Act is still in force in remaining 53 assembly segments in the state.
"The government may even go to the extent of recommending re-imposition of the AFSPA in the seven assembly segments in the municipal area," Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh said recently.
"If such incidents like the bomb attack on the Manipur assembly continue, there is no guarantee that the APFSA 1958 (which empowers security personnel to 'shoot any suspect even causing to the death') would not be re-imposed in the Imphal municipal area," Sing said.
Official sources say there has been sharp increase in the activities of the different militant groups particularly in four valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishenpur and Thoubal in the past some weeks.
They say looting, kidnapping for ransom, extortion, killings of persons by militants have shown increase in recent weeks.
Manipur was also cut off from the rest of the country for about a week early this month as transporters cancelled all passenger bus services between Manipur and neighbouring states protesting against huge extortion demands by some militants.
Some militant outfits allegedly were demanding between Rs 500 to Rs 1000 per month per shop. PTI
Not much knowledge about classical music among young:Manna Dey
Bangalore, Mar 21 (PTI): The doyen of Hindi film music, Manna Dey has lamented the lack of knowledge about Hindustani classical music among young singers and said that some obsecne songs made a mockery of music.
"Music is not totally out. While some have awareness and knowledge in general, it is lacking among the young singers of today", he told PTI.
"There is no knowledge about swar (notes), laya (tempo) and tal (rhythm) among young singers. For this it is necessary that they are guided and trained by good masters",he told PTI.
Manna Dey said good film music is an amalgamation of lyrics and melody. "Obscene songs like Choli ke peeche kya hai make a mockery of music itself", he said.
Reflecting on the Hindi film music scenario, he said the fifties and sixties was the golden era of music, while the early seventies had melodious music. The 1998-2008 period saw a lull, but some composers are now making good songs, he said.
"Among young singers, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan are good", he said.
The 89-year old singer said he still practices for two hours daily. "I also believe in good health and being physically fit". PTI
Soha to be show-caused for getting gun license while underage
Gurgaon, Mar 18 (PTI) Actress Soha Ali Khan, daughter of former ctricketer Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, faces trouble for her father allegedly using a gun issued in her name to kill a black buck near here with the Haryana authorities deciding to issue her a show-cause on the charge of violating the Arms Act.
The actress was issued the gun license in November 1996, when she was only eighteen-years-and-one-month-old, whereas the minimum age limit for getting a gun license is 21 years, Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Gupta said.
The show cause will ask her how she obtained a gun license when she was still underage for it, Gupta said.
Gupta said the file containing documents related to the issuance of the license to her were also missing from government records and added that an FIR would be lodged against unnamed persons in this regard.
He said Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi took the permission for carrying .22 bore rifle no. 91501 "as retainer" on January 7, 2000 for which license was issued to Soha.
Mansur Ali Khan had allegedly used the same weapon in June 2005 for hunting down and killing a black buck in Jhajjar district, said the official. PTI
Three Bollywood films among high grossers at the box-office
Prasun Sonwalkar
London, Mar 17 (PTI) Three Bollywood films grossed three million pounds in box-office collections last year, according to industry figures.
Indian films Om Shanti Om, Namastey London and Partner are among the foreign productions that are increasingly collecting large sums in Britain, according to the Film Distributors Association.
For several years now, Bollywood films have figured in the Top Ten blockbusters in Britain as Indian producers increasingly use British Asian diaspora themes, locations and production facilities.
The UK is seen as the world's number one market for Bollywood productions outside India. DVD distributors also cite a growing interest in foreign language films from UK audiences.
The Film Distributors' Association said the growing popularity of foreign films reflects an "ongoing process of sophistication" and is helping to bolster already rising UK cinema revenues.
In 2007, there were 525 new film releases in the UK from at least 49 countries, according to the association.
There have also been UK audience gains for less-established exporters, including Romanian cinema with the recently released backstreet abortions drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. PTI
