Sonia attacks Advani and BJP
Baneshwar-Dham (Rajasthan), Apr 3 (PTI) Congress President Sonia Gandhi today questioned BJP leader L K Advani's statement that he was not not aware of the decision to send his cabinet colleague Jaswant Singh on the plane with dreaded terrorists to Kandahar and wondered whether he was not trusted by the then prime minister on the issue. "Now the then home minister of NDA says he was not not aware of it (Jaswant Singh accompanying terrorists). If he was not not aware of it, why did this happen? "What are we to understand? That the NDA Prime Minister did not not trust him. Why so,?," she asked at a public meeting on the banks of the confluence of rivers Som, Mashi and Jakham in Dungarpur district during a short visit to this pilgrim centre for tribals. Picking on the contradictory statements from the NDA camp on the issue, Gandhi referred to former defence minister George Fernandes' statement that Advani was in the know of the Kandahar decision and asked why the then external affairs minister Jaswant Singh has "not not broken his silence". "Who is speaking the truth and who is not not. Why are they hiding the truth?," asked Gandhi, whom Advani met on the day of 'Holi' and gave her a copy of his recently-published autobiography in a meeting that was meant to bring a thaw in their relations. Attacking the BJP, the UPA chairperson said BJP talked about nationalism and terrorism but did not not anything about it. "I want to know which party pandered to terrorists and sent them away to Afghanistan. It was not not the UPA but the BJP."(More) PTI

NCP accuses Congress of minimising allies
New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) Causing a flutter by its demand for projection of Manmohan Singh as the next Prime Ministerial candidate, a combative NCP today attacked Congress accusing it of "minimising" its partners. In the severest criticism of the Congress by any ally in the last four years, NCP General Secretary D P Tripathi charged the party leading the UPA with not following the coalition dharma. "The government functions according to the coalition dharma but the same is lacking within the UPA," Tripathi, who is also the chief spokesman of the Sharad Pawar-led party, told reporters here. NCP, which shares power with the Congress in four states, said it felt that there was a need for a third front but was quick to add that it would back "secular forces" to keep communal parties away from power. This is not for the first time that the NCP has targeted Congress and it had reminded the grand old party sometime back not to treat the UPA as its "fiefdom." "The Congress party has shown neither generosity nor magnanimity towards its allies," Tripathi said alleging that instead of attacking the opposition parties, the Congress was trying to "minimise its allies." Asked whether it had raised the matter with the Congress, he said the NCP has been making demands through "various modes", including the media but has got no response. "She is an educated woman and she should be able to get the message," Tripathi said to a question concerning Congress President Sonia Gandhi. PTI

CPI(M) to launch determined battle against BJP-RSS
Coimbatore, Apr 3 (PTI) The six-day 19th Congress of the CPI(M) concluded here today with a call from newly-elected General Secretary Prakash Karat to launch a "determined battle" against the communal forces and to prevent India from becoming a "junior partner of US imperialism". The major Left party also decided to "immediately" start work on forging a 'third alternative' distinct from the BJP and the Congress. "This Party Congress has reiterated that the fight against the communal forces led by the BJP-RSS will be conducted determinedly. We are ready to take up the challenge," Karat said at the concluding open session of the Congress soon after he was re-elected for the second three-year term. A day after the attack on its Pune party office, the CPI(M) leader said: "you have seen how RSS is targeting our party, attacking our offices and killing our supporters. This is because the CPI(M) is the most consistent opponent of all forms of communalism. Our entire party will go into battle against the communal forces." Announcing that the party had charted out its political line for the next three years, Karat said: "we affirmed that our struggle against neo-liberal economic policies and for alternative policies will be carried forward with renewed vigour." On foreign policy issues, he said: "we would like to tell the ruling classes or whoever is in power at the Centre that the people of this country will not allow India to become a junior partner of US imperialism." Eleven of a family sentenced to life in prison
Jaipur, Apr 3 (PTI) Eleven members of a family, including three women, were sentenced to life imprisonment by a fast track court here today in connection with the murder of a man in a village near here last year. The fast track court of Justice Madan Lal Bhati convicted the eleven of murdering Nanagram of Nayala village in April last year and sent them to life in prison. Those handed life imprisonment include the victim's cousin and the main accused in the case Ramchandra, Prakash, Jagdish, Rajpal, Govind, Gulzari, Santosh, Umrao and three women Kamla Devi, Kaushalya and Punni Devi. Nanagram (45) had died of injuries inflicted upon him by the convicts who had badly beaten him up over a property dispute on April 19, 2007, Additional Public Prosecutor Gangaram Chandana told newsmen. Steyn guns down India for 76, South Africa in command
S S Ramaswamy Ahmedabad, Apr 3 (PTI) India's much-vaunted batting line-up was blown away for an embarrassing 76 well inside the first session and their spineless capitulation allowed South Africa take the driver's seat in the second cricket Test here today. After Indian captain Anil Kumble won the toss and decided to bat first, the Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera witnessed an abject batting surrender as the hosts were shot out for a dismal 76 runs in just 20 overs well inside lunch with only Irfan Pathan (21 not out) and MS Dhoni (14) managing double-digit scores on day one of the Test. Dale Steyn (5-23) and Makhaya Ntini (3-18) breathed fire on a wicket that had a tinge of green on it but certainly no demons to justify the stunning batting collapse. In their reply, South Africa overcame Harbhajan Singh's three-wicket burst to finish the day at a comfortable 223 for 4 to take a 147-run first innings lead. Jacques Kallis (60) and AB de Villiers (59) were in the middle when stumps were drawn. Anil Kumble's side suffered the ignominy of being the first Indian team to be shot out before lunch on the first day of a Test. The star-studded batting line-up lasted just 109 minutes, second-shortest in terms of overs after India's infamous 'Summer of 42' collapse against England at Lord's in 1974 in bowler-friendly conditions. On that occasion, India's second innings lasted 17 overs, three less than today's. The paltry total was India's lowest at home against the visitors and their second-worst ever after the 75 made against the West Indies at Delhi in 1987. PTI

PCB defends ban on Akhtar
Karachi, Apr 3 (PTI) Under pressure to reconsider its five-year ban on fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, the PCB today defended its decision saying ball tampering, doping scandals, abusing officials and brawls with team-mates were linked with him. The PCB's disciplinary committee chairman Lieutenant General (retired) Muneer Hafeez said banning Akhtar was a difficult but the right decision and there was no "ulterior motive" involved in it. "I can tell you with all honesty that there was no ulterior motive involved in the ban. It was a situation where we had to decide how much longer could we allow Shoaib Akhtar to keep on violating discipline and work ethic," Hafeez said. "For years now, he has been violating team ethics and discipline. For years now, he has been challenging authority and defying the management," Hafeez, who had recommended the severe sanction against Akhtar, said. "There have been numerous incidents of fitness problems and breaking down in matches and tours. The ban is not just for giving statements against the policies of the Board but for other violations as well," Hafeez said. He pointed out that Akhtar's two-year probation for hitting Mohammad Asif with a bat made it incumbent on the committee to take some action against him. "The fact that he was also under a two-year probation and he accepted this condition last year when he was banned for 13 matches and fined 3.4 million rupees made it incumbent on us to take some action," Hafeez added. Carvalho & Co face sanction for violating FIH code of conduct
New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) In a scathing attack on Indian coach Joaquim Carvalho and his support staff for criticising umpires at the Olympic qualifiers in Chile, the International Hockey Federation today warned that their "utterances are under review" and may invite "sanctions." Irked by the Indian Hockey Federation's poor handling of the affairs and their criticism of umpires and the FIH for the men's team's failure to qualify for the Beijing Olympics, the world governing body said non-adherence to the code of conduct might land "persons concerned" in trouble. After the Santiago debacle, IHF President KPS Gill, Carvalho and other support staff started a blame game, holding FIH and poor umpiring responsible for the Indian team's defeat. Carvalho had even blamed the Tournament Director for visiting the team hotel in the middle of night to reprimand a player -- Gurbaj Singh. FIH official Bob Davidzon, also the Project Director of 'Promoting Indian Hockey,' ridiculed the Indian coach suggesting that he should know the rules of the event and try to be disciplined. "It is in the power of the manager to agree with the Tournament Director on a time and venue to have the compulsory 'reading out' of sentences to the players involved in an incident and that does not have to take place 'in the middle of the night.'" Davidzon said in a statement. He said Carvalho and his support staff might be punished for lashing out at tournament officials and violating the FIH code of conduct. PTI

Markets extend gains, Sensex up 82 pts
Mumbai, Apr 3 (PTI) The markets remained positive with the benchmark Sensex closing the day higher by nearly 82 points, though investors looked cautious as fears of a recession in US strengthened and on domestic front many expect further monetary measures to tame the rising inflation. The Bombay Stock Exchange 30-share index settled the day at 15,832.55 points, a net rise of 82.15 points, or 0.52 per cent, over its last close. The key index breached 16K mark to touch the intra-day high of 16,002.73 at mid-session but pared the gains to end lower. The broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also advanced by 17.40 points or 0.37 per cent to close at 4,771.60 from its last close of 4,754.20. Investors looked cautious due to an anticipated negative impact on the companies' fourth quarter earnings from their forex derivative transactions last fiscal after the new accounting norm were introduced, market players said. They said the market drew support from firm Asian cues but increased possibility of a recession in US amid continued credit crisis remained a cause of concern for the market. The market was constantly under pressure because of reports that IMF has hinted a downward revision of its January growth forecast for the US while the Federal Reserve publicly said for the first time on Wednesday that a US recession is possible. Indian bourses, however, underperformed their Asian counterparts. Asian indices ended up 1.0 to 3.0 per cent. Sensex shares such as RIL spurted by 2.14 per cent, Wipro by 5.04 per cent, Infosys Tech by 2.68 per cent, Satyam Comput by 5.11 per cent, TCS by 4.13 per cent and Hind Unilever by 3.20 per cent. Infra sectors growth moves up to 8.7 per cent in Feb
New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) Core infrastructure industries' growth accelerated to 8.7 per cent in February 2008, reviving hopes that industrial production would speed up and arrest an economic slowdown. Growth in coal, power and cement, three of the six industries that make up the core infrastructure sector, aided the healthy growth in February as compared to 7.6 per cent a year ago. These industries, including steel, crude petroleum and petroleum refinery products, carry 26.68 weightage on the Index of Industrial Production. Hence, they could influence higher industrial growth and in turn GDP expansion, although Asian Development Bank has projected the Indian economy to moderate to 8 per cent this fiscal from 8.7 per cent in FY'08. However, in April-February 2007-08 period, infrastructure growth remained lower at 5.6 per cent compared to 8.7 per cent a year ago due to less than five per cent growth in the four preceding months this fiscal. The infrastructure sector had grown by a poor 4.2 per cent in January 2008. In February, coal industry growth improved to 11.7 per cent from 6.5 per cent, power to 9.6 per cent from 3.3 per cent and cement to 12.4 per cent from 5.8 per cent. However, crude oil dropped to 2.3 per cent in the month under review from 4.9 per cent in the same month last year, petroleum refinery products to 5.8 per cent from 11.3 per cent and finished steel to 8.2 per cent from 13.6 per cent. On sequential basis this fiscal, the infrastructure sector growth more than doubled in February from a mere 4.2 per cent in January.

Swedish AWACS aircraft built for Pakistan rolled out
Islamabad, Apr 3 (PTI) The first of the five Swedish airborne early warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft being built for Pakistan has been rolled out and will be delivered to the country by next year. In a statement issued today, the PAF described the rolling out of the Saab 2000 Erieye aircraft before Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed in Sweden as a "major landmark" in its airborne early warning programme. "The acquisition of airborne early warning capability by the PAF would greatly enhance its defensive capability and is an essential part of its modernisation efforts," Ahmed said. He added that the achievement of airborne early warning capability will provide a much needed boost to Pakistan's security needs. Swedish defence major Saab will deliver the first of five airborne early warning and control system aircraft to Pakistan by next year. After being rolled out in Sweden, the first aircraft will be prepared for flight trials by the yearend after being equipped with a full suite of mission systems, including radars and avionics. The aircraft will be put through trials before being delivered to the PAF. Pakistan signed a contract with Saab for the AWACS in June 2006 and the aircraft have been specially developed to PAF's requirements. The aircraft will also be equipped with electronic surveillance support systems for intelligence gathering and a full set of defensive aids. The project merges Saab's 2000 turboprop aircraft with Ericsson's Erieye radar system. Pakistan is also negotiating with China for acquiring additional AWACS. PTI

Tibet to be reopened to foreign tourists from May 1: China
Raghavendra Beijing, April 3 (PTI) China today announced that Tibet would be reopened to foreign tourists from May one, weeks after its capital Lhasa witnessed violent anti-government protests spearheaded by monks. The riots that broke out first in Lhasa and spread to other Tibetan-inhabited areas in neighbouring Sichuan and Gansu provinces have left 20 people dead and over 700 injured. China poured troops into the trouble-hit areas and kept Tibet out of bounds until last week when it allowed a select delegation of journalists followed by diplomats on government-controlled trips. The Tibetan regional government had stopped issuing tourist permits to foreign travellers on March 16 and recommended Chinese travel organisations to postpone tour plans after the March 14 riots that China has blamed on the Dalai Lama, living in exile in India. The Tibetan leader has denied the charge. All travel agencies would be allowed to arrange tours, and independent travellers would also be welcome, the official Xinhua news agency quoted the region's Bureau of Tourism deputy director Zhanor as saying. The government had not imposed a ban on travels to the region but suggested travel agencies to suspend organising tours to Tibet following the riots, Wang Songping, deputy director of the regional tourism bureau said. Tourism facilities around the Jokhang Temple had suffered considerable damages in the riot, "lowering the reception capability," he said. PTI

Mukherjee, Qureshi discuss dates for first meeting
Islamabad, Apr 3 (PTI) External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his new Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi today discussed the possibility of scheduling their first meeting to review the fourth round of the Indo-Pak composite dialogue process. Qureshi stressed the "need and importance of peace and stability in the region for the common benefit of the peoples of the two countries" when Mukherjee telephoned him to felicitate him on assuming office. The Minister thanked Mukherjee and noted the improvement in bilateral relations and confidence-building, said a statement from the Foreign Office. Qureshi also said Pakistan was "proposing dates for holding the review meetings of the fourth round of the ongoing composite dialogue between the two countries". He added that he looked forward to welcoming Mukherjee to Pakistan for the review meeting. Mukherjee also condoled the death of former premier and Pakistan People's Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in December last year. Qureshi is a senior leader of the PPP, which heads Pakistan's new coalition government. Seeking "just and equitable" resolution to the Kashmir issue, Qureshi said yesterday that his country wants friendly relations with India and noted that there are "signals of reciprocity" from the other side. Regional and economic security, national defence and the "just" resolution of the Kashmir issue will be among the top priorities of his Ministry, he told a TV channel. PTI

Rezaul H Laskar Islamabad, Apr 3 (PTI) Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf will pay a six-day state visit to China from April 10, his first foreign trip since the new coalition government took over, during which several bilateral agreements are expected to be signed. New Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar will accompany Musharraf during the visit. It will also be the first trip abroad by the new Ministers. Though Musharraf is going to China to attend a meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), he and the ministers are scheduled to meet the top Chinese leadership, including President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. Musharraf will address the inaugural session of the BFA, which will be held in the seaside town of Boao in Hainan Province during April 11-13. Both countries are expected to sign several cooperative agreements during the visit, official sources said. Besides regional and bilateral issues, the two sides will review trade and business ties, they said. Musharraf is visiting China at the invitation of President Hu and the trip is "part of regular high-level interaction between the two countries and reflective of close bilateral ties", said a statement from the Foreign Office. "The President and the Chinese leadership will review the entire gamut of our bilateral relations and discuss regional issues and international developments," it said. PTI

Court summons Sanjay, Manyata on April 15
Mumbai, Apr 1 (PTI) Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and wife Manyata have been directed by a local court to appear before it on April 15 in connection with an undertrial's application stating the couple's marriage was illegal. Dutt's lawyer Satish Maneshinde told the court today that the couple did not come as they were not served the summons and so they be exempted today, adding the two will appear on the next date. Meraj Rehman, an undertrial in custody for sending obscene messages to bollywood actresses, has claimed that Manyata was married to him and they have not yet divorced in accordance with laws. As such, she is still his wife and her marriage to Dutt is illegal. Manyata in her statement to the police accepted that she was married to Meraj but claimed that they were divorced. However, the court had earlier taken cognizance of the complaint and asked Dutt and Manyata to appear before it today. PTI

Vote bank politics fosters illegal migration into NE: Book
New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) Outwardly secular, politics in India is all about vote banks and keeping a party in power. No wonder the problem of infiltration of illegal migrants remains unresolved, threatening to snowball into major crisis, say intellectuals from the North East. 'Voice of Assam,' a collection of writings of 25 distinguised litterateurs fear a situation was developing which may lead to a major ethnic conflagration. As a result of infiltration "few districts of upper Assam coming together and raising a demand for another separate state free from the domination of Muslims fundamentalists, cannot be ruled out," says the book. The writers warn that unabated infiltration of illegal Bangladeshi migrants is turning the secular society of Northeast being divided into "religious, linguistic and tribal segments at the state and administrative levels, ostensible on the ground of opposing seccessionism and aversion to party politics." The book blames the vote-bank politics, both at the regional level and at the centre, for the situation. "Each political party of the state, national or regional, has fallen victim to the 'Vote-Bank' politics which has so far proved to be the main hurdle against fighting the ever-growing menace of infiltration," says the book 'Voice of Assam,' edited by Satish Chandra Chowdhury and Harendra Kalita. The problem is likely to overwhelm the entire northeast and her indigenous people in not too far distant a future, it warns. (About the book: Voice of Assam, Publisher:Assam Sahitya Sabha, Edited by:Satish Chandra Chowdhury and Harendra Kalita, Price: Rs 200)PTI

Indian middle class leading a selfish life, says Aruna Roy
Sabi Hussain New Delhi, Apr 2 (PTI) She felt disempowered by the 'selfish' and 'worthless' ways of India's burgeoning urban middle class. It were the rural and urban poor, who taught her the true meaning of life. Unlike the upwardly mobile upper middle class, the much neglected Indian backward class which struggles for a daily living knows better how to lead an enriched and harmonious life, believes Magsaysay awardee and eminent RTI activist Aruna Roy. "India is today running on two different tracks followed by the backward class and the middle class. The former made me understood how to make your life better enriched and harmonised, while the latter only taught me how to make life worthless and selfish," Roy told PTI. "India's backward class, which has always been neglected and considered as socially irrelevant has empowered me and taught me how to struggle in life, while the middle class disempowered me with its urbanised thoughts," she adds. Roy, who is known as one of the pioneer figures to have advocated that RTI and NREGA be made a law, reiterated her view that women in India have always been subjudicated and urged the government to immediately bring in the "Women's Reservation Bill". "In our country, women have always been devoid of rights. All political parties should make a consensus to pass the 'Women's Reservation Bill' in the parliament so as to strengthen women power and to redefine democracy in India," she says. She also added that society needs to change its perspective on women, which is still under the grip of gender discrimination and considers woman as a liability.

Empowering women, forty-one stories captured in reel
Ruby Nanda New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) Mukhtar Mai from Pakistan, who was brutally gangraped but fought valiantly for justice, sums up the need for empowering women with the words "when one woman speaks, two others can speak up too." The story of Mai told in a Pakistani documentary was among the seven, five minutes films screened at the British High Commission here recently at the India launch of 'Why Women Count' a selection of 41 documentary films by women from an equal number of countries around the world. "Women's empowerment is a jargon which is used liberally but seldom understood. These films give a snapshot of what empowerment or disempowerment really means," says Jenny Richards, Deputy Director, TVE, an NGO that helped found the Broadcasting for Change Network, a group of international producers and broadcasters, who produced the short films. Poojita Chowdhury, the sole Indian entry tries with her documentary to explore the truth in the villages of Punjab. "My film is an exploration of 33 per cent reservation of women in Panchayats. Critics say it is useless as the women sarpanchs act as dummy candidates for their husbands or male relatives", says Chowdhury. When asked on the specific reason for choosing women from Punjab. "I choose the State of Punjab as it is prosperous yet it has the highest rate of female foeticide cases in India," she explains. The film depicts three women village sarpanches and their small steps into the political arena. The social prejudices are very well brought out by the documentary yet there is also male support from colleagues who are happy to work under a woman leader. PTI

Industry worried as pirates dish out better quality CDs, DVDs
New Delhi, Mar 31 (PTI) Nothing new if someone says that pirated versions of 'Race' or Hollywood's 'John Rambo' can easily be picked up from the grey market at much lower price than the original that would take time to hit the market. What is worrying the industry now is that the pirated versions now come on good quality DVD's or CD's. Though piracy has always been the bane of the entertainment industry, recent trends show that unlike earlier, the pirated DVD/VCDs are of the highest quality rather than shot clandestinely in a movie hall. In some cases, like Hollywood films, they hit the streets even before the movie has been formally launched in the country. According to a report by US-India Business Council (USIBC), the Indian media and entertainment industry worth close to USD 6,500 million is losing a little over USD 4,000 million per year due to piracy. Bollywood actor-director, Aamir khan calls piracy as the 'greatest concern'. "The greatest concern facing us (entertainment industry) is piracy. It is sad that India is not doing enough to check piracy," he said recently. "We have been aware of this problem for long but we have not done anything much to keep it in check. A lot of time and money is spent into making a film...," Aamir adds. Though Aamir's directorial debut 'Taree Zameen Par' was a runaway success both critically and commercially, he says, "There were more than 100 websites through which one could easily download the movie for free. This is part of the piracy ring." Though the entertainment industry is looking for ways to fight piracy, the black market does not fear much. PTI
