Lucknow, Mar 17 (PTI) Brushing aside the opposition outcry, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today displayed brazen defiance again by getting herself garlanded with currency notes valued at Rs.18 lakh.
Even as the controversy triggered by the garland of Rs.1,000 notes worn by her on Monday raged across the political spectrum, Mayawati appeared at a meeting of her party leaders here and put up a defiant show.
Parliament was rocked by the issue on Monday and Tuesday with BSP's opponents disrupting proceedings and demanding action against Mayawati. The Income Tax department also said it would probe the issue.
As a fall-out of the controversy, Karnataka BSP spokesman Y N Sharma, who on Monday disclosed that it was a garland of currency notes, was today sacked from the post. He said he was being made a "scapegoat".
New Delhi, Mar 17 (PTI) Tamil Nadu government today urged
the apex court to recall its earlier order constituting an
empowered committee to review the safety aspect of the
Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala.
Justice D K Jain, heading the five-judge Constitution
Bench which passed the order, however, said he would need to
consult the other judges before passing any order on Tamil
Nadu's plea.
The judge pointed out that the earlier order constituting
the empowered committee with former Chief Justice of India A S
Anand as its head was passed with the consent of the two
states and as such he needs to consult the other members of
the bench on the state's recall plea.

The gold rush started early for the Indians when Olympian Dinesh Kumar (81kg) got a walkover against Scot Callum Johnson, who was declared medically unfit due to a right wrist injury this morning.

In contrast, the 2008 champion Royals have lost both their matches so far and losing Graeme Smith and Dmitri Mascarenhas has further depleted the Shane Warne-led outfit.

that rules her out of action for the next five months, ace
forward Mamta Kharab today alleged that Hockey India has
dumped her in her hour of crisis, not even bothering to
inquire about her health after the operation.
Mamta, who suffered a knee injury at a training camp in
Bhopal and underwent a major surgery in Mumbai last week, is
almost certain to miss the World Cup in Argentina and the
Delhi Commonwealth Games later this year.
More than the surgery, Mamta said, it was Hockey India's
apathy which pained her more.
"I got injured during an evening practice session and a
MRI on left knee confirmed damage to the cartilage. I had gone
through the surgery under the supervision of Dr Anant Joshi,
who has advised me complete bed rest.

Washington, Mar 17 (PTI) The International Monetary Fund

2010-11, though high inflation and rising fiscal deficit would
continue to remain areas of concern.
"With India's long-term prospects remaining strong and
private sector balance sheets sound, we expect growth to be
back at potential in 2010-11 even if advance economies grow
below trend," IMF said in its latest paper issued after
consultation with Indian authorities.
The Fund, however, forecasts a moderately lower growth
rate for the 2011-12 fiscal at 7.7 percent.
For the current fiscal, the fund said the economy would
grow by 6.7 per cent, much lower than the 7.2 per cent
projected by the Central Statistical Organisation.
The major areas of concern, according to IMF, are the
rising inflation and high fiscal deficit. "On the downside,
the main risks are elevated inflation and financing
constraints...

enter the banking space. Gopalan was talking to the media on
the sidelines of a Ficci seminar on microfinance here.
