Top: Other write-ups

I posted a query on the nukkad list asking if anyone had any historical data on how the city's various areas and suburbs got their names (original question).

There were a number of responses to the message. Here is what we have so far. If you have any details about other parts of the city, please write to us.

Various *devi's (Gamdevi etc.) named after the godesses of local temples
Pydhonie, is where people washed their feet before entering the Fort through Church Gate or one of the other gates.
Vile Parle Two possible options:
  • There used to be two villages name Vidle and Padle. (Last e to be pronounced as in Virdhe.) The station was midway between them. So the anglicised name Ville Parle.
  • Ville Parle, literally "House of Parle" i.e. the Parle factory.
Bori Bunder It was a fishing harbour where lot of zyziphus (bori) trees were there.
Churchgate The Bombay fort had three gates. One near the Church used to be known as Churchgate. Hence the name. (Other two gates were on the road that goes from Churchgate station to Hutatma Chowk and further.)
Bandra was Vandora. It was anglicised to Bandra.
Thanks to Satya and Mr. Vilas Virdhe for the above information.
Ghatkopar the original settlement were on the "ghats" in that area....hence the name ghatkopar. meaning "On the hills".
Thanks to Mr. Harsh Patel for this information
If you have information on any other suburbs or parts of the city, please write to us.
