[nukkad] 4 years old today!

The great time-sink also known as 'nukkad' was created today (April 21)
in 1997. Has it been four years already? Wow!

Some 'nukkad' history: The mumbai-central.com site was over 6 months
old then and the only interactive section was the message boards.
(http://www.mumbai-central.com/mboards/). The message boards were
web-based which was a problem for a lot of people in India who had
either email access only or lynx-based web access. I figured a mailing
list was the perfect way to add interactivity and allow people world-wide
to keep in touch.

The list was originally called 'bindaas' to reflect the classic 
Mumbaiyaa/Mumbaikar attitude. However, I changed it to 'nukkad' to 
reflect what it actually was - a meeting place for friends. I also 
briefly considered calling the list 'gazaali' - a Goan word for 
chit-chat (I think). I realised that I would be forever
explaining the rationale behind the name and decided to stick with
bindas/nukkad instead.
 
There were no messages on the list for the first few months. People 
were signing up all the time but I wasn't sure how to kick-off the
list. Finally in June 1997, someone posted a message asking for info
about the Juhu area since he was moving to Mumbai.  That started a 
discussion which lead to other conversations which go on to this day.

The list has grown a lot since then. Its nature has changed too.
It has changed from an unmoderated list to a lightly moderated one.
The people on the list, you, have always been fantastic. I am really, 
really glad to be a part of this wonderful group of people.
