[nukkad] Some info from the city

Hello people,

>From Srikant:

You've heard about roads, food, shopping, etc., etc. Here's something
you never expected : waste disposal.

You guessed right; that means all the sewage that we conveniently
forget about. Called by a better name, marine outfalls, are supposed
to discharge the city's sewage into the sea. Now, there are two major
points where this is done : Bandra and Worli. For a city of Bombay's
size, the quantity to be dumped is also understandably large. So
recently, a project has been planned, and this one thankfully has a
deadline.

The two outfalls at Bandra and Worli are to discharge sewage about 3 km
away from the coast. Together they would cost 459 crore Rs. This is
part of the Bombay sewage disposal project (BSDP). The BSDP also aims
at providing toilet blocks for slum-dwellers.

For those of you who really want the tiny details, the two marine
outfalls will handle 1,490 m litres of sewage daily. Work commenced in
Oct 95, has picked up recently, and will end in Feb 98 and Apr 99 for
Worli & Bandra resply. And finally, there are only a handful of cities
in the world having such disposal systems : Boston, Hong Kong and
Sydney.

The postings will be a bit spread-out from now, i.e. almost once a week,
in accordance with suggestions from some of you.

Srikant.
