[From Srikant]
Dozens of surveys have been carried out on introducing
another means of transport to ease the congestion in the
city. Some of them have no doubt been implemented, but
the traffic situation worsens at such a rapid rate that
nothing seems to help.
The overhead rail and the metro rail, seen in most western
countries have been proposed in Bombay. After many
surveys (which started more than 20 years back), it was
recently concluded that the overhead rail would not be
feasible. This is mostly because of lack of space on the
roads to build the supporting structures.
So, that left the metro rail as the only option. This mode is
very expensive as tunneling has to be done without much
disturbance to overhead traffic. Plans are being drawn up
to introduce the metro rail in two or three different sections
of the city, like : Bandra-Kurla,Colaba-Churchgate-VT, etc.
It looks like the first one which may come up will be the
Bandra-Kurla line, because of the Bandra-Kurla complex.
(more about the Bandra-Kurla complex in another posting)
Finally, the existing rail and the metro system would be
linked at major points. That would be really nice.
But, until work really starts, nothing can be said.
Have a nice day.
Srikant.
