Just heard on the news that there was another incident of police firing
in India, this time in Gujarat. Reuters reports that four people were killed
in this case.
The reason stated is "Police opened fire at a crowd trying to force
shopkeepers to pull down their shutters in response to a general strike call
by upper caste groups."
This reason sounds even more mundane than the one for last week's firing.
Didn't the police force in other parts of the country learn anything from
the mistakes of Bombay police (no rubber bullets, no water hoses etc.) ?
While I am usually critical of things like "sensitivity training", I think
it is becoming a must for the law-keepers. If not anything else, the police
must be trained to shoot in a non-fatal manner. Hope the people in power do
something, anything before another such incident occurs.
Saddened,
