[nukkad] Education reform in the city

[ From Srikant ]

Hi! If you're wondering whether something happened to me in the recent
riots, dont worry. I'm fine, but couldn't mail you because of server
problems here. This might last another week or so. But anyway, here's
another posting:

Schools in Bombay, or Mumbai have been forced to adopt techniques
similar to the others in the country. But now, the people in the
University have woken up, and suddenly there seems to be an educational
revolution. There has been a law passed that school bags must not weigh
more than a specified amount.

Exams for standards I and II have been scrapped completely. Students
in these classes will be assessed qualities like participation,
capability to understand and apply and so on. A welcome relief, no
doubt. All this currently applies to Maharashtra state only.

There's a great new school coming up at the Bandra-Kurla complex. This
school will be equipped with 4-5 computers per class, slide projectors
and other modern stuff. Class strength will be restricted to about 40
students.

The educational revolution has really begun. It will take some time
before the current pattern of SSC and HSC exams is changed, but its
coming.

There was a lot of fanfare here for the 50th year of independence. VT
station (now CST - Chathrapathi Shivaji Terminus) was brightly lit up
and lots of moving electric lights like on shops during Diwali. And
Independence Rock at Rang Bhavan was great yesterday. There are shows
today and tomorrow also.

A very happy 50th year of independence to you.

Srikant.
