Almost all messages that say "this is not a chain letter" are just that -
hoaxes that waste resources around the world.

They depend on the innate goodness of people and the ease of sending a
message to a large number of people to propogate a myth. 

Please take a couple of minutes to verify the information (the American 
Cancer Society has a web page at <http://www.cancer.org/chain.html> denouncing 
this particular story) before forwarding such pleas for mass distribution.
The page at <http://www.nonprofit.net/hoax/hoax.html> has some good advice
on how to deal with a hoax.

P.S. Also, please don't send virus warnings (all fake) and chain letters
(with "good luck" totems or anything else) to this or any other list.
