[nukkad] On Hiroshima

Today August 6, is the 56th anniversary of the world's first atomic
bomb attack.

Here is a poem by Sanjeev Naik titled 'Never again'. You can find more
his poems (including a sequel to this one) at:
http://www.mumbai-central.com/likhaai/snaik/

For the hibashukas and for those men and women everywhere that had the
chutzpah and temerity to stand up and fight against the inhumanity of
nuclear weapons and war. More power to them!

1.
Sunrise, August 6th
Walking to the Buddhist temple
Suddenly, ricefields on fire

2.
Waking to ma's song
The cicadas abuzz
And then.. silence

3.
"Early morning wartime routine"
Half a million dead in seconds
How does one survive Hell?

4.
Nagasaki, August 9th
Hell burneth over.
Again.

5.
Immersed in the horror of death
Dangling skin, severed limbs
Branded for life in the burning wind

6.
Burning light, intense heat
Vaporized people - their torment
singular.

7.
Little Boy, Fat Man
Interesting names for Evil Incarnate
How men hide their inadequacies!

8.
Sans light in their eyes
or words to express - in silence,
the hibashuka survive.

  Sanjeev Naik
  June 9th, 2001
  Niagara Falls, USA.

[Written while reading the book, "With Hiroshima eyes : atomic war,
nuclear extortion, and moral imagination" by Joseph Gerson]

Note: In this poem, I wanted to bring forth the horror of nuclear
warfare in short terse terms. There is not much that needs to be said
or can be said about some things. But lest we forget, there needs to be
an effort made to remind ourselves about this - else we risk believing
the George Bushes of the world that we need "weapons to keep the
peace"!! The haiku-like (No.. not using a 5-7- 5 haiku syllaballic
rigor here but using the "style" by having short terse sentences and
sharp imagery here.
