CAMEL BOYS OF DUBAI - more

OF THE BOY AND THE CLIME:
* the boy is 4 to 6, with an average weight of 40 LB
* in case he increases in wt he is starved or give low cal food
* the camel trainer speaks only Arabic because he is Baddu
* the boy speaks whatever was mother tongue and no Arabic
* the boys are housed on the field, which can daunt a Spartan warrior
* in summer the temperature can rise to 115 in the shade, 120 outside
* the bivouck is rudimentary and houses multiple boys at a time

EVERYONE KNOWS:
* once the dallal has departed with his dirhams the child is on it's own
* the embassy concerned knows, the police know, the expatriates know
* at the races the boys stuck precariously on the rump are in full view

THE RACE:
* the jockey has very little control because camel is maddened
* it is infuriated before the race and runs because it wants to run away
* it can and often does bite anything in site, the boy if he can be reached
* often the boy is encased in a jacket and velcroed to the camel's saddle
cloth
* there is no reins, tether, handhold, the boy being bound on to the beast
* once the boy is tied thus, it can be an hour or more before the race
starts
* once mounted he is basically forgotten, frightened, thirty and crazed
* often the child urinates from fear, of the beast, and of the harsh keepers
* no one visits, there is no mail, no calls, the child is virtually lost to
the world

CASUALTY:
* often the child slips and falls from a racing camel and is mauled
* as often he is contused and battered by the cruel position
* long term psychological and emotional trauma is profound

IMPRISONED:
* the child is really a prisoner by consensus of shaikh, embassy and cops
* the only way out of the dilemma is when the child is injured beyond repair
* or falls seriously sick and may die or cause a spread of infection in camp
* or the child is crippled, gains weight or grows older than 7 years

ILL TREATED
* the child is often beaten, cursed, maligned and demeaned to break the
spirit
* if the child outlives it's usefulness a dire fate awaits him

RAPE:
* the boy runs an ever present risk of sodomy which can become rape
* rape may often be ongoing and by multiple ravagers
* sodomiser can be the Arab keeper, his help, other males, older boys

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE:
* STD is likely, though there is no real record because of collusion
* in case it is reported it is likely to be named as something else
* the Infectious Disease unit is not going to go on a limb
* this is because an image must be kept and the doctor is expatriate

WHAT CAN BE DONE?
The Emirates are very phobic of the image they have in other Arab
and Moslem countries, and in the West.

They are somewhat sensitive to Indian Embassy officials because
these are, though nepotised, can be unseated once government turns.

The best bet is job-conscious babus in Emirates:

Indian Embassy in UAE
email - indiauae@emirates.net.ae

PO Box 4090 Abu Dhabhi UAE

ph: 666 4800 - fax 665 1518

Another place they may listen is in Dubai Municipality:
email - info@dm.gov.ae

ph: [+ 9741] 221 5555

By Arab law the sponsor which is the shaikh is responsible
for whatever happens to the child. If he dies the relatives
can technically ask life for life.

Less dramatically, the Embassy can, if that is the popular
demand, ask for blood money in case of death in lieu
of life for life. In case of illnesses and trauma, there is
a lesser amount which can be claimed.

If enough people write or call, the child can get as much as
US $ 5000 to b paid into an account on it's behalf as a trust
which ripens at 25 and meanwhile renders interest for the
child's upkeep.
