My dear Indian Rediff,
You describe yourself as a pensive Indian. A better description would be a
questioning Indian; you have asked 29 questions in a lesse number of lines
of text. Please excuse me for saying that even a better description would be
a ridiculing, sarcastic Indian. I do not wish to enter into debate. I had
posted my views a few days earlier regarding the unique character of our
country, beset with myriad problems, many not of its own creation, managing
to rumble along the path of democracy despite all odds. I feel apalled by
yor statement,"Is there anything to be happy about? Is India really better
off as an independent country? Do we deserve our democracy and freedom ?" I
feel almost sickened. I have been abroad many times. I did not bother about
my US immigrant visa that I got in 1973, though i applied for it because
many friends were applying. Believe me, I have never regretted my decision
to stay in India. All humans are good, all nations are good. I have nothing
personally against USA, though i do not agree with many aspects of their
life and policy, some of which you yourself have described. They are great,
but we are not bad because they are good. It beats my senses to hear someone
ask, that too on the independence day, whether we are really better off as
an independent country. I pray to god that he may guide you. But, without
offending you, let me add that if you are happier in USA and do not find
India worth its democracy and independence, please do not come back. The
remaining billion plus would not much miss a disgruntled soul. [Let me
assure you that if this mail was written not by you but my son, who is in
Bay area, my response and advice about not returning would have been exactly
the same as above].
