HAIR-RAISING FACTS

1. Hair is made of keratin, a protein. Keratin is present in skin also. Hair
is modified skin.

2. Colour of hair depends upon the pigment present. Black colour is due to
melanin pigment.

3. Scalp hair grows half an inch a month and its life is 3-5 years. There
are 1-1.5 lakh hair in scalp.

4. Man is one of the most hairless mammals.

5. Hair serve the following purposes in mammals: protection from heat;
camouflage; sexual recognition and attraction among members of a species; as
a sensory organ in in the form of vibrissae or whiskers in nocturnal animals
like cat.
