As soon as you install Netscape and bring it up the FIRST time, you will be asked whether you want to make it the default browser. Answer yes and your wish will be granted.

HOWEVER, there is one caveat. If you wish to guarantee that this is not changed surreptitiously on you, here is what I would do. Immediately after doing the above, close Netscape and Bring up IE. This time IE will complain that it is not the default browser and ask you TWO questions in ONE dialog box. Be VERY careful how you answer these. The language herein is HORRENDOUS. 

You will see a Check Box - which will be checked off. The check box will say 'Always perform this check when starting IE'. Make sure that you UNCHECK this box. 

The question in the dialog box will be 'IE 5 is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?' The answer to that is the NO button.

IE will come up. Simply close it for the last time. You will never be bothered by IE again. 

But, just for safety's sake, I would leave IE lying around on my PC. I have seen many sites that are not just 'optimised' for IE - but actually built ONLY FOR IE. I make it a practise to boycott such sites.

You will also have avoided fiddling with the Registry.
