I believe that Ganapati at every home is an older tradition than the one started by Tilak.So nothing wrong with it.In fact the Sarvajanik Ganeshotasv mandal some time create more problems like extortions .Sometime Dons used them as a mean to gain respect.I have seen many Hindu homes where they keep Ganapati at home , and it seems to be a more sincere approach.
Both ways are good as long deep within your heart you feel good about it.As Arya says, the God is within us.
