Rituals may condone killing, maiming, subjugation and torture, all in the
name of God. Here is an example:
In early 1900s or so someone in Hungary decided that one could experience
oneness with Jesus by replicating his physical experiences. Because Jesus
died
unmarried, he worked this out to mean without having experienced sex, and he
decided to cut off his penises in ritual fashion.
He shared this idea, found followers. So one day he volunteered, and 13 men
sequestered themselves in an old church and had him lie on the pulpit and
with
due ceremony, while 11 held him, the 12th did the cutting work. Because the
organ is mostly blood when aroused, which the process incredibly did by
reflex,
the man bled like a pig and had to recover over 6 months. But he was
considered
very holy and got to be respected by everyone.
Soon others thought they should undergo the same process, and the ritual was
repeated, the ceremony becoming more complex, the participants more
secretive and the process more gruesome, in that they took to using glass
shards, jagged metal, whatever caused the most pain.
The result was a closed society of Lovers of Jesus who sported a mutilated
stump at the pubis. You will think I am bs-ing, but I actually saw a group
photo of the stalwart souls, and yes they did look very sanctified, but
never was a more morose mixed up group of men. Pure but sans the wow.
Their wives? Incredibly, they were accepted as privileged because of the
act, and earned more respect this way than by any personal merit.
For some reason the cult died off as suddenly as it was born. Some rituals
die, some remain for centuries.
