Q. Who was Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan?
A. Born Oct 17, 1817, Delhi,died March 27, 1898, Aligarh, he was a Muslim
educator and jurist. His family had been associated with mughal emperors.
His father was in receipt of an allowance from the mughal administration.
His maternal grand father had held positions of trust in East India Company.
He himself started as clerk in the Company and 3 years later, became
sub-judge. In the 1857 Mutiny, he sided with the British. The mission in his
life was muslim education. He established schools at Muradabad and Ghazipur
and founded the Anglo-Mohammedan Oriental College at Aligarh. He wrote a
modernist commentary on Quran. He organized the All-India Mohammedan
Educational Conference in 1886. It was the principal national centre of
Indian Islam till 1906, when the Indian Muslim League was founded. He
advised muslims against joining active politics. When some Indian muslims
joined Indian National Congress, he came out strongly against the latter. He
was against the establishment of parliamentary democracy in India.

Q. Who was Hakim Ajmal Khan?
A. He was a well known Tibbi medical practitioner. Probably he was the
founder of Tibbi College, Delhi. He probably was in the Congress and had
been an associate of Gandhi.
