Dear Hussain

It is my rule that I never explain, justify or defend my poems. However,
yours is a genuine inquiry, and rules at some stage must be broken:

A somewhat belated explanation:

The very title gives an idea that one of the lovers went away, there
was a parting.

Often in love there are factors which force a parting, but in this case
she wants to fly off somewhere, and does not have the courage, or
inclination to do this. This is indicated by the line, "The one who would
not stay."

Who is calling to her, is it another love, some promise she gave long
ago? We never get to know, because conclusions are
fatal to the mystery of love, "jisne hardam adhura rahena."

The most compelling line, which influences this terrible resolve
on the man's part, is: "She kept looking at the stars."

The most tragic moment comes when he realizes she loves him,
and is looking to him to set her free for her journey onward, maybe
to a more profound love, maybe to freedom.

Often a moment comes in life where unbidden all our heart is rent
open and we stand naked, and lies die in that instant. That moment
comes when:

"One night I sat by her feet in our garden.

And, "I set her free so she would live."

When he goes for a walk he knows when he will return he will:
"find an empty seat."

Then the question, for his every moment is torture, "Would you do
the same?" Answer, "The same."

In a sense he finds his love by losing her to her own superior
enigma. In that sense, by the world's standards, "Are you the fool
then?", he replies, "I am the Fool."

The problem to this story, poignant as it is, is that he replies, not
"I am a fool," but by a definite article, "I am the fool."

When I rarely read my own poems, I am struck by this element
in everyone of these and cannot know why and how I wrote it.

Btw these are taken from my Guft-O-Shuneed I wrote under
my name Dr Homi Kaikobad and Tru Self Inc. published it for
a closed group and limited circulation, to a Western audience,
who like you, almost to the last person, asked the same question.

Leikin hamne kaha, ke ham kuch bhi nahi kahenge.

Regards

Arya.
