Excerpted from "The Nuts and bolts of HR and IR"-Volume 2 by Rajababu
and Nivedita, Nivraaj Publications.

In most companies, the employees get some sort of gift atleast once in their
lifetime. There are certain companies in the manufacturing sector, for
example, who give a small gift to their employees on their birthday, every
year.

It goes without saying that the Senior Management would have fixed a
predetermined budget for buying these gifts. In other words, the individual
price of each gift or rather the maximum price at which each such gift could
be procured, is already fixed. Rightly so.

Where HR Managers should really be innovative is in the choice of the gift.
If you walk into certain shops today, you find a section specially devoted
to gifts. Something that no one has given the employees ever before.

Choose your gifts with care. The employees should be in a position to
remember the gift day in and day out of their life. Something very close to
their heart. Something they shall cherish lifelong.

Examples: A Watch, a gold bracelet both with the company's name emblazoned
on them. There was a leading aluminium company which recently celebrated
some sort of anniversary. So it gave out Titan watches with the company name
and logo emblazoned on each watch.

A word of caution about over-advertising the company name. One MNC went too
many steps ahead, and printed its name on every tie that it gave out to its
employees. Grapevine revealed that no one was ready to wear the tie to
office because of this. In other words, the tie had lost its value and
people were not ready to wear it, since the company name was written on the
tie.

So.....................choose your gifts with care.
