Dear Azim
You have indeed asked the hard question. It is easy to analyse and dissect
but the tough bit remains providing a lasting solution. Anyway since you asked for
my opinion despite me being a novice (which I consider a compliment), I can spell
out the same. Let us begin with various demands and how they currently stand.
==========
>>Palestine: - Israel should allow all Arab refugees to come back and they should be
given back the land that was rightfully theirs. In short disbanding of Israel.
## There won’t be any takers for this demand as it is highly irrational,
unreasonable and impractical. Which nation will bear the risk of taking back
deranged refugees knowing very well their bizarre intentions. There are reports that
even the Arabs residing in Israel dread at this possibility. What would be India’s
response if it were asked to take back the Muslims who fled to Pakistan during
partition? However realisation dawned late and now PLO has moderated their
expectations to West Bank, Gaza strip and Jerusalem. Except for Jerusalem the other
two demands seem reasonable.
>>Israel: - Want to maintain the sovereign status of their nation and want West Bank
and Jerusalem on top of it. Syria and Lebanon should stop arming Hamas militants.
## No doubt about the need for maintaining the sovereignty of Israel. However
Jerusalem cannot be gifted to Israel in spite of the fact their claims sound most
convincing and they deserve it most than other parties, because Jerusalem was not
awarded to Israel as part of the UN mandate. Any move in that direction will be a
recipe for future disaster. West Bank was certainly awarded to Israel but that
decision was made under the assumption that no fighting will erupt and things will
be fine after the mandate. So taking into consideration the present crisis Israel
need to compromise its stand on West Bank and should let it go, because the Arab
refugees need a place to go.
>>Jordan: - Israel should give back West Bank and the land it captured during
Six-Day War.
## Israel has already given back most of the land it captured in the war. As for
West Bank Jordan seems to have resigned to the fact that it will never be under its
rule.
>>Syria: - Israel should give back Golan Heights.
## Israel and Syria are on the verge of reaching an agreement on Golan Heights. As
for Hamas militia, it is now beyond the control of Syria.
>>Egypt: - Israel should give back Gaza strip and the land it captured during
Six-Day War.
## Israel has already given back most of the land it captured in the war. Similar to
the Jordanian position Egypt also seems to have resigned to the fact that Gaza will
never be under its rule.
>>Lebanon, Iraq and Saudi Arabia have no direct territorial disputes with Israel.
==========
Now this is how I would like it to be resolved.
## Israel will remain a sovereign Jewish state and there should not be any demand
from any quarters regarding taking back of Arab refugees. However they should stop
construction of Jewish settlements in West Bank. Constructions of any settlement if
any should be inside Israeli territorial land or else politely discourage more
Jewish immigration. Jewish Aliya was relevant during the Anti-Semitic era but not
any more. Across the globe there has been a sea change in people’s attitude towards
Jews.
## Palestinians should have a homeland of their own comprising of West Bank and Gaza
strip. The status of the Jewish settlers will be at the discretion of the Arabs or
in other words the task of the resettling the Jewish settlers in West Bank is the
responsibility of Israel, as this is a problem of their own creation, which could
have been avoided. For a better and complete solution it is also not a bad idea to
merge Gaza with Israel in lieu of equivalent area of land in Israel’s eastern
borders adjoining West Bank. This will turn to be beneficial to both sides when it
comes to guarding its borders. The relocation costs can be horrendous but is
certainly worth the money. UN should bear any such costs and if needed should be
recovered from Britain and the other rogue Arab states of Jordan, Egypt, Syria,
Lebanon, Iraq and Saudi, who were the architects of this sordid drama.
## Finally Jerusalem. The Jewish quarters along with Hebrew University, Museum,
historical cemeteries and other Jewish landmarks should go to Israel. The Arab
eastern sector minus the Temple Mount should go to Palestine. The Temple Mount and
its adjacent areas that encompass the Western Wall, Mosque and the ramparts should
be declared as an international monument (similar to Vatican) under UN control.
However the control of Jerusalem should be in the hands of a special council
comprising of eminent Jews, Muslims and Christians from that area, else US the
present patron of UN will not stop at turning it into another money making
Disneyland.
==========
Well so much for the solution, but for this to take place there should be
fundamental shift in attitudes and outlook. Here are a few.
## Palestine should come to terms with the fact that Israel as a nation is there to
stay and should strive to coexist with the Jews.
## Palestinians should realise that a strong and economically vibrant Israel is to
their advantage, after all it is Israel who will ultimately be their job masters and
not the other Arab nations.
## Arafat and if possible PLO should be out of the picture. How could Arafat born in
Cairo claim to be a native Palestinian? Elections should be held so that Arabs can
elect their rightful representatives.
## Suicide bombing of Jewish civilians should stop at any cost. Any violation of
this will only strengthen Israel’s resolve to hit back with force.
## Israel should realise that the existence of Palestine is to their advantage as it
provides them a source of cheap and cost effective labour.
## Israel should also reconsider its settlement programme.
I have no illusions when it comes to implementation of these steps. But end of the
day both Jews and Palestinians should realise that they were merely pawns in a
bizarre scheme started and played to perfection by British and the other middle
eastern Arab states, but which is now beyond their control.
