Well they are not so lucky this year there was very less rains then also almost 75%-80% of Mumbai Road have PotHoles and With just rains falling from last two days almost half the City area are flooded. City running out of sugar

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Mumbai Sugar Merchants’ Association (MSMA) has stopped supply of sugar to the city after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) increased octroi duty on sugar from one percent to two.

The supply was stopped on August 1, the day the octroi hike came into effect.

This move is likely to create a crisis for consumers, especially in view of the approaching festival season when the demand for sweets is high. Mumbai receives 20,000 quintals of sugar every
day.

Justifying stoppage of supply, MSMA president Mohan Gurnani said: “It is insensitive on the
BMC’s part to have increased octroi duty.”

According to him, while BMC would gain 30 paise by way of octroi per kilo of sugar, the
burden would have to be borne by the consumer.

The increase means that for each bag (containing one quintal of sugar), octroi duty will be Rs 30 instead of the existing Rs 15.

“The traders anyway get a small margin of around 5 paise per kg sold, though the turnover is humongous,” he said, adding that supply had been stopped “purely for the benefit of consumers.”

Mukesh Kuvadia, a trader and joint secretary of MSMA said: “We get our supplies from places like Kolhapur, Nashik, Karad, Pune, Sangli and Satara.

“But now supplies have been stopped so that a shortage is created with the retailer. The retailer will therefore hike the price, leading to an all-out protest by consumers.” He said this was the traders’ method of protest against the BMC.

Some shops in the city have already run out of sugar. Vijay Shinde, proprietor of Ram Krishna Provision Stores, Lower Parel, said: “I called up my agent in Vashi on Saturday when I realised I was running out of stock. He told me no sugar was available. Now all customers who come asking for sugar return empty-handed.”

Harilal Devji Sanghoi, who owns a provision store at N M Joshi Marg, has a similar problem.

T S Chawla, proprietor of Rajesh Stores in Lower Parel said: “We have some stock of sugar
left, but after it gets over, I don’t know what I’m going to do. What we earlier sold for Rs 16 is now sold for Rs 18.”

...but BMC firm on octroi hike

The MSMA’s move to stop sugar supply to Mumbai hasn’t affected the BMC. The corporation insists that the increase in octroi duty on sugar is here to stay.

“We have increased octroi duty for all commodities. I don’t know why the sugar lobby is making such a hue and cry,” Municipal Commissioner K Srivastava said. The consumer will face a burden of only 10 paise and not 30 paise as alleged by the sugar merchants, he added.

The BMC is expected to generate extra revenue to the tune of Rs 200 crore due to the hike in octroi duty on all commodities.

“We need this revenue to maintain roads, make waste management more efficient and look after other civic amenities,” Srivastava said.

Excise Minister Anil Deshmukh was unavailable for comment.
