and Nivedita, Nivraaj Publications.
Much as the IR Manager would like to assume that he has the entire grip of
the factory personnel, there are some situations which throw him off guard.
No amount of planning or strategising or contingency measures on his part
will redeem the situation, since some of these problems have nothing to do
with rationality. I mean, one example is that of ego clashes between two
titans in a factory.
Any one who has worked in a factory set-up would realise that in certain
set-ups, the head of the Factory, who is normally of a Production backgound,
or in some cases Marketing, has certain reservations about HO exectuves.
>From our studies at Nivraaj Consultants, we have attributed this to typical
factory atmospheres, where there is not much glamour, as compared to typical
HO atmospheres, where all senior persons wear ties and the atmosphere is so
much better. Probably the resentment has its roots in these deep points.
In any case, the scene shifts to a company in Belapur area in Thane. The HO
is in Worli, a posh, air-conditioned floor near the Passport Office, and the
factory is in Belapur. The VP-Production sits on the 2nd floor in Belapur in
cabin, where the A/C does not work most of the time. He decides to renovate
his cabin, and purposely relocates to the MD's cabin on the first floor.
A bit of history about the MD's cabin on the first floor. The MD visits the
factory for 2 hours in a week. His air-conditioner never ever has conked off
in the last ten years.
Now the VP-Production deicides to extract his pound of flesh. He decides to
relocate to the MD's cabin. Whenever the MD would come to the factory, he
would wait until the MD knocks and then he would temporarily shift for 2
hours.
The MD is angry, and flustered after 3-4 weeks. He fires the IR Manager for
not doing his bit. Six months later, the VP-Production hands in his
resignation.
The IR Manager till date does not know what went wrong, since he didnt have
a whiff of the problem in the first place. Yes, some other shrewder IR
Manager would have probably heard this through the grapevine, and tried to
reconcile, but then ....................
ALL OF US ARE NOT SO SHREWD. MAYBE THIS IS A LESSON FOR ALL IR MANAGERS TO
KEEP THEIR EYES AND EARS OPEN.
