[nukkad] The Quit India Movement

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It is well to remember that the entire universe, with
one trifling exception, is composed of others." -- John Andrew Holmes
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,
In those days my father and uncle ( father's elder brother ) who were then
teenagers had quit English medium school they were in, in Mumbai and both
reported to Mani Bhavan where Gandhiji had camped, to offer their services.
My uncle was initiated by the Satyagrahis but my father was turned away on
the instructions of Gandhiji.
Gandhi wanted only one son in each family to join this last mass movement
and he maintained that other youths are required for the service of the
nation when India became free. Clearly, Bapu had the end of British rule in
sight.
Like M.V. Kamath, many had no confidence in freedom struggle until it was
proclaimed by Mountbaton !!
But as my uncle would narrate, Gandhi Bapu very much knew that this time
Aug. 1942) was the last major sacrifice that he demanded from the nation.
My father turned obedient to Gandhiji and to my uncle since he was his elder
brother, whereas many youths were badly disappointed and carried on
Satyagraha and picketing of European goods on their own. Some even joined
bands of J.P., Usha Mehta and Aruna Asaf Ali and indulged into sporadic
violence.
Some time at leisure I shall narrate how my uncle's life was saved by
Congress nationalist Muslim student Satyagrahi, Babu Gani while in exchange
Gani sacrificed his own.
Rightly, the Government of Maharashtra has named a road in south Mumbai as
Babu Gani Street and we must credit shiv Sena for not demanding it to be
renamed.
Sacrifice of many small and unknown men wont go waste, India is on the march
and moves into posterity as a triumphant nation, whatever be the odds.
Jai Hind,
Rohit Zaveri.
