Thanks Rohit for the detailed answer.

I wonder if one can add more info on it.

I think George Orwell (1984, Animal Farm) was part of British Army in
India and during his posting in India, he served in Burma also.

Actually, I somehow felt that Burma must have been part of India because
my father was in Indian Army (under British) at that time, and he was
also posted at Burma and had faught there. His index finger got broken
that lead to his relinquishing the services.

The point is:
Was Burma always culturally and socially different from India?

Did British club it with India for administrative convenience and
separated it for the same reason?

Why/when was it clubbed with India?
Why was it separated from India?
---------------

And above all, why aren't their cries for merger of Burma and India,
when some people are proposing POKashmir and Pakistan merger with India?

------------------
Ona a similar note, Was Srilanka ever part of India?

I mean, I wonder why british would not have colonised such a small
region. And if colonised, that must have been administered from India
herself.
