If the incident involved your own family member, it is really surprising that you can't remember the name. Or, have the authorities mixed up?? ----------------------------------------------- As I recollect my uncle used to refer to him as Ganibhai. I came to know of this incidence from him in 1975, and then I did not pay so much attention to it, as most of the youngsters in Bomaby care for their fun at that age. There is some chance that his name is spelled as Babu Genu, because I am not cent percent sure of it. I referred to him as Muslim only judging from the name I know, i.e. Ganibhai. The two did not have any contact with each other prior to meeting at an exclusively European departmental shop near Churni Road, which was targetted by the Satyagrahis for boycotting the goods. The British owner of the shop held curfew pass which used to be issued to enable Europeans to travel during curfew hours and thus managed to reach the shop. There was heavy sloganeering from boys and girls and the access to the shop was blocked by the crowd. The Britisher had brought with him a lorry full of clothes and he made two unsuccessful attempts to break the cordon and enter the shop. Frustrated and irate, he reversed the truck away to a distance and came roaring in straight into the crowd. The boys and girls were chanting nationalist hymns and were engaged in forming a cordon by linking each other's hands in elbow clasp. Seeing the lorry rushing at them, the voice of the slogans reached the peak. In the front were my uncle and two other boys, one of them being Babu. Only a fraction of a second before the vehicle hit the front row, Babu gave a mighty elbow push to my uncle who was thrown back. Babu was crushed under the wheels and soon died. There was some inquiry subsequently carried out by the police and thus my uncle went underground. From 1942 till independence he kept changing places in Punjab, between Lahore, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jullunder. Finally he surfaced in Delhi on 15 th August 1947 !!!! Since then he settled down in Delhi and lived there till his death in early 1990.
