Re: [nukkad] Tom Clancy novels

What we need is either less corruption, or more chance to
participate in it.

Yes, I have. It's an evergreen. Both the book and the film. The latter
perhaps because of Gregory Peck. He's the most intelligent and most handsome
actor ever. My husband thinks so too (sic!).

> Uncle Tom's Cabin( it will shake you to your roots, believe me.)<

I have. Was very impressed when reading and watching for the first time [at
about 11 or 12]. Later tried again but it'd lost its power [perhaps my roots
had become too old and thick by that time ; ) ].

> Roots.(Alex Haley)<

I have. The film quite OK, but preferred the book.

> The Thorn-Birds<

I have. The story - interesting, very emotional, but somewhat spoilt by the
writer's verbose style. The film, for obvious reasons, avoided this trap.

> The Day of the Jackal( the book is better)<

I have. Agree.

> The Bourne Identity( Ludlum)
> The Holcroft Covenant(ditto)<

Don't know these two. Generally, Ludlum is not among my favourites.

> Edgar Allan Poe's mystery tales, esp. Murders at the Rue-Morgue.<

I have. Very misterious and very British. And very poetic. By the way, have
you read his poems?

> Why does one return again and again to some books, not others:

 Superficial Reasons: ( ... )

 Actual Reasons:
1.It occupies a special place in your heart( for whatever reasons)
 2.Emotional roller-coaster ride
3.Touches an aspect of your own life.<

On second thought I would add:
4. Inspires your imagination.
5. You just like the character(s)
6. You want to taste the writer's language and style again.
7. You read it long ago, were impressed, and want to see whether your
reaction will be the same or different.
8. You just miss it [maybe it also misses you!].

Anna.
