---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Disease can be cured; fate is incurable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Asha... Lots of teachers in the list... anna for one as well... Am sure that she can give you some tips on students as well... but as regards ur mail.. u seem to be doing a great job.. nevertheless.. I remember when I was a student... the most important thing that we asked for from a teacher was that the teacher should involve the students.. atleast take some suggestions regarding any decisions that affect the students... as students, we hated teachers who would just walk into class.... Give orders and walk out... also another very important quality that we considered in a teacher was the ability to discuss... the students should have the freedom to question what the teacher says... most of our teachers never gave us that option.. what was written in some book / said by the teacher was taken as the authority.. most times without any justification or any clarification... this made us dislike the subject as we never got to really understand it... Of course.. these are just reflections of my feelings as to when I was a student... in a literal sense ... I am not one anymore.. though in some way or the other... I'm sure we are all forever students.... Some of them are brilliant while some need lots of help. Many factors affect their performance. I never realized the amount of tensions they have. When they share their problems or worries with me, I forget mine. Err...I always invite worries and troubles! When riots broke in parts of Gujurat and Kashmir, students from those regions were not allowed to visit their homes for the vacation. College was their house and we were their family members. They were like zombies. Bad phase... Does anyone realize that? Students who belong to economically poor families suffer from some sort of inferiority complex. They see their classmates with a mobile, bike and good clothes. 'How am I going to repay the education loan? Will I get a job after my course? ... ' Gang, tell me what should I answer? Rich or poor, I treat everyone as equal. Broken families, or over ambitious parents have bad effect on the students. Some of them build a shell around themselves. Some become lazy while others get addicted to alcohol or drugs or cigarettes. Frustration builds up. We lecture, give assignments and walk out of the class. When they perform badly, I feel like screaming at them. But, hold on! They need someone to listen to them rather than they listening to someone. Kids are delicate. When my temper hits the ceiling, I comment, 'Think! God has given you a component called Brain. Use it, please!' Some stare at me. Some have eyes filled with tears. Some grin. Some frown. Eeeks! I feel miserable for releasing my anger on them. After few minutes, one by one they walk into my room with the silliest of doubts! I'm pampering them too! When they see me sailing paper boats or planning to have a kite flying competition, they nod their heads in disbelief. To curb politics in class, I had to learn to understand a few Indian languages. Speak to them in their native languages, and they are extremely happy. The state of happiness reduces many unwanted problems. Phew! I'm a student too. I have two varieties of fevers - 'student exam fever' and 'teacher exam fever'! Any remedies? Gang, I'm raw and inexperienced. I need help. By the way, does anyone remember me? I'm Asha [*winks*]. 8/8/02 2:19 AM __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
